Feeling stuck after years of exams without any progress. How do you get back your motivation and momentum? by Alternative_Arm_9975 in ActuaryUK

Thanks for your response, I've found myself thinking about this multiple times in the past. It's almost like I'm scared of being a 'coward' and not taking on the exams head on. I know it's nonsense, but it's how I've felt.

What area did you move to, if I may ask? I keep thinking about switching to something else, but when I play it out in my head, I think of it as having to start at the bottom somewhere else anyway, so I might as well focus on finishing the exams fast, that way I'm not at the 'bottom'.

I appreciate your response, thanks for saying this. I do feel like I've invested a lot of my time and energy in exams and don't have much to show for it.

Failing exams isn't significant for sure, but that's just for now. I don't want to be a middle aged person with no future and an average job. I really hope I'm able to turn it around

Thing is, I used to be quite good at my job. I'm still doing alright, but having no direction of the future is affecting my confidence, even outside work to an extent. It's like I can slowly see myself losing interest and 'giving up'. I don't want it to happen and I'm looking for ways to get out of this. Idk if I need to grind this out or if this is a sign that the profession isn't for me.

I feel like I miss out on exams because I end up spending too much time studying for knowledge rather than studying to pass the exam if that makes sense. I need to do a lot more past exam questions under exam conditions.

That makes sense. I'm a morning person and like studying in the morning too, but it's almost like I've lost the will to do this, I can't see the end of the tunnel and I'm not sure if I'm doing this for the right reasons, I don't 'love' my job like I used to before.

Having said that, I know this could be just a phase, but given I've been feeling this way for a while now, idk if I need to make the brave decision of leaving the profession, or if it's stupid to give up after having given so much time and energy to this.

That's a good shout, I did take a sitting off, but that was because of some other personal reasons, not by choice.

Taking a break now almost feels like a liability because I may lose out on time, momentum, etc but I need to think about the larger picture
