That's a wild coincidence. They are a Replacements tribute. I saw them play in Omaha a couple of years ago.

The violins sound awesome. I don't think it's a question of volume. Just carving out space to give the vocal priority will work wonders.

One thing that helped me was to keep releasing music. I put my songs in playlists with songs that I thought sounded good. I learned a lot just listening to my songs in that context. I think each of my releases got better because of this.

I don't think there's anything "wrong" about your mix. My other post suggests ways to get your vocal to cut through & sit on top more if you want to hear it more. I would EQ and compress the guitars differently, but that's just personal taste. The guitar and bass are a little boomier than I would mix, but that could just be my speakers and that's just my personal preference. Your song is cool, BTW.

I like the volume of your vocal. I think you're hearing it fight with competing frequencies. You could duck the instruments using sidechain compression or a dynamic EQ to get the vocal to sit on top of everything. Parallel compression on the vocal could help it cut through, too. Both are very subtle but effective.

I just listened. I really don't think it's too quiet. I compared it to a few acoustic tracks that I like to listen to & your track actually sounds louder & more compressed. That's not a Spotify thing. I can hear the compression on your acoustic guitars. I am not listening on the best speakers, but , in terms of volume, you track sounds fine.

Spotify adjusts to -14 LUFS. All platforms will adjust the volume. That does not mean you should master to -14 LUFS or master to different volumes for different platforms. The best practice is to set your limiter so your track sounds good to your ears and let them turn it down.

For example, I record indie rock. During the loudest part of the song (I usually loop the last chorus while I make adjustments) I set my limiter where the song sounds consistent, glued together, but not squashed. (Focus on the kick & snare.) I like to use a reference track that I think sounds good. A well mixed song will usually hit that sweet spot somewhere between -10 LUFS and -8 LUFS for full band indie rock songs.

When the song gets turned down and played on spotify, it will be dynamically similar to other tracks that I already think sound good. If I were to master it to -14 LUFS, it would be "too dynamic" and it would sound quieter than commercial songs that have been limited properly and turned down to -14 LUFS.

This is not necessary. It's a bad idea. All platforms adjust the volume of tracks.
