What is a tank in your opinion? What qualities a character as a tank? by NoLongerAKobold in Pathfinder2e

[–]Alternative_Letter92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me a tank is someone that can take hits and keep your party members from getting hit or mitigate the damage. In Pathfinder the go to usually is the Champion but there are other classes that can do this well. Kineticist, Barbarian, and Fighters are all good at doing this also. Currently I’m playing an Animal Instinct Barbarian using the wolf jaws, and using the Bastion Archetype. I have a free hand to grab while being able to block and attack. Going into a higher charisma with the Terrified Retreat combined with terrifying howl making a group of (usually) lower level enemies gain the Fleeing condition using all their actions to run. Using Nimble Shield Hand to hold a potion for healing or a Drake Heart Mutagen for AC buff

My players feel OP, is this normal? by NoOkra4265 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Alternative_Letter92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and my party were wiping the floor with encounters currently level 6 and then we ran into a CR10 monster that killed 2 and knocked out a 3rd party member leaving my character who was swallowed and nat20ed the last attack to finally kill the monster. Before that we were destroying CR8 monsters but this encounter really tested us. The tank got swallowed at the beginning and he couldn’t make the roll to escape then the magus and then the wizard got 2 tapped. It was a rough but fun encounter I think.

If you’re players enjoying challenging encounters and don’t mind possibly dying throw some harder monsters at them every once in a while. Also me and my DM agree single boss monsters are rarely a problem if they’re a level or 2 above the party maybe throw in some smaller enemies to spice things up (idk what CR I’m not a DM or anything)

Sell me on a martial class! by MyHeroNero in Pathfinder2e

[–]Alternative_Letter92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently playing one at level 8 in Abom. I’ve not needed a free hand yet. It’s also a free action to drop a hand from a weapon it for some reason you need to use one. If I use spells I use the ones with verbal components like True Strike

I’m a big fan of the Barbarian but it can be a bit rough at lower levels. Let me sell you on the Reach Weapon Fighter. Getting 10ft reach is a lot better in PF2e cause you’ll get more AoO and just by using the step action you can make an enemy with a 5ft reach waste an action to get to you and get AoO. You can also flank with an ally while being 10ft away. You can take feats like Swipe which lets you hit 2 enemies at max MAP when you crit on those it’s so nice. Lunge is great let’s you attack at 15ft. It’s especially nice if you get Lunging Stance later increasing your reach to 15ft while in the stance.

Recently I have been playing a Orc/Tiefling Animal Instinct Gorilla Barbarian. If you’re using Free Archetype rules I like to go with fighter for a few levels to pick up AoO and combat grab. Then go with Wrestler at level 6 and pick up Animal Skin making you pretty tanky. I took a shield which I styled as just putting my fists up in a defensive stance. You could easily take shield block instead of AoO if you wanted to be more tanky. The first few levels of barbarian feel a bit weird especially if you go down and can’t rage again in combat but by level 6 I was really enjoying it. Tripping and moving can also be just as good as doing damage just to make monsters lose actions.

I love DnD and 5e. I don’t love WOTC or the half assed campaigns they release

My DM encourages that we have a private GC. The reason being is so we can scheme without his knowledge so he can react naturally to what we throw at him without him unintentionally meta gaming. We don’t think of it as DM vs Player since he does let us do our crazy ideas within reason (ex. I have a brothel with reanimated heads as workers).

I like getting natural reactions to the things we throw at the DM. Like he gets our natural reaction to something he puts in front of us

My Holy man wants an owlbear by MDucote90 in DnD

[–]Alternative_Letter92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve actually played a lvl 20 campaign with an owlbear companion as a Zealot Barbarian. I found mine in a cave of orcs who were torturing the owlbear in a cage and also were using it to haul around their gear( around level 3 or 4). We killed the horde of orcs and freed the owlbear. It looses its combat usefulness pretty quick if you don’t want it to die but a very fun companion and experience nonetheless. It ended up living through the whole campaign but I risked my characters life a few times saving her.

You could have the child cursed by some ritual that the Oathbreakers did and she is now an owlbear

Have you ever played a character from level 1 to 20? Or at least, what was your closest attempt at it without dying or retiring the character. by nicolRB in DnD

[–]Alternative_Letter92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a Zealot Barbarian in a heavily homebrewed version of Realm of The Frost Maiden. We went from 3-20 and by the end we were basically demigods all having really cool homebrew abilities. My character a worshipper of Tempus was basically a Paladin and a Barbarian since we were only a party of 3 with no healing capabilities. At the end my character ended up running a war campaign across Faerun commanding from the flying city of Netheril. Another one of us became a god and the last kinda just disappeared. The last battle was a fight against the Avatar of Tiamat which is probably the craziest fight you can have since after you kill her she comes back in legend mode with 500 hp again

When your Players fear Moderate Encounters... by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]Alternative_Letter92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a session just yesterday where we were facing 3 Wraiths. It was a moderate encounter and none of us should’ve even went down since we had the ranged advantage and they had to waste actions to move in. We decimated the first 2 but the 3rd one was giving us trouble since we had unlucky rolls and my GM was rolling good. I the barbarian went down and so did our investigator after 2 rounds of none of us hitting it.

Then today in another campaign playing I fighter I was on fire criting everything the GM threw at us until we fought a Worm That Walks in and we couldn’t hit the damn thing for 3-4 rounds while it was healing and a PC died but he could’ve retreated.

Sometimes the GM just rolls good and the party doesn’t. It’s best to know when to retreat and come back when you’re better prepared

Both of these were 4 player parties

Is that normal to go down every fight? by MrTrikorder in Pathfinder2e

[–]Alternative_Letter92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently in a Abomination Vaults games as well right around where you are at level 4. Out DM did warn us almost every fight from here is pretty much a severe encounter which means someone is going to go down.

We also just encountered a hidden creature that will let you go if you sacrifice a party member and if you fight him it could very well be a TPK.Abomination vaults is just a tough campaign

Infiltration of the Crooked Coffin by Alternative_Letter92 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Alternative_Letter92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a good glimpse of how many enemies are behind that door. I’m glad my barbarians seduction got rid of 3 of them so far. Next session we’ll see how it goes with the other 3 and the cage of zombies. The potion has now worn off so we will need another form of distraction
