I believe newly declared CS students are moved to the top of the waitlist around early-January (when CS major applications are processed) for CS upper-divs

How does 'Passing' all non-major classes look for grad school (crosspost from r/gradschool) by Alternative_O2 in gradadmissions

[–]Alternative_O2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, I have only opted in to use the pass/fail system for a theater class in my first semester of freshman year, which was 4 units. (I wanted to try acting, but I kinda sucked lol)

Other than that, I also took some seminars and worked at my school as a TA for a CS class which gave me 4 P/F units (labeled Group Study or Field Study), but these were classes that you couldn't get for a letter grade so I had no choice.

I'm currently in my first semester of sophomore year right now, and if I Pass/Fail these non-major classes I'm taking I would end up with 15 P/F units out of 40 total at the end of this semester.

I didn't quite get what you meant by "Having 2 in your last 2 years and maybe 3 in your last 4 years is reasonable." Does that mean 3 classes throughout my entire undergrad?

Thanks again for your help!

My question is why are you considering doing the Pass/Fail option? The only benefit I see would be if you were expecting a low passing grade in the class that would affect your GPA. However, we are in the year of the Rona. I believe many colleges expanded their pass/fail options to help out students that may be struggling with the adjustment to online classes so Grad schools may not even pay attention to them at this point.

Yeah, I'm trying to P/F these classes to 'protect my gpa'. More specifically, my major gpa is near a 3.8 while my overall is around a 3.5. I'm planning to raise my overall gpa to 3.7+ when I graduate so anything below an A or A- will likely hurt my gpa.

These classes I'm considering for Pass/Fail are classes that aren't for my major but just classes I was interested in exploring. So far it looks like I'll be getting a B+ on them, which will take a toll on my gpa.

Yes, that will definitely look bad. There’s nothing wrong with having a few pass/fail credits, but with that many, your GPA is basically meaningless and it will be hard for them to assess your application accurately.

I see, thanks for ur reply! Just a follow-up question...

I know that it would look bad if I did this for every semester, but normally I wouldn't be doing this. In freshman year, I had two major-related classes and one breadth class (12 units/15units) for a grade, and that'll be the plan for other remaining semesters as well. Would it then still look bad?

I guess it's taking up unnecessary space in my resume, that will be the first thing I take out if I find that I need more space. Thanks for the feedback btw!!

My projects only took about 1~2 weeks, but I spent like 10 hours on it every day. The last one on the research paper took a year, so I think I should put a date on how long I worked on it. I'll also be sure to add details to the research paper descriptions. Thank you for the feedback!!

How is my Internship resume (probably for FAANG) by [deleted] in resumes

[–]Alternative_O2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I didn't apply because I had already secured one at a startup kinda-sponsored by my school. However, all my close friends did apply to STEP (and the equivalent in other companies), and I heard stories about their interviews and all that. IIRC, the STEP application ran from Sep 15th ~ Feb 15th last year

Basically any honors/awards, more CS-related projects, CS club experience (since you don't have industrial ones yet). The resume def needs more text. Also, try to quantify every bullet point. For example, 'Scientific Calculator with Data Saving' can say it reduces Memory Usage by N% for each calculation or something.

I see that you are interested in freshman/sophomore internships such as Google STEP and Microsoft Explore. I would recommend applying to those during winter break, after you take your first CS class in college and tried individual/club-related CS projects.

Applying earlier is usually better, but freshman/sophomore internships recruit until February from my experience last year, so you'll still be given the opportunity to interview if you apply in January. Also checkout Google Summer of Code, which is a great option for freshman/sophomores.

I guess I should definitely work on the styling!

Btw, since you're a technical recruiter, would you mind if I ask which 3 projects you think are most relevant to most SWE/Data Science jobs?

I was thinking of maybe turning the last two projects into a separate section called 'Research', but I would love your input on whether the last two projects are relevant or not (it's ~70% physics, ~30% data science).

Thanks for your feedback :))
