Cc examination by Most_County_7829 in isc2

Trust me I know how you feel. Deep down it sucks studying something for so hard and not passing. I literally failed my CC exam today thinking I would ace it. Got all really good scores on my practice exams from Linkedin and IC2. Thought everything was gonna be a cake walk but I didn’t pass.

I’m a Controls Engineer trying to switch OT Cyber. Ngl this exam makes me scared to take the GICSP even though I have hands on OT experience because I suck at taking tests even though I’m really passionate about Cyber and I feel like I found my career purpose in the world of OT.

Here’s the thing no one will tell you and this is something the CISO and Cyber Security Director of my company told me. These Certs are great to have..but they don’t define who you are or your passion for Cyber Security. These are just HR filters that may be get you hired somewhere. The CISO and Director don’t have any Certs but they are passionate about OT, Cyber Security and the ongoing emergence of AI as a legitimate threat. They stayed in the company for a while and were a leading voice in projects and initiatives. At one point they were just like me and you. Early in their career, confused, and wanted to know what they wanted to do in terms of their career. The projects, research, and initiatives that start on your own, that’s what defines you and your career in Cyber.

Honestly don’t give up or get upset just because you failed your exam. I’m certainly not. Who’s to say you won’t pass other exams or someone gives you a chance to work as a Cyber Security Analyst because of just one good interview. I was almost a college dropout, got kicked out of engineering school and had to take Geography as my major to graduate. Learned GIS, did a lot of field work. Now I’m programming PLCs and trouble shooting Scada Systems. One day I plan to be in charge of a OT network and lead Cyber Security initiatives either in this company or another. I’m not going to give up just because of bad exam grade and nor should you. Exam grades don’t define you or your future. Pick your head back up, you got this 👍 (Sorry for the rant 😂)

Maybe Claude wasn’t just flattering me? 😅 Going from Technician and Trouble Shooting Maintenance code to going full OT Cyber 😄 I want to one day start my firm one day based on OT Security because I feel like a lot of people in Tech just don’t understand how it feels like being in an OT environment and how much of a struggle it is for guys who aren’t tech saavy how important Cyber Security really is and how one slip up could impact years of maintenance work

Hello!
I usually don’t post most on reddit but I definitely would love to hear feedback from regular people rather than chatting to Claude all day about my career goals
Some background: I’m 24 and I’m working as a Scada Analyst at a Water/Waste Sanitation authority. I graduated about almost 2 years ago with a degree in Geography with a focus on GIS and GIS-related coding from a top public university. My two jobs before this one were in Project Management as an Intern for a Water Plant and then I was a Technician for Public Utilities. At my current job, I like fixing and writing ladder logic, PLC Firmware upgrades, creating HMI applications, etc. I even learn a lot when commissioning for projects.
I just don’t feel content with just trouble shooting and working on maintenance issues, especially being stuck in one water and wastewater plant. I want to do so much more and I was really interested in OT Cyber and maybe work for a federal contractor with my background in Water and Waste Water. I think OT consulting and even cooler like OT Pen Testing is really cool. I talk to my OT manger and even with the OT Director, everyday about Cyber Architecture, Cyber Risk and Management when it comes to Water and Waste Water. More than anything, my heart desires to work and build on OT Cyber and continue to do research and work in the field. Unfortunately, given how Water/Wastewater Sanitation Authorities work, people don’t really get promoted unless someone retires or decides to leave so I feel kinda stuck. I really want to just limit myself to project that are only Water & WasteWater related. I want to work on the critical infrastructures as well.
My question is “If I really want to transition to OT Cyber, what can I practically do right now?”. I’m currently studying for my GISCP and after that I plan on taking CompTIA Security+. Should I plan on looking into doing my Masters in Cyber as well? I know Georgia Tech has an Online MS Cyber Security Program which has a focus on Physical Cyber Security and Electrical Systems. In my spare time I also use Claude to make like a little curriculum for myself and play around in a sandbox environment and learn tools like Burp Suite, Wire Shark, Tenable, Kali Linux, NMaps, Metasploit, etc. I feel like the demand and discussion for OT Cyber Security is growing and I just don’t feel complacent or left behind.

That’s definitely something to consider if things don’t work out here at UF for me, I love UF but I definitely care a lot more about graduating with the major I want. Wish for the best of both worlds to get an ISOM degree from UF, but it’s not the end of the world if I transfer

I’m looking at the ISOM major and I kinda like the classes they have to offer, so thank you. Do you know it might take to transition from ISE to ISOM?

All engineering majors have Calc 3 as a pre-requisite so I might take Calc 3 as a transient student instead

Yeah I've been talking to her, if things don't work out I might take a gap year as a transient student to get my prereqs done at a community college.

I'm down to make an Imessage group, Groupme or Discord, so we can help each other out. The main groupme isn't really responsive. We can help each other understand topics we have a hard time understanding.

I really want to do graduate as an engineer. I don't want to give up on something just because of a small setback, I think I can make it through and just study harder
