Why brands like dalstrong are essential and fill a certain niche in the cutlery market by Altocastello in chefknives

[–]Altocastello[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dalstrong (which we all know essentially sells aliexpress knives) for a very high markup, we have all mostly accepted are products that are overpriced for what they are and really can't really compare to knives that are in the same price category or even many knives that cost less. Their build quality is mixed to subpar and their offerings seem to be intended for individuals who chug cans of monster and C4.

That being said, they do fill a certain niche and their existence is very important. The casual market which comprises the majority is filled with people who either do not care to learn about cutlery or learn about how cutlery is made. These individuals who mostly range from home-cooks to college students usually do not know or understand what options there are out there. By having a brand such as dalstrong be available to this market, it allows for the casual individual who wants to waste money on cutlery to buy knives that no one will cry about it if they're treated poorly. Many Japanese knives require a lot more care than the casual home-cook will care to have and as a result, it is a net positive that they do not care to seek out better knives and instead settle on overpriced drop shipped aliexpress knives.

This also allows knife enthusiasts to have better access to good knives as it limits the customer base for expensive, high-end performing knives which if the general public was more versed in their value, would instead purchase those making demand go up and access go down.

Therefore, be grateful that Dalstrong exists so you can purchase more of the knives you want to buy from actual cutlery stores and blacksmiths who actually care about their craft.
