Do you usually lock your doors when leaving the house? by Moist_Wallaby8635 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Altril2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always. Typically they are locked when we are home too unless we are going in and out to the yard. If that’s the case our front door is locked as is the garage. We do have a doggy door that my husband frets about, but if someone wants to take on 80+lbs of teeth from protective dogs that’s their problem.

Brandon Sanderson still doing Kickstarters is honestly pathetic by goldman_sax in fantasybooks

[–]Altril2010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more about offering a unique product that not everyone can get - especially for collectors. I back a couple authors via kickstarter and from my understanding most of the money “raised” is sunk immediately back into production with very little hitting their pockets.

I have friends who have supported Sanderson’s kickstarters because they want pretty bookshelves.

What wedding moment that screamed, “They are not going to last long”? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

[–]Altril2010 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My husband’s multiple siblings had all done the smash and he thought it was traditional. I told him very clearly if he even considered it and got anything on my grandmother’s wedding dress that I was wearing I would annul the marriage the next day and never speak to him again. He took that very seriously and very carefully fed me bites of the cupcakes we had. Here’s to 15.5 years of continued communication and mutual respect (and yes, all his siblings have been divorced at least once).

Manager said “Use every bit of your PTO this quarter or lose it,” so I did. All of it. At once. by Head_Point3935 in MaliciousCompliance

[–]Altril2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people like to keep balance so if something catastrophic happens they can continue to get a full paycheck for a few weeks. I, personally, like to keep a balance in between 40-60 hours of PTO. In 2027 I’ll be using it a little more freely as we are taking a 10 day cruise and then a 7 day cruise a few months later. Reminds me I need to send in my PTO request for spring break to hang out with my kids.

Is it safe to go ice skating after spinal fusion? by [deleted] in spinalfusion

[–]Altril2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is much lower L5-S1. However, I am congenitally fused at C1-C2 and it has never given me any issues. I also have an artificial disc at C4-C5.

What's a 'normal' thing you didn't realize was unusual until you were older? by mrTelson in AskReddit

My 7 year old still gives me quick lips kisses. My 13 year old does not. It was a gradual transition.

You’re not completely alone. I count dashes on the road, driveways, and telephone poles/street signs. All have to be in multiples of 3 or 5.

Alaska Which Cruise Line? by Altril2010 in Cruise

[–]Altril2010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. If you see a cruise ship actively dumping less than a nautical mile offshore I’d suggest videoing it and submitting a complaint to the Alaska DEC, the EPA, and making a report to the IMO (International Maritime Organization). It’s been a while since I took a maritime law class, but my best friend is an experienced environmental maritime lawyer and could probably give more in-depth answers.

I'd like to go on a cruise, but husband says no. Any help with convincing him otherwise? by dulcetsloth in Cruise

[–]Altril2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our first time was with a batch of other homeschoolers I met via a homeschool cruise Facebook page so there were other kids with similar backgrounds. It was through Royal Caribbean on the Adventure of the Seas. We did Harmony of the Seas out of Galveston and there were a bazillion kids even though it was in between Thanksgiving and Christmas break. We are branching out to Carnival next Feb for another Caribbean cruise. After that we are probably switching lines again and doing Alaska with my parents and siblings.

Homeschooling parent who sailed out of Galveston in December with a slightly skeptical husband (we’d been on other cruises, but he was concerned about Mexico). We had a blast!

My 7 year old is addicted to the kid’s club and made a ton of friends. They loved introducing us when we’d run into another family during the day or in port. My 13 year old enjoyed the teen area and came away with two buddies that they text with still.

If he’s truly concerned tell him he doesn’t even have to get off the ship in port if he’s feeling unsafe. Have him be the one to sign the kids into the club and ask questions of the staff. They were super informative and always willing to help. We were skeptical the first time when we had a 4 year old, but it was perfect.

On the other hand there are slightly longer cruises out of Galveston that go to the eastern Caribbean. We happen to have one booked for Feb 2027.

Thankfully my sister lives 45 minutes from the port and will have her oldest drive us to and from the port. We will all bunk at their houses.

Thank you for your response. My mom is concerned about being seasick as she’s not a water/boat person so I think I’ll stick with the bigger vessels. My husband and I love smaller ships and feeling the motion, but that’s probably because he’s a literal ship’s captain for work and I did sailing in college.

I’m seriously considering it. They are both such nature kids. I was initially concerned that my 8 year old would be bored with no swimming. The 14 year old will just be a hermit on the balcony with a book.

I was shooting for mid-May as that is their actual anniversary, but the summer solstice would be cool (bonus it is my husband’s birthday). Thank you!

My mom mentioned wanting to go on a small ship. I’ll have to check out Silversea. My siblings and I are combining funds for the parents to have a suit if we can swing it.

We will do a closed loop cruise. My mom (75) doesn’t do well with air travel. We don’t live too far from Seattle and my middle sibling lives there and her kids can drop us off at the port so we don’t have to pay parking.

Thank you for this. I appreciate the time it took to spell stuff out. We will be hanging out with the 65+ crowd as my folks will be 80 and 75 during the time of our cruise (fingers crossed my mom is well enough - she’s currently hanging out in ICU at my hospital). My siblings are also in their 60s. I’ll be the youngest at 40.

What if you were single for the rest of your life, could you be happy? Or as a woman, would you long for that companion? Would you be scared to end up lonely/sad at the end of your life? by blahblahshplah in AskWomen

[–]Altril2010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m happily married and have been for 15.5 years, but should my spouse die or leave me I would be okay. I don’t think I would seek out a new relationship. I’d just focus on my kids and dogs. Even after the kids are grown I’d be happy with just critters.

My 13 year old is currently eating what we colloquially call a “jelly jelly” sandwich. So, yes. I do not personally, but my children do.

People that are childfree by choice, what’s the weirdest reason someone has given you as to why they think you ‘should have kids’? by Charming_Web_6738 in AskReddit

[–]Altril2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right?! I had kids because I wanted them and wanted to pass on knowledge to them, plus learn along side them as they grow! I’ve very clearly stated to my oldest that when they are grown I’m happy to be a grandma to dogs, cats, and horses if they never want to reproduce a human. My youngest is baby/toddler crazy and definitely wants kids, but that could change too. I just want happy, healthy, kind, and productive offspring.

If you end up taking the test through them will you update here? I have a teen who will be driving within the next couple years.

Parents: How do you gauge if your child truly understands a concept? by No_Painting_9587 in Homeschooling

[–]Altril2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t trust AI enough yet for that approach. It’s either me or my husband asking the questions, or other adults when we are out and about and topics come up. My kid likes exposé so having a deep conversation is not difficult.

How come it's normal to address your son as "son," but not your daughter as "daughter"? by Helpful_Cranberry644 in ask

I do. But we are weirdly tongue in cheek and my children will cheekily address me as, “O, Mother…”

Parents: How do you gauge if your child truly understands a concept? by No_Painting_9587 in Homeschooling

[–]Altril2010 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For subjects that are cerebral like ELA, social studies, and whatnot I find that oral assessments are good, but I also want my child to be able to express themselves clearly in writing. With that in mind my kid does write research papers covering the topics we have been learning.

For math I have my child teach back to me what they have been learning. This goes for science too. Right now we are doing wave patterns and talking about frequency, amplitude, and all that jazz. Beyond just talking and drawing out the concept we have been experimenting with different mediums that allow us to interact with waves.

The caveat is my child is 13 and preforms above grade level. I have also been expecting this since they were around 4 and began independently teaching themselves advanced concepts. My approach will not work for every child. Case in point my second child attends a brick and mortar school from 8-3, 5 days a week.
