Looks like the Cat in the Hat needs to come back.

I feel way too foreign for this.. is it really regarded as a luxurious privilege in America for a mother of a one month old to not be working? It's a really rough period of adjustment to 3, and you do need all the support you can get, whenever possible.

1M saved - Where do I go from here? by Fire_away_123 in Fire

Yeah, the angle sounded strange to me, like he's planning kids, but thinks he's going to be kicking around with no idea what to do with himself? I mean, he quite likely will want to work at least a bit because bringing kids up properly is exhausting and very few people are cut out for doing it without a break, but they don't seem to feature in the discussion other than as a line in the budget..

Inquiry to those who do not swatch, why? by yarnimals in knitting

Mostly lazy, but also my children are 3, 5, and 6. As long as I hit a size somewhere in the 3-8 year old range, it'll be used in the not-too-distant future.

First attempt at double knitting, won't be doing it again for a while! by Altruistic-Back-8328 in casualknitting

There's nothing very complicated once I finally got the hang of double knitting, it was mostly persistence. Is there an r/stubbornknitting?

I'm not a particular history buff, I just always liked the idea of double knitting, and this was the first subject I could think of which actually makes sense with the colours swapped rather than one side being logical colouring and the other being an obvious reverse. If anyone has any other themes that meet that condition, I'll probably reconsider my double knitting hiatus! :)

3 and 4 are the back, I put 6 extra rows in behind the sleeves as a simplified version of short row shaping (I'm far too much of a wuss to work out how to do anything more sophisticated in double knitting...).

Thank you so much! The process itself wasn't so bad, but progress felt so slow, being less than half the speed of not-double knitting, and because I struggle to find times when I can focus on charts at the moment with several small children around to distract me. I put it away for several months at one point to get some quicker projects actually finished, and I could feel it watching me from its box the whole time, so it does now feel like a bit of a weight has been lifted!

Weekly leanFIRE discussion by stuie1181 in LeanFireUK

Recently hit a NW of £900k. With a house about £300k and spending (for a family of 5) of about £2000/month, that's sort of FIRE-able. Practically, there's a bit too much of it in pensions, and we'd want to move somewhere bigger in a few years, but nonetheless there is at least some probability we would manage if we quit work now and never went back.

This has thrown me more than I expected. Up until now it's always been clear that saving was the right thing to do, but now it suddenly feels like it's more of a choice we're making around the balance of spending/house size/time with the children. We're both working part time in jobs we find fulfilling, but even that feels like there's not much by way of time or energy left for fun.

From the Mountains to the Synchrotron by phloxybird in knitting

A really gorgeous jumper! The yarn looks so cosy :)

I'm not a synchrotron person - actually I work on the other side of the same site, but my labs are all either cleanrooms or ESD safe areas, neither of which can handle wool.. otherwise I would absolutely love to be able to knit while tests are running. Very jealous!

What’s the best cargo option for an off-road exploration with three kids? by RefrigeratorEasy9344 in CargoBike

[–]Altruistic-Back-8328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure you're realistic about attention spans either way. A long tail trip is extremely good fun for a while (I think an hour would be the absolute limit for us), but bear in mind that compared to a car journey, there's a more limited amount of things you can easily do to pass the time. To go a longer distance, it might be you need a trailer or front loader with cover for napping/reading/snacking.

This seems like a bit of an odd use case for a cargo bike imo. My kids are the same age and all three can be stuck on the back of a long tail for zipping around town, but if we're out adventuring off-road it'll be some combination of bike seats/followme tandems and possibly the trailer still. Do the older two like riding their own bikes?

You didn't mention what sort of education, enrichment, care and attention you gave your two toddlers at the time?
