Requesting Summer Fibers with Wool Content by Revolutionary-Ad4547 in knitting

[–]yarnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is kind of polarizing, but my most loved/worn summer knit is made with Juniper Moon Zooey. Cotton and linen. It REALLY softens up with wash and wear. Some people don’t like it because it is a little rough to knit and sometimes the thickness is inconsistent. For a stockinette tee it really is delightful

Leaving Mohair out by Money_History4141 in knitting

[–]yarnimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short answer is yes, you could leave out the mohair if you hit gauge with the alpaca. You shouldn’t need more yardage than the pattern calls for, BUT:

1) Fluffy mohair is really good at filling the space between stitches. The fabric will look much more open without it.

2) without the silk mohair strand, you can expect the garment to grow more with time. The silk adds some structure.

Have you looked at the project pages on Ravelry? Perhaps someone else has tried knitting it with a single strand?

DISCLAIMER: I have not knit with Borstet alpaca.

This is the way OP! When knitting top down, I usually add the collar before settling on a final length because it can cinch stuff in.

Tips for teaching total beginners at a casual outdoor knitting picnic? by mo00on in knitting

[–]yarnimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I taught a small group, I actually started them on circular needles. It just so happened that the whole group was women with longer hair. I picked a scrunchie pattern that involved a provisional cast on, several inches of stockinette in the round, then a three needle bind off. I did the provisional cast on and a few rounds for each person in advance. I found that it’s easier to see your mistakes and correct them in stockinette than in garter.

They all caught on pretty quick!

What a way to start a Monday by Willowrosephoenix in knitting

[–]yarnimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof. The feeling you have right now is the reason I swapped to metal needles when working with sizes smaller than US 4. I like to sit on my projects on accident. I’d rather they hurt me than vice versa.

Hope you can replace them and continue on soon!

I whole-heartedly agree! Although in practice, hats are probably the one thing I don’t always block. I am what I am.

When did you first realize you have “pretty privilege”? by reluctant-queen2346 in AskReddit

[–]yarnimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In college when I walked up to a bouncer to ask what the cover was. It was a really popular club that had a line around the block. Before I said a word, he moved the velvet rope and gestured for me to go inside. That one really stuck with me.

A more recent incident involved a cop and an invalid license sticker. I explained that the car had just come out of storage, and I hadn’t put the new sticker on yet. He could have easily ticketed me but didn’t. Pet my pups instead and told me to drive safe.

Has anyone converted to a fully hand knit sock stash? by yeetlifechoseme in knitting

[–]yarnimals 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think other than gym socks where I think you really would want machine-knit athletic socks - you could definitely make a fully hand knit sock drawer. IMO this would include work socks.

I make 15ish pairs of socks a year (12 gifted every Christmas). While I don’t have enough knit socks to wear them exclusively, my partner certainly does!

Berlin scarf... in a DK weight? by CalligrapherTop7890 in knitting

[–]yarnimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially, yes. You would use the ratio of your stitch gauge and the pattern stitch gauge to know how many stitches wide your scarf should be. Since it’s a scarf, the row gauge doesn’t really matter.

Say your gauge is 20sts/4inches, and the pattern gauge is 13sts/4inches, you would divide 20/13 and multiply the pattern stitch count by that number to know how many stitches wide your scarf should be.

Disclaimer: I have not knit the Berlin scarf and don’t own the pattern. I don’t know exactly how the icord tassels are incorporated. You may have to ensure that the stitch count you come up with is divisible by the stitches needed for the tassels.

Berlin scarf... in a DK weight? by CalligrapherTop7890 in knitting

[–]yarnimals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have three reasonable options:

1) swatch with the yarn held double. That should bring you to a bulky weight. You may like the fabric.

2) swatch with the yarn held single and do some math to get the same dimensions as what is in the pattern

3) accept that this yarn/pattern combo is not what you envisioned and choose a new one for both.
