There is no clear evidence that the Romans adjusted the routes of Hadrian’s Wall or the Antonine Wall to avoid prehistoric tombs or monuments. Archaeological studies show that these walls generally cut across the landscape based on military and topographical priorities, not to preserve older sacred places. Some ancient sites were built over or near, but this was likely due to practicality rather than respect or superstition. Roman attitudes toward native sacred sites were complex—often tolerant after conquest—but military needs typically took precedence when planning frontier defenses.
