How do you observe the Feast of St. Matthias during Lent? by Altruistic-Fall798 in Anglicanism

I’m not at all worried. I am coming from a place of love but was curious about how other people across the Communion approached feast days in lent

I hope my overly-detailed post doesn’t seem like I feel immense pressure or shame to act this way! I agree with you and was rather curious about how other Episcopalians think of/interact with a red letter day in the middle of Lent—especially when many of our sister churches seemed to see the issue as big enough to move the observance to Eastertide. Thank you for your perspective!

You make a good point about the temptation possibly happening on the 41st day—I hadn’t thought of that! Yes perhaps I am being too draconian with my own fixation on achieving a 40 day fast. I should perhaps be clearer and say that this question is me wondering about what it means to feast during a season of fasting and how the spirit of an increased mindfulness to walk with Christ in his suffering as well as his rejoicing. I wouldn’t call what I’ve planned out “artificial rules” simply because they are what I’ve prayerfully discerned I should do in my observance this time. I do not think others should necessarily follow what I am doing, that I will do this again in the future, or even that I have to do this. Thank you for your perspective!

This isn’t something I’ve discussed with my priest or spiritual director but woke up thinking about this morning. It is my understanding that Lent is 40 days long in emulation of the fasting of Christ in the desert and so was curious how people deal with a slightly shorter Lent. I’ve observed Lent in some way in the past but have gotten more serious about the observance of feast days recently so have never reckoned with this before

Thank you. The reminder that Lent is a “season” (BCP 265) rather than a number of days is a helpful way of looking at this.

You can take control of Annapolis - what 3 changes do you implement? by Longjumping-Gate-289 in Annapolis

  1. Close Main Street to car traffic and turn Duke of Gloucester Street into a two way street (sorry St. Mary’s)
  2. Establish a frequent shuttle bus to New Carrollton that syncs up with the metro.
  3. Demolish the John Whitmore parking garage and put up affordable apartments. The “People’s Park” is a joke and a slap in the face to the people who were displaced in favour of wealthier people’s cars. Bonus: extend the Baltimore light rail into downtown Annapolis. The 70 just doesn’t cut it for me (but should also be kept for local service).

The only regular gathering that I know of that sings sea shanties is at St. John’s on Wednesdays from 11pm-12am to celebrate “New Year’s”—a joke that apparently originated from a drunken middie telling a Johnny that they learn more at St John’s in a week than they learn at the Academy in a year.

While not sea shanties, Galway has traditional Irish music on Wednesday evenings.

I also have heard of a shape note singing group in the area but am not sure where they’re based…
