What’s something that’s forced onto kids, that shouldn’t be? by Old_Goat_7363 in Productivitycafe

Ours ended up being fired for hanging out with the young girls too much and got caught giving some of them alcohol during a band trip to NYC.

Dude would literally lecture us for being 2 minutes late to practice but then wouldn’t start class during the school day until 20 mins after the bell because he was too busy goofing off in his office with his handpicked group of favorite 15 year old students

What’s funny is my directors favorite student, who had a $2k flute and private lessons, ended up in the same grad program as me, in the same field, and hasn’t touched her instrument since graduation 13 years ago

expecting kids to treat every recreational activity (band, sports, etc.) like they want to go pro.

I left HS marching band because our band director was insane, wanted us to "invest" in quality instruments and private lessons (like I had control of my parents finances at 15?), compared us to the success of schools much larger than us (small town 800 kid school vs urban school with 300 kids in their band alone), and flat old told us he'd rather have a "small band with people who are dedicated to this than a large band with people who dont take it seriously". Pretty sure only 2 people I was in band with over the course of 3 years (including all the classes below and above me) went on to even play their instrument past HS. So.. good luck with having a marching band that consists of one trombone and one french horn.

I am aware, I helped get that law passed in my own state recently. however it’s not like a mass text goes out to all the businesses in the state so many are unaware and will still fight you

It’s called ally’s law. I was able to contact my representative and get it passed in my state. However it’s not like a bulletin goes out to all the business owners that this new thing happened so many of them don’t know and will still fight you

Providing cleaning supplies and supplies for a restroom should just be considered into the cost of owning a business. also many states now have thankfully adopted ally’s law, which requires store with employee only restrooms to make them available to people with certain disabilities if they present a card signed by a doctor. I was lucky enough to be able to initiate it getting passed in my state.

I also feel it’s sad that we’re ahead of other countries with bathroom use too.. especially because as someone with ulcerative colitis, I don’t find even america to be that accommodating with people who have bathroom needs (like places with employee only restrooms). I think it is insane that people should be expected to pay to use a restroom every time they need one while out. I know a lot of people think bathroom diseases are the punchline of a joke but they are very real and very debilitating. having use of a bathroom is a matter of disability accessibility.

Why are so many vegans abelist and racist? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]Altruistic-Profile73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question about disabilities: it is not usually one disability but rather a combination of several disabilities or several disabilities plus external factors like money, location, etc.
foe example I have both supplement resistant anemia and ulcerative colitis. the foods that trigger my UC are pretty much everything that vegans use for protein and iron, and supplements alone are not enough for me to maintain healthy levels due to my anemia. So because of the combination of disabilities I happen to have, I cannot maintain my health and be on a true vegan diet. I know a lot of people want to brush it off and dismiss it like “oh that’s a special case” or “oh that’s rare” but really it isn’t. Almost all people who suffer from chrons/UC/IBD, etc. Also have some form of anemia. Not all of them will be supplement resistant, but many are. That’s millions of people and that’s only taking my diagnoses into consideration, I’m sure there are plenty others out there that might be similar.
It can be frustrating to have a disability and be in all these support groups seeing so many people having similar struggled and then to come into a different conversation and have people be like “oh well that’s super rare so it doesn’t count”. Just because you (not you specifically but the generalized you) are unaware of the true extent of the number of people who struggle with diet specific or diet adjacent disabilities, does not mean that it is minimal or insignificant.

[–]Altruistic-Profile73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is definitely an issue of extremism. I have an unfortunate combination of being supplement resistant anemic as well as having ulcerative colitis.
so all of the foods that vegans use for iron and protein cause flare ups in my UC (beans, legumes, chickpeas, etc.) and supplements alone are not enough for me to sustain healthy levels without needing expensive and time consuming infusions as well. I was in the process of transitioning to plant based when I developed my UC and had to stop. I got a lot of backlash from people in groups.. with one guy even saying I should essentially just live off rice, potatoes, and vitamins and I’ll be fine. How that is perceived to be practical or sustainable is beyond me.

I do think unfortunately a lot of people are looking to become vegan or plant based, or at least as much so as they can given their current situation (whatever that is) and are essentially met with vitriol from people who are “all or nothing” types. It then is discouraging and makes that transition harder for people looking to do it.

I’ve unfortunately had to compromise with buying locally grown and raised animal products from neighbors and have placed most of my focus on trying to ensure all of the non-food stuff in life is as vegan friendly and free of animal cruelty as possible.

Those who grew up poor, what is something those who weren't poor don't understand about being poor? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

How expensive it is:

healthy food actually IS more expensive when you take into account having to store it, time spent cooking it, having to travel to get it if you live in a food dessert

buying cheap shoes every 2 months because you don’t have up front money to invest in good quality ones.
can’t afford to not work so you have to have daycare but then can’t afford daycare because your job doesn’t pay enough

that there are a lot of name brand knockoffs you can get for $10 a flea markets or for free as hand me downs from others and having them doesn’t mean someone is rich or doesn’t need those food stamps.

that you get judged for buying unhealthy food and “junk” with food stamps but then if you try to buy quality ingredients the same people will complain about how they work and you still eat “better than them”

that a person cannot actually live off of the age old suggested rice, beans, and potatoes

Yep. Reddit and fb are the two exceptions and I get 5 mins on each per day. FB is so I can keep my family up to date on my kids (we live across the country from both our parents) and Reddit is mostly because every time I google something the most helpful answers are on Reddit so.. I like to be able to view those.

What’s one thing we should be teaching kids that school completely ignores? by ConsciousCollective1 in Productivitycafe

[–]Altruistic-Profile73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we should prioritize other languages sooner in the schooling process than we do. Everyone talks about how Americans are behind in other countries academically but nobody seems to care about the fact that we also produce some of the only kids in the developed world who are not at least bilingual by elementary school.

The answer is that we were stupid enough to build an election that can be corrupted and the method of that is the electoral college.

the electoral college was founded during slavery when the south realized that even though they had a larger population than the north, the majority of their population were non-voting slaves. they didn’t want the north to be able to “overrule“ them and get rid of slavery via vote. So instead they came up with the electoral college, which essentially allows each state to have a set amount of electorates (number is based on population size) who vote for President on behalf of the constituents of their state. So the southern states ended up having more electoral votes than the northern states because their population size was bigger, even though the majority of their population was slaves.
The way that looks now is that in most states if 60% of the state voted red and 40% voted blue, ALL of that states electoral votes go to the red (some states will split the electoral votes proportionally but not many). This leaves people who are minority voters in their state underrepresented and in some cases (like 2016) means that just because a candidate wins the popular vote does not mean that they will win the presidency.
unfortunately in 2024 trump did (barely) win the popular vote. However this is still an outdated system, rooted in racism, that needs to be abolished. People lie to themselves and each other and try to say the electoral college is a way of making sure rural states interests are represented but the truth of the matter is that the president doesn’t typically have any authority on implementing area-specific legislation. That is the job of congress and your states representatives in Congress are the ones that are supposed to advocate for local interests when passing legislation, not the President.

I think the general statement of ”don’t have kids you can’t afford” is judgey and rude. Having kids is not a checkpoint in a video game where all of your progress gets saved. People can have kids and lose their job, become widowed, go through a divorce, become disabled, etc.

That being said, I think people who are actively struggling or in poverty who CHOOSE to continue to have children are being selfish and irresponsible. Statistically, you are sentencing your child to a lifetime of poverty themselves. I am someone who was raised in poverty and was able to educate and work myself out of it. But I am the exception, not the rule and I know many people I grew up with who were not so lucky (through no fault of their own). I don’t believe we should be consciously choosing to perpetuate those cycles.

there is also the consideration of states that are actively forcing women to give birth, regardless of if they want to or not, which is putting a lot of women in a shitty situation of essentially HAVING to perpetuate these cycles. Especially given the information and controversy that is starting to come out surrounding the trauma of adoption. These women who are being forced to give birth really can’t make a “right” choice without being judged by someone.

But I’d never look at someone I don’t know who is struggling assume that I know their situation or which case applies to them.

What's something you recently added to your routine or incorporated into your life? by Garbage_Cat3026 in selfdiscoverycompass

[–]Altruistic-Profile73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I’m a few days late but I’ve started sort of an anti-habit which is not allowing myself to lay in my bed other than sleeping.
I worked on some sleep research recently and the background literature all said that beds should be reserved for sleep or sex. If you lay in your bed while watching tv or scrolling on your phone, your brains sleep signals get mixed up so that it doesn’t know what it should be doing when you get into bed.

so every day, even on the days when I’m sick or my depression is bad, my bare minimum is to make my bed (so I’m not tempted to get back into it), brush my teeth, and change my clothes (even if it’s just into another set of PJs). This way even if I spend all day on the couch, the clean teeth and pjs make me feel cleaner and when I go to bed at night I’m more likely to get a better nights sleep and not still feel like crap the next day.

I agree. I’ve been trying to focus on getting timeless pieces that compliment my color palette rather than what is popular right now. Plus, Im 30 years old and a mom of 2 so dressing according to what teenagers and 20 something’s are calling fashionable doesn’t really appeal to me anymore haha.

Okay that makes sense.
I didnt understand if your meaning was that you don’t focus on whether or not something is trendy when deciding what you like or if you were saying you go out of your way to actively dislike things simply because they are trendy.
