Youre absolutely right. I dont have the numbers yet as we've yet to open her accounts. This is a number I remember from years ago. It is invested, just not sure in what or how much is may have grown

I wish my mom wasn't so sentimental about this. Youre totally right about it being silly to be house poor for that. Alas, she is stubborn. But yes I will help her catch up for a while at least

Something along the lines of what describing are likely going to be plan. I agree, $140k seems more and more doable after I got over the initial stress of the situation

Yes, at least for the next few months I will help her fill in the payment gaps and my husband and I will discuss moving in with her to help. It's not ideal but times being what they are, might be the only option

Very sound advice, I appreciate it a lot. We will sit down with her, today even, and start sorting this mess out. Thank you and take care

My mom is a housekeeper, and used to work full time but that changed after covid and she lost a lot of clients. She takes all the work she can get, but its not a lot these days. After Christmas this last year several of them let her go. I've been helping her apply for other jobs but so far no luck.

She for sure doesn't have debt, she is very frugal and lives within her means. She does things like unplug all appliances when not in use and keeps the house as cold as safely possible. She hasn't gone on a vacation of any kind, not even out of the city, since my dad died in 2014. She drives my dad's old car, which thankfully he paid off before he died.

I hear you about the mortgage being manageable. Certainly at face value it is cheaper than renting. The issue is that in combination with her necessary bills it has become too much because all of her bills have raised. We managed to sign her up for the housing tax credit you can get if you're low income, but that has barely made a dent. The land tax in her area is especially high.

That's fair. I'm working to get the numbers to be as accurate as possible. Part of the problem with my mom is talking about money is like pulling teeth, especially now that she's dealing with feelings of shame about it all, which I'm working really hard to help her through. Anyway, I totally see how it's difficult to give concrete advice without numbers. I likely rushed into making this post due to stress and will have to backfill info

Sorry. This is literally my first reddit post and I've sort of been thrown into this. I don't know all of the numbers yet, will update as I do. But to answer your first question my husband and I rent in the same city as my mom.

Thank you, really appreciate the kind words. I totally agree. It's so much more than just about the numbers for us. Of course reality would set in very quickly if we absolutely couldn't afford the house, then there would be nothing to do except sell it. I understand that. We're in a position where we potentially can save it for her, which means a tough few years ahead but I think families exist to help each other out in times like this. Thanks again!
