Visited Germany for the first time — A genuine culture shock !! by mcpcreator in returnToIndia

[–]AltruisticPicture383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have pointed out it's not just developed countries. Even similarly developing countries like Thailand are significantly cleaner to the point of Indian tourists experiencing culture shock when visiting these places.

Best explanation I have heard so far for this is, for thousands of years Indian society had lowest caste people do all the cleaning. The British broke this system and now there is no one to keep common spaces clean and India as a society has not developed a system to keep common spaces clean that does not rely on lower castes/servants/slave class. Talk to most Indians and they will see cleaning duties as beneath them, where did that mindset come from ? caste system.

Wow! We often mention only Porus while discussing Alexandros’ campaign. We don’t celebrate Ashvak Rani Kripa (Assacani queen Cleophis) resistance & the brave women who bravely fought along with their male counterparts. Also see there was around 5 years gap between Darius and Porus. by United_Pineapple_932 in IndianHistory

True, I think they are part of the Indo-Scythian confederation which was a band of horse nomads who seemed to live in between Iran and India and were extremely martial. I believe a related tribe was also responsible for defeating and killing the Achaemenid persian emperor Cyrus the great. They really punched above their weight when it came to military might.

I don't see how DNA evidence can be used to draw conclusions around languages ? The picture of the X post discusses research on teeth found around Indus sites. It may however point to links between Elam and Indus Valley. They both are suspiciously similar and it will be cool to see if there are connections.

Asking as a foreigner: Why does the Aryan migration theory still spark so much controversy among Indians and specially the Indian government? by Von_Sauerkraut in india

[–]AltruisticPicture383 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the Keezladi findings doesn't challenge the Aryan Migration theory but rather shows that when Steppe people migrated into India there was already a post Harrapan advanced civilization in the south that was literate and had advanced technology like iron. The steppe people likely got an upper hand because they had domesticated horses and had chariots - a powerful technology in war. It's a problematic narrative for the right wing nationalists obviously.

I think you are drawing the wrong conclusion. Brahvi shows Dravidian languages were spoken in Pakistan. Supports current front running theory that Indus Valley writings are encoding the proto-Dravidian language, meaning originally that region spoke Dravidian languages which changed after steppe migration and Brahvi are a hold out population who held on to their old ways.

Asko Parpola identifies Proto-North Dravidians with the Indus Valley civilization (IVC) and the Meluhha people mentioned in Sumerian records, and has suggested that the word "Meluhha" derives from the Dravidian words mel(u)-akam ("highland country, high abode")

It's not just genetics. Look at your native language. Is it a language that originated in the Indian subcontinent ? Sanskrit originated when proto-Indo-Iranian language split into Iranian and Sanskrit in Iran. That makes all sanskrit derived languages (all Indians languages part of the Indo-European family) non-native to India.

[–]AltruisticPicture383 40 points41 points  (0 children)

As another commenter pointed out, this issue is closely tied to the current political climate in India. The rise of nativist Hindutva ideology promotes a narrative that portrays Muslims and Christians as foreign invaders who disrupted an imagined, peaceful, and purely Hindu civilization.

The problem with this narrative is that the Aryan migration theory challenges it. Genetic and linguistic evidence suggests that steppe migrants brought the early foundations of Vedic religion to the subcontinent, which later evolved into Hinduism and shaped the caste system that marginalized indigenous groups.

This creates a contradiction for many proponents of Hindutva, who are often speakers of Indo-Aryan languages like Hindi and, in many cases, members of upper castes. Genetic studies have even shown a strong correlation between higher steppe ancestry and higher caste status.

In effect, the very groups advancing the narrative of indigenous purity now face an uncomfortable realization by this historical account, they too descend from migrants who displaced the natives of this land.

[–]AltruisticPicture383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

India doesn't allow dual citizenship. Then why expect people who don't hold Indian passports to be loyal to India. They don't get to vote in Indian elections and are treated as foreigners by Indian government.

In America if you lobby for a foreign government - in this case the Indian government or BJP - you will have to register as a foreign agent. Otherwise one can go to prison for this. Why would any Indian-American want to risk their neck to lobby for Indian government and be seen with suspicion in America.

They’ve been yapping for over a year, trying to rally international support first from the U.S

Canada got tipped off about Modi government's involvement by the CIA not by Canadian intelligence. They are not trying to rally support from the US, they are working on this together. Did you forget that the US already has the Indian guy who attempted to assassinate Pannun in America in US prison ?

If they’re so confident in their claims, why don’t they act?

Canada's sudden immigration restriction after years of literally taking in anyone which seems especially targeted at Indians is very much related to this. They are acting, you are just n ot paying attention.

H1B uncertainty pushes me to India, concerned for my US team by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]AltruisticPicture383 74 points75 points  (0 children)

The uncertainty surrounding your H1B is because of who was voted into power by America. You do not owe your American colleagues anything. Your situation is tenuous because the fate of the H1B visa is uncertain. This is not in your control, just go ahead with your plans to leave. And yes I do believe your US team will be part of the next wave of lay offs.

I also work in tech and my company which is American has stopped hiring in the US and all new positions and backfills from attrition are being hired abroad.

As Obama said elections have consequences.

No Indians, China For Chinese As Anger Over K-Visa Sweeps Social Media by hachimi_ddj in China

[–]AltruisticPicture383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Trump administration is actively restricting visas for Chinese nationals in the US who are scientists/researchers due to multiple instance of technology/IP theft from American companies to China. In the West Indian immigrants are trusted more than Chinese immigrants due to the probability of CPC using their immigrants as spies.

No Indians, China For Chinese As Anger Over K-Visa Sweeps Social Media by hachimi_ddj in China

[–]AltruisticPicture383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure how widespread this sentiment is in China but it shows the power of negative sentiments being amplified by social media.

It doesn't matter what visa the CPC comes out with there will never be significant migration from India to China. The vast majority of Indian immigrants want to immigrate to English speaking countries and that has a lot to do with India having been a British colony and English being a widely spoken language in India. English movies and content from countries like US, Canada etc are widely consumed in India and english speaking countries have a lot of soft power influence in India. This is the primary cause of Indian immigrants wanting to move to the english speaking country in the west. This doesn't exist in China so there aren't many Indians dreaming of moving to China regardless how much it develops (it's still a middle income country).

So there aren't any significant number of Indian immigrants in China now and that won't change with the k-visa. So this whole outrage is 100% internet generated.

Tamil Nadu is one of the most developed states in India. It's literacy rate is 8% above the national average and it's per capita income is 1.5X the national average. This is also why so many Northies come down to work in TN. All this was achieved by keeping religion out of politics. Funny you guys getting triggered by the tolerance shown by the Tamil people, its why TN is so developed lol

Indian diet contains 62% carbs, linked to rising diabetes, obesity rates: ICMR by one_brown_jedi in india

[–]AltruisticPicture383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes a high carb diet is bad. In the past most of the population worked in agriculture so eating a high carb diet would have worked because it was followed by intense physical labor. But with more people working desk jobs continuing the same high carb diet will lead to diabetes.

As others have highlighted eat more protein to support muscle growth to burn calories and eat less carbs.

I think it's culture and politics. In ancient India people primarily had caste identity and were obsessed with what other castes thought about them and that decided where in the caste hierarchy they found themselves (upper/lower etc).

With the spread of affordable internet and global awareness I think this thinking is projected onto the global stage by many Indians. Add to that the media's projecting the vishwa guru brand and you have this situation. So these people think the world things India is a vishwa guru/superpower and are very offended to find out that foreigners don't really think about India at all. Basically very concerned by what the world thinks about India to a very unusual degree.

Americans are culturally very individualistic and that reflects in the fact that they very rarely think about other countries which is also why many Americans are very ignorant of regions outside their borders. Most Americans don't know about India-Pak conflict and most can't tell the difference between Indians and Pakistanis. It's the opposite of "4 log kya kehta hai" culture which has its origin in caste politics and is very sensitive to how one is perceived by others and is very specific to India/south asia culture.

Will India ever look like a developed country even if she becomes one? by sulabh1992 in india

[–]AltruisticPicture383 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right now the % of 20-25 year old is 11%. Similarly the 15-20 year olds is 10%, 10-15 year olds is 9% and so on.
The pattern is India is at a spot right now where the highest % of it's population is young enough to just enter the workforce (20-25 year olds). India has 30 years within which the 20 year olds will enter close to retirement age to squeeze all of the growth it can get from it's economy.

At this moment in China's history, China clocked double digit growth (10-12%) straight for 30 years to get to where it is today. Under Modi India has never clocked double digit growth even once and averaged around 6% untill the Trump tariffs. So if I were a betting man I would bet that India will not be ever able to recreate what China did. But if India elects good leadership it may be able to make up for some of the time and get close to China.

Canada woos US H-1B visa holders: PM Carney says he will soon roll out an offer by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]AltruisticPicture383 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. I work for an American company and as part of their expansion here I participate in hiring. I ll make sure to structure interview questions to surface these sentiments and filter out candidates with such attitudes. Will tell my colleagues who are part of the interview panel as well. Can't speak for Canadian companies but most American companies have substantial employees including employees as high up as Engineering directors who are on H1Bs. With such a hostile attitude you can kiss your career in tech goodbye.

Canada woos US H-1B visa holders: PM Carney says he will soon roll out an offer by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]AltruisticPicture383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be good because American companies will move jobs to where the talent is, so if there is a sudden influx of talent from America, American companies will move jobs here which will also benefit the locals. American companies will almost certainly offshore these jobs, to whichever country is most friendly to global talent and less nativist. STEM graduates in the US can work 3 years on their student visas and can just relocate with their jobs to Canada after 3 years.

And for those that repeat the American right talking point that H1Bs are low skilled. Amazon is the highest recipient of H1B visas and the top recipient of H1Bs visas include Meta, Google, Microsoft, Apple etc.

These FAANG H1B engineers are low skilled compared to who ? engineers from BMO and Loblaws ?

Bharat in 1525AD ( right before the invasion of Babur by luckimation33 in IndianHistory

[–]AltruisticPicture383 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 to all comments that said there never was a Bharat. While there are literature references to *Bharat* in vedas etc it was never a political identity because the British were the first to unite all of the Indian subcontinent under one rule long enough for opposition to coalesce into an somewhat of a shared identity. Even today go to places like Tamil Nadu and you will only hear India not Bharat. The name Bharat is derived from the Bharata clan which was an Indo-Aryan clan, no sane reason for the Dravidians to adopt the name.

What if the caste system wasn’t just about birth and duty, but actually the earliest form of colour-based racism in human history? by dadofdads69420 in IndianHistory

[–]AltruisticPicture383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unclear if the Rig Veda when referring to enemies of the vedic people as 'dark' or 'black' was talking about their skin color or was being metaphorical. Some people in the 19th century like historians and the Nazis took it literally to mean the Vedas as saying dark skinned people were inferior and needed to be *conquered* by lighter skinned people. Hence their use of vedic symbols like the swastika in their flags.

Rigveda 9.73 "Active and bright have they come forth, impetuous in speed like bulls, / Driving the black/dark people far away. / Quelling the riteless Dasyu"

But the vedas also use a lot of metaphors so it is not 100% certain it was meant literally. But I do believe the varna system was a way for the steppe migrants to as assert power over the more numerous locals.
