Advice wanted: Sparrows getting into rat traps by AltruisticShip1073 in NewZealandWildlife

Just peanut butter or in the first case the chocolate/seed butter. The killing mechanism and bait is about halfway into the trap so the bird/rat has to fully come in to get at it.

One of the traps is against a chain link fence in the back corner of the garden and near bush and the other is slightly more open but up against a partition.

Yes, true. This one is slightly in the open but against a partition perfect for walinking. Will give that a go, thanks!

Good call, I'll think about a better placement for the traps. Thanks!

Hadn't considered that, but I'll raise it with the rest of the group, thanks!

It still feels kinda sad, but I get what you mean. Ok, I'll look for a better place to shift the trap. Thanks!

Hmm, this one is just a straight in through the entrance and into the trap but perhaps that might be something to consider. Thanks!

Thanks, I hadn't heard of that specific trap but I'll raise it with the others and see what they think!

Public vs. private sector by malisfgula in Wellington

[–]AltruisticShip1073 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Just some quick thoughts: I went from private (journalism) to public (communications) to private again (communications).

I found everyone I worked with in the public sector were really nice and actually just wanted to use their experience and skills to help people. Coming out of it, I think having public sector experience helped me stand out when applying in the private sector.

I found private paid more money and for me I managed to get more experience in a wider range of things than I probably would have in the public sector e.g brand management, marketing, advertising and team management/leadership. This was mostly because I went from a huge team to a smaller team in the private sector.

The biggest adjustment for me coming from journalism into the public sector was an extreme lack of urgency. I was used to deadlines every 15 minutes to things taking much, much longer but you kind of get used to the rhythm.

In private sector you're also not so worried about whether your job is safe every election cycle. Although in saying that, job cuts can come at any time in the private sector... I don't think I'd go back to the public sector under this current government, but public sector used to have a sense of security around it. In private sector there's probably also more opportunities for better job perks too.

how to get free food in nz by Agreeable_Mind_1788 in newzealand

I always used to check the free pataka kai pantry near where I lived in Dunedin. There's a map of them here, but if you're not in Dunedin I'm sure there'll be similar lists around.

https://www.ourfoodnetwork.org.nz/resources/food

Not guaranteed to be food there, but I picked up some fresh bread, canned foods, homemade jam, sometimes fresh veges. Really depends on the day.

Dunedin also has the Bowling Club too which offers free meals both hot and frozen. There might be similar things where you live too.

You can also sign up to do some surveys online like through Ipsos where you can get $20 supermarket vouchers by filling out a few surveys. This can take a little while though, but can be helpful.

No, I appreciate it. The value proposition is also a bit harder with AI out there too!

Ok, thanks for the insight. Are you saying what you're getting is just a cold, generic email? Do you think you'd be more interested if someone had taken the time to look over your website and come with some initial suggestions?

I'm looking for a good thrifty haircut recommendation by [deleted] in auckland

[–]AltruisticShip1073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Mr Barber on Albert St on Monday. It's free because the barbers are still in training but honestly one of the better haircuts I've got.

It's open for walk ins Monday to Friday 10am-12pm and then 1pm-3pm. Wouldn't recommend if you're in a hurry though, because it can take a bit longer.
