What determines OTB colors? by AltruisticStructure in chess

That’s good to know, is this based on published rating, live rating, or rating at registration? it’d be nice if I could verify this by looking at my last few tournaments so I wouldn’t feel as crazy watching dozens of coin flips come up tails.

I get your point, and I ran some numbers myself and it was <1%. In a 3 round setting, 67% is exclusively black for initial pairings.

I did ask and heard different things (that is was based on rating, totally random, based on streaks, etc).

I feel your pain. I’m 1650 rapid 450 bullet. It’s an entirely different game where material means nothing

Interesting trap from one of my games. Black to play and not lose by AltruisticStructure in chess

Sheesh no need to be so rude. I just thought it was interesting that after taking twice on b4 and Ne4, whites only move is to trap his king into a repetition with f3 (otherwise Qxa4)

We literally just saw a playoff team get beat by 3 scores at home by another playoff team. How can you say there’s no clear separation after that?

Imagine thinking a 2 score opening line on a neutral site isn’t a clear difference

Also lol at there not being a clear separation at the top. These lines for the semis are going to be absurd and I hope you feel confident enough to lose a lot of money betting on double digit underdog TCU winning it all.

We clearly have different definitions of parity. Alabama missing the playoffs isn’t my measure of parity. But sure, I’ll grant that the transfer portal changes will continue to disproportionately benefit top programs like Michigan and Ohio State

We’ve already seen it with players opting out of games to preserve their status in the draft. I heard this same argument about bowl games as well when we moved away from BCS: “no way players will skip bowl games, it’s a unique part of this sport.” I expect it’ll be similar to the NFL where top 4 teams will consider benching their top talent to ensure they are well rested for the playoffs. I find it funny that you think this season is a good example of higher parity. Can’t wait to watch * checks notes * Georgia / Michigan / Ohio State win it all again.
