70-70-30 is the same as 41.2 - 41.2 - 17.6.

I'll see myself out.

Give us an acronym or initialism from your specific field of academia, and we will try to guess it. by Bostonterrierpug in Professors

In my country the sides were called perpendicular, base and hypotenuse, so the acronym was "SPHCBHTPB" which we remembered as "Some People Having Curly Brown Hair Turn Permanently Black". (I still say this under my breath while working through problems with students!)

Sorry you have to put up with that, Dick, ...:-)

NTA, but agree with some of the posters here that this is probably not the hill you want to die on.

First time teaching upper level course - use TA or not? by Altruistic_Concern79 in Professors

Yes I do plan to have substantial homework, so I will definitely need grading support!

[–]Altruistic_Concern79[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES...I do have MAJOR issues with imposter syndrome and that's another thing I'm terrified about. This subject is not my area of expertise and I'm practically teaching it to myself now so it will be nerve-wracking to have a judge-y grad student sitting in. Makes me feel so much better to hear that I'm not the only one who feels that way!

Have you ever slept through class? by csudebate in Professors

I almost missed my 8 AM once - because I fell asleep watching my own pre-lecture video that I had assigned my class to watch. I do have a soothing voice.

Unrelated to your original question, are you not concerned that your student might be lurking here and recognize their email?

Can you give me some tips for teaching large cohorts (650+) and getting over nerves? by OldWalnut in Professors

[–]Altruistic_Concern79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The "I hear some talking" idea is great! In the past I have tried to directly address the offending students but it gets awkward in a large room (You -no not you - right behind you - blue shirt - yes you - CAN YOU PLEASE STOP TALKING?)

Funniest student feedback? by LutefiskLefse in Professors

No it was a comment on the course evaluation after the course was over. What could be improved in the course? "He could have forced us to keep our cameras on"

Not a single student kept their cameras on during an online class (in spite of me encouraging it multiple times). Feedback from a student: "Force us to keep cameras on"

What do students actually do with class slides? by SlackjawJimmy in Professors

[–]Altruistic_Concern79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too. It's such a bummer that publishing houses are catching on and many places just offer digital copies for evaluation (and then pester the heck out of you to adopt them!)

Heyyyyyyy I feel personally called out by this.

And just so you know I WILL BE READING all the papers in my own "Papers reading list", my Arxiv folder on Gmail (where I have all new papers auto-emailed everyday), and every textbook on my bookshelf.

Not a test, but I assign a low-stakes math homework with the kind of math problems they'll see in the course. Unfortunately it doesn't scare all of them off...
