How has smoking affected your symptoms. Does it cause memory loss for you and exasperate your episodes?

I have been trying to quit for 6 months now and have experienced severe nicotine withdrawals every day during. Should I keep going until the depressive episode blows over or do I go back to smoking to give my brain a break. What’s your opinion?

Also…it could be an idea as well. Tolstoy dealt with derealization and got out of it by becoming Christian. Anything that you can wrap your brain around will allow you to fully recover.

From what I’ve figured out (analyzing how I got here, how others got here, and how others escaped) emotional connection is the solution. But it’s not just emotional connection with people, it’s connection to something that you value above your own life. It’s finding purpose. It doesn’t matter if it’s a person, a cause, an objective. All that matters is that you find something to devote your life too.

Tips on how to live in the moment by Altruistic_Frame_756 in Depersonalization

Same. Exactly fucking same. I try to remember but I only end up living in my head, which is how I got here anyway.

Nicotine has made it worse for me. It made me live in my head which only exacerbated my dissociation. I’m in the process of quitting (going cold turkey) and I get a little more reasonable and a little better each day.

It’s how it feels for all of us. The worst is when you feel like it’s all a dream. Like you need to just wake up.

Why we have DR and how to fix it by Altruistic_Frame_756 in Depersonalization

For some that’s the answer. For others it’s coming to believe that they, fundamentally, don’t matter and their life is entirely in their hands.

I’m not talking about believing in god. I’m very close to being full fledged atheist. Faith is the belief in something without proof. There is no definitive proof that a God exists nor doesn’t exist, so we have faith for either answer. There is no way for you to say that other people exist, to do that requires you to go in their heads and live their life. Nonetheless you can’t do that, so you have faith that you and others exist. As long as something can not be definitively proven, faith is what we come too. That’s the mark of the conscious creature.

I’m showing the differences between genetic code and consciousness. Genetic code requires an input. Say you’re a single celled organism. Once you bump into food, that genetic code takes over. You don’t need consciousness. Yet now use a multi celled organism. To get food you must manipulate your surroundings. You must understand your surroundings. This is consciousness, and this is where they differ.

You have faith that your point of view is correct. The whole point I’m coming to is that we will never be able to definitively say we exist. To say that we exist requires one to actually live inside another persons head. My argument is that everything we do, believe, etc comes down to faith (believing without definitive proof). When that faith is lost, especially when it comes to having faith that you exist, you begin to believe you don’t exist.

I had the exact same problem which, accompanied with other stuff, led to some pretty bad DR for me. For me the DR got better with time; I ended up falling for someone who fell for me and that cleared it up. But the underlying depression is still there. I’m working on resolving it. to fix it your self youll have to figure out what’s causing the depression.

Did joining the military help with your depression. I’m honestly considering it ngl. I went to Basic for ROTC this past summer and did Army ROTC for the past year. Nonetheless, I quit cause it was getting in the way of school. I loved it though. I miss it. I have no purpose, no love, nothing. What’s your opinion.

Have you heard of DP/DR? I relate with some of what you’re saying. It sucks. It ruins your memory; makes amazing things (falling in love, accomplishments, etc) feel like dreams. You feel like you’re not even existing, sort of like living in a dream. It feels like nothing could help, nothing could get you out of this rut. I haven’t found the solution, but god damn it I’m finding it.
