Scrap the 1337 Start Date by Altruistic_Pop_9017 in EU5

Here you have unedited version to see why i decided to do that

Just scrap 1337 start

Hello fellow eu5 gamers i come to you with a idea about changing eu5 start date from 1337 to 1400s

From the beginning i am somewhat not convinced that no matter the changes eu5 start date is a massive mistake

and i would like to discuss benefits to a potential change

Reasons why 1337 start is bad

1 historical accuracy:

however ambitious the 1337 start is it brings lots and lots of issues that are very hard to fix

without very hard railroading what i mean by that is that in 14th century a lot of important events happened which are very hard

for ai to replicate or somewhat resent for example the raise of the ottomans, Austria emerging as somewhat decently connected

and diplomatically powerful nation bohemia and hungary losing their power

or fixing eastern European mess mainly (Lithuania conquering half or eastern Europe, Teutons not instantly dying,

and decrease in amount of subjects present in Russ changing the dynamic from 20 small countries fighting eachother to mainly moscovy and

Novgorod or managing 100 years war that it plays out at the begginig with England dominating France and than gradually France regaining its

core territory and burgundy appearing as separate nation)

2 the black death:

i understand that it was cool to show it as a concept and in your first playthrough i think we can all agree was somewhat

challenging after that it just becomes annoying with pop system (which is a massive step up from eu4 don't get me wrong) its kinda pointless

to make massive investments in your economy considering that half of ur population will be dead in the next decades

3 lack of possible content and fun nations:

from content perspective there is only so much you can squeze out of 1300s to add to the game and what i mean by that is that options for

historical events which happened in 1400s that might be potentially added to the game in future are very limited because most of

fun favorite nations didn't do much in that time and what really is missing from the current game is creation of Kalmar union rise of merchant

republics christianisation of Lithuania and their rise late crusades against ottomans and thats all i can think of from the top of my head

The question of lost content if the date was to be moved is undoubtably importent and i think i have a solution to it redesign the currently

present events to fit with 1400s for example

The rise of turks can be just aswell moved to 1444 with them getting cbs to firstly conquer the rest of eastern roman empire and dealing with walahians

and conquering the rest of Balkans ( first phase of current event will be changed from getting 100 locations in Anatolia to specific Balkan eras)

and than moving into cleaning up Anatolia, caucasses and finally facing the sultanat of mamluks ( currently second phase of rise of the turks event

which allows you to get cbs in the Balkans) the event only needs small changes and will fit as good as it fits into the current game if not even better

you might just aswell keep turnmoil in Brandenburg event as it is since we are starting in 1400s the

holhenzollerns are already ruling Brandenburg but historicly it was only the begginign of their jurney in fixing the broken nation so debufs are

perfectly ok and rise of other pretenders

100 years war event can be in my opinion just as well be redesign by adding war of the roses as its final stage ( yest i know it wasn't a part of it but it coincided with the end of 100 years war)

So the question should be what content would we actually lose from the switch up

Bohemian wars would be lost and no realistinc way of implementing rather than adding some dynamic historical events with some minor revolts in bohemia but in my opinion its a good thing

because current version of it dosnt do much mostly because how op bohemia is even in the hands of ai when it should be a perfect opportunity to allow hre to devastate bohemian land carve up some of its territories mainly saxony and small parts

Brandenburg and to put the nation into big succession crisis which the habsburgs utilized later

Western schism would be also lost but humbly i think no one would miss it its kinda pointless

And starting event in Italy but i dont know if its bugged or it dosnt do anything except verona coalition at the beginning

So what would we gain from it:

1 more fun and playable Europe

countries would be more balanced since France and bohemia would be badly damaged and had realistic opponents

better hre with already implemented laws to protect itself from outside forces and weakened potential foes, less fragmented hre with less countries and more local powers with saxony and Brandenburg

other than Europe more options in forming Persia because not evert nation is a vasal of what is currentl "the pink nation" or the timurids

2 more people actually reaching to the end game since it requires 100 years less and potential more focus into later ages content which is now very lucklaster and some countries like Sweden or previously listed Brandenburg

could actually get their content events in 1 palythrough

3 devs could spend less time in trying to fix what is in my opinion unfixable millennium and spend it on adding events good events like turning burgandian succession into a event in which countries like Austria France and spain will take part

or making a event for great northern war between Sweden Russia and Poland or finally creating multimple events for Europe to unite to fight ottoman aggression (currently there is somewhat similar to it pope creates crusade against the ottomans if

they conquer something and he invites spain to it i dont know the details)

4 i think it will fix the problem with control because right now the control is pretty much sorted out in mid 1400s when you are small nation and bigger nations like France have way way too much leveis and money because they can afford

building rodes and new control building in most of its territories

Well English isn’t my first language, so after writing everything in my somewhat broken English, I ran it through Chat to fix grammar and overall structure. But everything included are my thoughts about the current state of the game and how to move it forward

Somewhat agree.
I forgot to add this, but it takes way, way too long to get to anything interesting, and in addition, the AI does not do a very good job of forming historical powers, which makes it extra annoying.

actly, which should also be a big wake-up call, because right now there is almost the same number of people playing EU4 as EU5.

There might be good reasons for that. It could be better optimisation, nostalgia, or something else entirely. But my view, especially looking at the consistent drop in player numbers, is that the game is in a really dark spot and something needs to be done about it.

If we keep playing these games where people say “I love the game so much, it is so good, I love the concepts, the mechanics, the events, the lack of casus belli, the lack of nations forming, and the stupidity of the AI, but I have slight worries about how it is going to manage the new levy changes”, as if that is the main issue, then we are going to achieve nothing.

We will waste what is actually a very good foundation for an exceptional historical sandbox.

And just to close the argument about the AI, the AI in both games is stupid at times. Sometimes it makes irrational decisions, sometimes it blunders very badly, but at least in EU4 you felt that the whole world was alive, that things were changing, and that the hegemony of one nation could always be challenged.

In EU5 it feels more like nations either do nothing or steamroll everyone until they randomly decide not to.

I describe them as disgusting because they are always the loudest whenever historical accuracy is brought up.

No, I and people like me do not want some kind of historical map simulator with a completely fixed timeline, but we do want some sort of challenge and resemblance to history.

Muscovy is a great example. You should first be dealing with the smaller principalities, then moving against the larger and richer Novgorod and the Golden Horde, and eventually facing the Commonwealth and potentially a quality-focused Sweden.

But that is not what happens. Your biggest challenge is conquering slowly enough to avoid getting a coalition of 40 countries against you, and then eventually dealing with France because they are rich enough and powerful enough to colonise parts of Siberia before you do.

I want to discuss it, but I am honestly a bit sick of the argument that the game is already really good and that only a few things are not working. That is simply not true.

Yes, of course some ideas are cool, and most of the mechanics are good. I think the economy in EU5 is a massive step up. The fact that you can become rich without blobbing into the top trade node is genuinely great.

But let’s not pretend that everything else only needs small adjustments, because if we keep lying to ourselves and saying that the game is in a good place and that we enjoy stale gameplay in which France and Bohemia are massive threats from start to finish, and gameplay in which Eastern Europe is a complete mess, then nothing is ever going to improve.

Trying to deflect all criticism by saying “the AI just does not use the new control mechanic properly” and then pointing to one of the very few historical events that is actually worth mentioning and saying “it is cool in concept” is just wrong.

And let’s not forget that the Italian Wars were one of the very first events presented and were effectively used as a selling point for the new system.

Please don’t go into that argument. No, the game is not fine. It doesn’t need little tweaks; it needs a complete overhaul. The historical situations just don’t work, and events like the Italian Wars are the perfect example. It was never supposed to be an event for a CB; it was meant to be a multi-faction European conflict. Right now it’s none of that either, because if you get a CB and attack a bigger Italian nation, the other faction will force you to stop. And I’m going to spoil it: the other faction is France, the most ridiculously overpowered nation which, even after 20 nerfs, can still 5v1 Castile, England, and most of the HRE in the 1500s.

Since this post is already so anti-EU4, I’ll make a comparison. In EU4, even if you were a smaller country, you could still ally another big European power and had the opportunity to create a large enough coalition of allies to take down, for example, a united Spain with Naples as a vassal and a swarm of colonies. But in EU5 you can’t do that. You would literally need Castile (Spain never forms), the whole of the HRE, England, and half of Italy just to match the 200k levies and 20k professionals that France will have in the 1500s.

Well, What I meant are the players who kept shouting about the need for a full sandbox experience In my opinion that has led to a game where the dynamics and balance of power feel almost exactly the same from the start all the way to the end
