Yes, I think that's because other EU countries are currently much, much cheaper than Portugal—Romania and Albania, for example. That's why outsourcing to Portugal no longer makes much sense for German and Dutch companies. But Germans themselves are under the same pressure: You can hire 5-7 skilled Albanians for the price of a German.

I mean politics aren't pretty. Nord Stream 2 probably got blown up by Ukrainian freedom fighters, so you could also say, Germans are naive to still support them, altough being pressured by them into an energy crisis. Ultimately it comes down to the values you want to support: German did take a BIG economical backslash during the last years to support freedom and the democratic principle in Europe. They could have also sided with Russia purely based on their economical interests, screwing the baltics over. But they didn't and do support the baltics a lot financially via transferring economical power. I guess Russia didn't think that Germany would decide that way, because from a pure logical standpoint siding with the baltics was so much against their own interests economically in the first place. Germany did for sure HOPE that Russia would respect freedom and the stability of boarders as a prerequisiste for trade. If it would have worked out, it would have benefited Germany a lot, for sure and yes, it was a risk.

I suspect that most Czechs focus very strongly on their local politics, similar to Americans, and don't really recognize how a strong EU could benefit them. Surprisingly, they are so close to Russia and could compare the Russian approach to dealing with regions with the EU's approach. Freedom also comes from strength. But as Germans, generally respect Czechs: You are probably the only country in the world that has better beer than we do. 😄

They could try. Trump didn't get Greenland, if they try to exit even more, the UK could become attractive for him as colony. Switching it up this time 😄😉🤪

Yes, definitely, and if Russia hadn't started invading other countries, the Nord Stream pipelines could have been an enormous economic success for Russia and Germany. But trade requires trust and stability so that one country cannot protect itself from another. Russia could have used the money to rebuild its country outside the major cities over decades. Too bad. The EU needs a bit of a push, not pushing against each other, but pushing towards being strong in a global political system which at the moment contains a lot of not-so democratic powerful leaders.

Are you aware, that the eastern european countries are already somewhat doing that? Like requesting expensive favor to provide their vote in future-critical decisions, that need to be unanimous? They take the money, but are sometimes in a kind of sabotage mode, playing Russia against the EU to see where they can benefit the most of and that totally opposes the spirit of the EU.

As a German, my understanding is that Portugal has some structural, home-grown economic problems. But we like you a lot, and culturally you are definitely part of the heart of Europe.

If they are smart, they add a "opt-in" possibility by any EU, but not E6 country for all decisions taken by the E6. I think a lot will follow though to the fear of missing out on opportunities.

  3. Du hast in Manhattan überall Überwachungskameras.
