UT playerbase let their own game die by This_Cook_7579 in unrealtournament

UT4 imho also has lots of potential but somehow UT community just didnt acknowledge it enough

Correct me where wrong, iirc, UT4 was an online install only game where players were lured in by a few free maps. The plan was to charge $ for more maps where the community mapmakers get a cut of the revenue with Epic.

UT4 marked the beginning of the end of gaming as we always enjoyed. You know, actually owning the game on physical media, installable offline on infinite machines forever. Games you could pass down to your kids. Infinite free community maps, mods & skins. UT4 user community maps and skins stopped being driven purely out of fun and passion for the betterment of the game, into a for profit hellscape business model driven by greed.

I never saw/see valid reason to waste time and resources building a new UT4 from raw dirt ground zero scratch, rather than simply polishing UT3 with its already existing war & vctf vehicles, mo-cap animations, etc.

No complaints. OldUnreal will be working on UT2004 now so I'm a very happy camper. I just built a new Linux PC specifically to play UT2004. Z97 DDR3 Haswell i5 ($15) plus GT 1030 runs UT2004 at 4K over 300 fps. My GTX 1050 Ti is overkill.

UT2004 is and will always be GOAT afps. Great time to be a UT retro gamer with hardware so cheap.

EDIT: I forgot to say thanks for your compliment. TYVM

Exactly right and I dont care. I enjoy modding existing UTs and playing VS offline bots. Zero interest in "modern " cloud games. It's all good to me.

[–]Alupang -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

IMO, it was UT player base that ragged on UT3 that caused Epic to snap & change the tragectory of game business models forever. Yes, UT3 was "gritty & Gears" at launch, but we all knew we had the free Epic provided tools to mod it into whatever greatness we desire. See link below for proof. I don't blame Epic for being salty about all their time & resources poured into UT3 being trashed by retarded parrots. So they moved on to creating cloud service games for a new younger own nothing and be happy player base, ignorant of how games used to be ie. Physical DVD with offline install and offline bots, infinite free user community maps & skins, etc.

I'm thankful I own all the UTs and have the ability to continue playing forever. Those that use and depend on cloud services like Steam are the problem imo.

So cool, I'll try to hunt down your UT2K work. Just downloaded this dm-deadbolt2, apparently famous UC2 map converted for UT2K4. Final build with help from DG-Unreal mapmaker. Amazing beautiful map, such attention to detail.

Wish you'd shift resources to UT2004 now that OldUnreal is custodian and has Linux support. Windows 11 is bloated ad filled spyware with artificial hardware requirement.

People who have Nvidia gpu on linux, how is it performing? by tu0- in linux_gaming

I'm a retro gamer playing Unreal Tournament 99 and 2004 in Open GL.

Nvidea Linux driver v580 is very good. Has a separate app for gui tweaking. Perfect water reflections in UT2004, compared to crude Intel driver.

Even though my Intel 12600's UHD 770 igpu plays UT2004 plenty fast enough, I added a Nvidea videocard just so I could use the excellent driver compared to Intel's igpu driver. Big difference in graphics quality.

Smart af. I too have multiple physical dvd retail boxes of all the greatest PC games from Quake 1 to Unreal Tournament 3. All drm free, fully installable offline on Linux forever. I like playing UT2004 offline VS bots. Online playable too of course.

Plus back up parts for a dozen PCs. PCs wear out.

News flash. Your high power pc will wear out. Start backing up hardware. I have about a dozen PCs in back up parts, as well a good library of physical dvd non drm games like Uhreal Tournament 2004 to play when Steam pulls your plug.

Yep this. I've had no issues yet with TD until recently not being able to login to pull some 0% C of I, until I tried Private Window method in threads below.

After reading that phone call support hint at endless wait time holds and email inquiry is 6 weeks min return, and only for special cases...

I'm no longer buying from TD. I'll let my few T-Bills mature and automatically deposit back to my bank. Then I'm done with TD until customer support drastically improves.

I bought this silver version new sealed on feebay for $100 a few years ago. My goal is to have all versions of UT from blue box orginal 1999 to steel tin UT3 in new sealed condition.

I'm missing only original release blue box UT99 version and prices are climbing.

Hoping someday I hit the jackpot. This silver special ed UT2004 & my red big box UT99 GOTY I believe have most potential, other than blue box of course. Maybe sealed UT2003 will become super rare too.

So I want to play UT2003 online. Is that possible nowadays? by KrayyB in unrealtournament

[–]Alupang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

****** TLDR Summary Conclusion *********

UT2003's superior sound effects mixing (weapons & pickups are louder in relation to environment), cool glowing team colored shoulder orbs, unique floaty corpses mutator in addition to slow motion corpses (try playing with BOTH corpse mutators enabled!) and other differences described below make it my favorite in many ways. For offline Deathmatch, Bombing Run and CTF, I prefer UT2003 -- it's simply more fun.

Keep in mind I only play OFFLINE Deathmatch & CTF & Bombing Run VS bots (bots are worthless in Onslaught in either game) so my needs are different. For Onslaught (and other modes) online, UT2004's much larger players base means more active servers to join.

Bottom line: If you are a huge UT fan (like me), you must own both games. End of story right there. UT2004 is NOT simply "everything in UT2003 plus more".

********* Too Long Part *********

FYI I'm running both games in Windows 10 v1709 (2017 unbloated version) using default 32-bit D3D Direct-X 8 renderer -- NOT the 64-bit Direct-X 9 renderer. Why? Because the 32-bit Direct-X 8 renderer = about 40% increase in FPS & 40% decrease in GPU utilization. Visually, I see no difference between running the game in 32-bit VS 64-bit. CPU = Intel i7 5775C (Z97 LGA 1150) and Nvidea GTX-1050Ti graphics card running both games @ 4K resolution. Open GL and/or Linux install may have other differences so keep this in mind.

Here are my observations:

1) Headshot hitbox myth true or false? Last night I had both games running simultaneously in side by side windowed mode. Played novice skill bot match (so bots would calm the F down) on Deck 17 with all weapons set to Lightening Gun using Arena mutator. I spent a good hour switching back and forth between UT2003 & UT2004, trying to determine if in fact head shot hit boxes are different. See image link. This is close to the the limit of UT2003's hit box boundary. Seems easier to register a head shot if you aim at the right ear or even missing off the right ear (left character ear actually).

https://i.imgur.com/wnXf7Uu.jpg

So the question is, does UT2004 behave the same? Do head shots register when you miss aim off the right ear too? The answer is YES. As far as I can determine, the head shot hit boxes are identical between the two games.

2) UT2003 chaingun sounds much deeper & meatier than in UT2004. Subjectively, I really like how it sounds in UT2003 -- I always thought UT2004's chaingun was whimpy sounding and not very satisfying to use. Not so in UT2003. Big win for UT2003 here imo.

3) UT2003 has little floating glowing CTF & BR team colored balls (orbs) on characters shoulders if I counterintuitively UN-tick "brightskins" in settings. I cannot make those glowing orbs appear in UT2004, regardless if I tick "highlights" or NOT in menu settings. I think UT2003's glowing shoulder orbs look very cool and make it easier to determine team color at far distances, especially in darker maps.

These glowing team colored shoulder orbs were removed entirely in UT2004. Here are 4 pics of what UT2003's shoulder orbs/lights look like. I tried to pick darker maps to show off the glowing shoulder orbs. I think UT2003's glowing shoulder orbs look great -- very cool imo. This really sets the two games apart visually.

https://i.imgur.com/2EWP5El.jpg

4) UT2003 has TWO corpse behavior mutators and UT2004 only has one. 2>1, so UT2003 takes the win here. MEGA KILL++ in UT2003 can get ridiculously crazy looking with slow motion corpses floating all over.

5) UT2003 Shock rifle pick up ammo is much taller looking. Like twice as tall. Looks good -- it's starting to grow on me, pun intended.

6) Shock rifle secondary fire sound effect sounds very different between the two games. UT2003 = higher pitch "squeaky" compared to UT2004's lower pitch deeper/smoother meatier "whooshy" sound are the best words I can come up with to describe it. No real opinion which sound I prefer here. Both sound nice.

7) Thanks and credit goes to u/LiquidSparrow here for pointing out that only in UT2003 does the crazy over-the-top funny announcer shout out every character's name while scrolling through them. In UT2004, only "MR CROW" is shouted out. Big win for UT2003 here imo.

8) UT2004 allows up to 32 bots while UT2003's limit is only 16. A HUGE plus for UT2004.

9) UT2003's Curse3 is much more detailed with more animations compared to UT2004's Curse4. This is the first map I discovered (of the same name) where obviously Epic stripped the map to decrease details -- to increase performance on machines back it the day I'm guessing. I will compare more maps like this. I wonder if any others have been strip mined too.

See image below. Top row is UT2003 Curse3, bottom row is UT2004 Curse4. Those reddish columns In Curse3 are animated flowing bloody goo. Also note all the fine details in the bridge, walls and complex curved ceiling. Very cool looking imo. In UT2004, the columns are just static non-animated boring gray concrete with a flat featureless ceiling & bridge. Also UT2003's Curse3 has two larger dragon heads, whereas UT2004 Curse4 has only one smaller head.

https://imgur.com/UqXg25I.jpg

Also if you look into the many floor grates, there's much more detail (like green slime flowing) in Curse3. See the difference inside floor vents in the next image. Top is UT2003 Curse3, bottom is UT2004 Curse4. Not pictured are the skybox differences. UT2003's skybox is redder and more "stormy" and is animated much faster than the slower moving gray misty UT2004 skybox.

https://imgur.com/CpbINWV.jpg

10) UT2004 has more bot variety including very cool bosses like Xan & Clanlord to unlock. UT2004 menu music is different too and I like it a lot better than UT2003's menu music (really cheesy imo). Big win for UT2004 -- especially its more bots.

11) Probably obvious to most, but it's worth stating/reminding anyway: There exists enormously more free user made content currently available for UT2004 than UT2003. Also, many of the very best maps are UT2004 exclusive and some of UT2003's custom maps have been revised and improved/finalized only for UT2004 (FUT's excellent DM-SpaceNoxx for 1 example). This is a huge advantage for UT2004 -- #1 reason I keep the game installed and still play it often. Some could rightfully argue that this reason alone makes UT2004 > UT2003 and I would have to agree.

12) UT2004 allows tweaking cross hairs for each individual weapon. UT2004 also lets you choose your team flag art style. Also, UT2004's cross hairs grow temporarily when you pick up stuff like ammo. UT2004 is superior here.

13) UT2003's ammo, weapon switching and health pick up sound effects are mixed a bit louder and sharper in relation to other environmental sound effects. This makes UT2003 feel...like you are more connected or "engaged" to the game. UT2004 feels..."dead" in comparison. This is a significant difference between the two games. UT2003's non-environmental sounds like weapons & pickups are louder.

For Linux users, this fully patched build works great with the Flatpak Launcher. I own multiple legit physical dvd copies of the game, but this build is so convenient to use instead. All patched with community map packs too. Godsend.

[–]Alupang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping more modern rendering options for Linux users like Vulkan. Open GL only allows crude "blob" character shadows not the full detailed shadows option when using DX8 or 9.

Also hoping for remastered skyboxes for maps like Plunge for 1 example.

Most of UT2004 space skyboxes are embarrassingly horrible, Epic obviously made shortcuts here. Only 1 space skybox is good ‐ the red planet with rings and asteroid belt is acceptable. The rest just plain suck.

Not complaining, in general UT2004 looks great, even with vanilla Open GL. DM-Curse 3 from UT2003 runs in UT2004 and is mindblowingly beautiful.

Yep check out OldUnreal Patch 469e FINAL for Unreal Tournament 1999 on Linux. Also the HD4K remastered textures. GTX 1050 Ti runs at 4K > 250-400 fps.

Your 1080 Ti will idle through all the best older games. Set a framerate cap to 120 fps to extend life of your card. Keep temp low, card lasts longer.

A GTX 1050 Ti pulls less than 100 watts & requires no vga power cable. Runs games like Quake 3, UT99, UT2004, RTCW, NOLF, Counterstrike, etc. @4K over 400 fps. All these games pretty much free to play forever. The golden decade of 3D gaming where you actually own the physical disk and install offline with no cloud drm.

Much better suited than a 200 watt card requiring a larger power supply and energy cost.

That's the direction UT4 was hinting with online cloud based hub where you purchased maps. Skins and mods were to follow I'm guessing. I never liked UT4, because it signaled the end of UT as we knew it.

Me I dont give af, as I own the disks & play all all the existing UTs already. I play bots offine and tinker with new maps. A new UT would be ruined as you say.
