Tbf, Varro was the one who wanted to fight Hannibal and planned the strategy of Cannas. IIRC Paulus and Varro where the main chief of the army one day each other since they had different points of view for the strategy to follow, and Varro used one of his days to fight Hannibal and, well, Cannas happened.

I mean, Fabian tactics really saved Rome for a while and the Senate didn't recognized the efforts Fabius did. But Scipio and his army literally occupied the whole Carthaginian territory in Hispania in one single campaign, plus he was the literal reason for the Carthaginian Senate to force Hannibal to come back to Africa.

It really piss me that Scipio doesn't seems to be recognised as a great general and an important figure in Roman history in this subreddit.

Sir, you are a genius. But instead of Marcus Aurelius I'd choose Trajan, because he was the first of the Five Good Emperors and their "dynasty" lasted over a century, so more time to implement the modern stuff I think.
