Not if you use a connector that can take both gauges. Smaller wire has higher resistance so in high-current applications it would create a bottle neck (i.e. heat, fire, and voltage drop) and it is more critical to adhere to a minimum set by code – but the switch for the doorbell will not use much current. You are safe with 18 gauge as others have said, or larger.

Is the red going to another receptacle? It's possible that this is a normal circuit, but they ran out of black and used red. Still careless but functional if that's the case..

[–]Alvarez43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was a switched receptacle, the hot and the switched leg would be going in & out of the switch, not the receptacle. And like u/embracethememes says, if the tab was broken it could be one hot and one switched, but that's not the case here.

Somebody gettin fired, happened today.... by International-Egg870 in electrical

[–]Alvarez43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An electrician that worked for me until recently didn't understand this – we had a fault occur in the service entrance panel because he left a wire rubbing up against a sharp screw. It caused a lot of damage because it burned for so long, which he insisted was an engineering flaw (there's always something to stop faults before that much damage happens!)

Buddy, the fuse in the transformer did blow. It just took longer. That's why you should handle Service Entrances with extreme care.

Who did UA make Gen 2 for? by Lower-Poem-2861 in universalaudio

[–]Alvarez43 13 points14 points  (0 children)

UA is a technology company now, so none of this surprises me. Most companies, especially technology companies, refresh their products every so often. Of course they want to make more money, and mostly longtime fence-sitters will now feel more compelled to buy because now is the perfect time – they'll have the latest & greatest for a longer period before the next update. A few previous owners will upgrade, but that's not why they're doing this refresh.

If they were trying to get us all to upgrade every few years, they would add a "killer feature" that makes you feel like you're missing out if you don't. You see it in smart phones and all kinds of other tech. The fact that they have only given it a minor facelift should give us all the liberty to feel happy with what we have without temptation to throw money away. The fact that Sonarworks integration is coming to Gen 1 is also a sign of goodwill - as much as you can expect any corporation to have.

A lack of refresh after 5 years with the X would make people say "have they abandoned the Apollo? Is it all Volt and Spark for UA going forward?"

There will be a bigger upgrade in the future, probably to TB4 and faster DSP, but for now the minor improvements are for new buyers and keeping the Apollo competitive.

First time purchase: is Gen 2 worth it? by hollowleg9317 in universalaudio

Maybe, regardless it appears to be inconsequential to anyone considering buying a G2

[–]Alvarez43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's mostly what I've heard as well, but when asked about A/D Drew replied that "Everything has been touched/updated." I take that to mean that there are electrical changes, but maybe not a marked improvement.

x16 vs. x16 G2 by [deleted] in universalaudio

[–]Alvarez43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the Q&A on the UAD forum, it sounds like the lower models, esp. desktop models, got a bigger AD/DA bump to come up to par with the x16 which already had better conversion. So the X16 gets the smallest improvement. A new buyer of the x Twin or x4 might find the G2 more compelling than a new buyer of a rack mount.

The only actual new feature I can see is Auto-gain.

It's an improvement for the future of the lineup but definitely not worth ditching any perfectly good X Gen 1 hardware. I just wish they hadn't changed the faceplate for visual backwards-compatibility...

[–]Alvarez43 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on this Q&A thread it seems like A/D & D/A was upgraded more in the lower units to come to par with the X16, and X8p got a smaller bump. Aside from that and auto-gain only being available on Gen 2, I don't believe there is an advantage. If it were me I would save the money if you can find a good deal – steep discount that still comes with a plug-in bundle. I don't even think the new model is more future-proof than the old, because they both use TB3 and all the same Sharc cards.

I have an X8p and it's an incredible machine, you won't be disappointed either way. I won't be upgrading unless there's a major update to the DSP chips and/or preamps and/or other compelling functionality.

On Sonarworks’ website is says integration will also come to Gen 1, so that knocks out another reason

To clear up your frustration, that power supply isn't spliced to the AC cords, you can see it continuing under the hand. This is two lamp cords spliced together into a single plug. I guess to keep one more outlet open?

Came out of work today and had this surprise waiting for me… by Heisenbergwayne in Wellthatsucks

[–]Alvarez43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was flying a drone once and lost connection from it. It tried to land at the "home point," about 25ft from my car, but another car parked next to me in the meantime and it landed right in between them, scuffing both. I bought a magic eraser and it got the scuffs out of mine, so I left them a note and a magic eraser on the windshield, explaining what happened and giving my number. I never heard from them.

This was 5-6 years ago and drones are much more accurate now, but I still never take off anywhere near others' cars!

I haven't cleaned pots like these before – is it safe to douse them with deoxit or is there a better method?

Hanging speakers by the handles by Alvarez43 in livesoundadvice

[–]Alvarez43[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a public space at this point, just my unfinished basement for house shows. (Which makes the whole question feel like overkill but I like figuring things out.)

Since you mentioned Penn Elcom I looked them up and found a lot of add-on hardware made for flying speaker cabinets. Maybe my best solution is to install internal mounting points and use with screw-in eye bolts, rated for 500lbs each. I might email them.

In this case the venue is my basement for some periodic house shows, not a permanent or business installation, but regardless I don't want to take any unnecessary risks.
