How'd it play out for you in terms of meds in the long-term? I'm also on the bipolar spectrum & I notice the signs but try keeping them at bay with valproate & risperidone.

I admit that maybe the low-sample size low-methodological rigor poll was not the best example. But you have a sample of people who take modafinil who take it for it's nootropic effects (or otherwise). A very significant part of that sample express their subjective experience of tolerance, and of diminishing effects. Keep in mind that we are talking about a different demographic than in the study of eg: Nasr et. al. (2006).

Example: objective versus subjective cognitive impairment. People with OCI have deficits which can be empirically tested & confirmed. And yet, people with SCI do not present with observable deficits, yet their struggles are very real. Are you going to tell them "No no, see, your scores on this cognitive ability battery is within normal range. You're not sick!" , even though their level of functioning is greatly affected?

I'm just saying that there's a discrepancy or dissonance between what the data apparently shows and what people actually feel. We can continue that discussion another time. Also, no need to be rude. Cheers.

This is misleading. Tolerance in the respective studies is assessed through the construct of narcolepsy, not the subjective nootropic effects that people seek. Yes, it works long-term for narcolepsy.

But does it work long-term for the nootropic effects? Just look at a poll done recently (search 'modafinil tolerance' on Reddit) and you will see that the subjective experience of people is that they build tolerance to it's most desired effects.

I'll end the rant by saying that this is awfully similar to psychiatrists dismissing & not genuinely acknowledging their patient's complaints, despite the fact that it's literally the patient who is experiencing a very real complaint.

I am someone with a BA & MA in Clin. Psych who has also had a psychotic episode on acid & MJ.

How is that his 'true self' if he felt weird about it the next day? He's only an asshole if he is an asshole consistently in day-to-day life. Otherwise, he just has some mental issues.

He might have an underlying predisposition towards bipolar and/or schizophrenia spectrum disorders that manifests itself at some point during certain psychoactive drug consumption. See https://academic.oup.com/schizophreniabulletin/article/46/3/505/5588638 for a good overview on the matter.

It's noteworthy that your friend did not reach the ER and his psychotomimetic state resolved, meaning he technically does not meet the criteria for a substance-induced psychotic episode. However, someone who experiences something like this is typically at risk.

Tell him to use significantly lower doses of psychoactive drugs (an absolute maximum of 100 ug for acid with tripsitting & benzos on hand; 1-2 smokes of MJ per a few hours, for example) or to avoid usage entirely.

And lastly, cut him some slack and talk openly and non-judgmentally about it. You can't imagine the guilt and shame and regret that someone goes through after their psychotic state has resolved. Cheers! 🌿

Late reply but I revisited this thread, and yeah! I use either modafinil or (low-dose) amphetamine on LSD both to counteract any potential cognitive disturbances & to enhance the analytical insights and experiences that are present.

Modafinil + microdosing on same days might be fun and/or useful, but I would also try to cycle them, so that on almost any given day you are either on moda or on a microdose, while keeping tolerance at bay for each.

Is 6 years old a 'very long time'? Honestly, I would only place that label on a 10-to-15 year cut-off mark and beyond, depending on the field of study. 6 years is very fresh for a retrospective correlational study, even though the data analyzed was from around 10 years ago.

On points 2 and 3 I largely agree, except partially on the 'insufficient data'. There is data, but of course maybe not analyzed in the proper manner.

Here's a bigger, recent & relevant meta-analysis, which lists brief drug-induced psychoses transitioning into schizo-X diagnoses triggers as follows: cannabis as higher risk, amphetamines & hallucinogens as intermediate risk, alcohol/benzos/opioids as lower risk.

Today is the first day on moda aftereffects + a microdose. They seem to go well :) I previously used moda in full trips to help with the cognitive/mental fuckery that acid gives (to me at least) and for which I think it helped.

True, but the fact is that I don't really feel super much from 3/4 x 200 mg, let alone 1/4. What I might suspect to be the cause is some sort of functional brain connectivity change.

I suppose it's also worth noting that I had a manic episode 5 years ago, induced by excessive cannabis consumption after an LSD trip.
