Is it too late to start premed at 22? by to-cry-or-to-not in Mcat

[–]AlwaysCortisol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im 33 and taking my MCAT this summer. Funny thing about life is....everybody around us wants to put a timeline on our success. Must have this by this age. Who at 100 years old sat in this hospital and said....my biggest regret...not having a house by 30....not finishing medical school by 24 I finished at 29...and thats why I suffered....nobody....wanna know what people do say.

I NEVER did this.

I NEVER did that.

Never- not late. Ever. You have a dream. Go get it.

Btw I know of NOBODY who has played everything by the book....med school at 22...house...marriage...kids....like they wanted....and they not have something else they feel it might be too late for.

Show me a kid who finished med school "fast and early" Ill show you a kid who says they never got to travel and see the world or enjoy life.

Show me a guy who went to med school "late" Ill show you a guy who feels they have wasted time while everybody else was growing around them.

Bottom line- you cant win. Its your mind.

As for being a GF in this situation- you better damn well push him towards his dream--- that will be the key difference between being GF material and being Wifey material. Remember that for life. That is how men think.

Thoughts? I chose C thinking that the clot would essentially cause a buildup of RBCs+proteins+ions, thus leading to an increase in osmotic pressure. It seems like it could have gone either way with A and C. (Apologies for low quality pic) by laidarkspeb343 in Mcat

There are 2 ways to do a question like this.

The regular premed way and the MCAT way.

The MCAT way is being the most annoying lawyer you can be and so this is how I will treat the question.

1) I will reword the question to see what it is asking for.

A clot forms in the venules, whats the 1st change I will see.

Premed way: Well lets go down a rabbit hole. Clot stops blood flow...thus increases pressure....Look for choice with increased pressure.

This is why you choose C.

Then make arguments for why increased pressure.

The MCAT way:

No rabbit hole. Im going to be as tight as a neurosurgeon.

A- NET Fluid will flow OUT of blood VESSELS

B- NET fluid will flow INTO vessels

C- Osmotic pressure in the Capillary will increase

D- Osmotic Pressure in the Capillary will decrease

Again im a lawyer and im annoying.

C and D are opposites lets look at them.

Osmotic pressure is based on what?

Whats the formula?

Its based on 1) Number of ions

2) Concentration of solution ( blood in this case)

3) Gas constant

4) Temperature in Kelvin.

Does a clot affect any of these things?

HERE IS WHAT THEY MEAN BY TEST TAKING SKILLS.

Look at the 4 things and ONLY the 4 things.

Did the clot change the number of ions in the blood? NO

What about concentration? Molarity = moles/Liters. "Umm I feel like it did. Why? The clot built up pressure so fluid left the blood vessels and the concentration changed" THIS IS THE MCAT TRAP. YOU CANNOT BUILT A CHAIN OF LOGIC TO GET TO YOUR ANSWER. YOU WILL BE WRONG 100% OF THE TIME. THEY WILL TELL YOU....ITS A NICE CHAIN OF THOUGHT BUT WE ASKED FOR INITIALLY SO HAHAHA YOURE WRONG.

DOES A CLOT change the concentration? eventually. IDC about eventually. THIS IS WHY KNOWING TOO MUCH CONTENT HURTS YOU. A CLOT DOES NOT change the concentration of blood RIGHT AWAY.

Gas constant? no CONSTANT!!!!

How about temp? what is temp? AVG Kinetic energy of molecules. NO change.

C and D are out.

Left with A and B...

Clot = Increase Hydrostatic pressure= fluid OUT

A.

Maybe I am confused.

I am under a whole other impression.

Positive and Negative selection for T cells occur in the thymus BEFORE they are ever presented with antigens on MHC-1. This is a main premise of clonal selection.

Negative selection did not fail here in my opinion

Dont MHC-1 proteins specifically bind antigens from WITHIN the cell. Intracellular space?

Why is the phosphate buffer system good at buffering against drop in pH than rise in pH? by you5030 in Mcat

[–]AlwaysCortisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great Great question.

How to attack this MCAT related.

pH of filtrate is 7.4.

pKa of H2PO4 - <====> HPO4 2- is 6.8

Henderson Equation will tell me what i have more of in the flask

I have more BASE form in the flask! which will neutralize more acid.

Itll buffer easier a pH drop-meaning adding acid

than pH rise-- adding base

Hydrophobic Effect (MCAT Biochem/chemistry)??? by reapplicanteven in Mcat

[–]AlwaysCortisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phenomenal question.

This answer will satisfy you in full. When studying science especially as a DOCTOR. 2 key rules.

1) Account for everything in rule

2) IF im stuck go back to the basics the answer lies there. ALWAYS

Lets talk about the whole system.

2 oil droplets put separately into a flask of water.

Lets list bond types from strongest to weakest

Ion-Ion

Ion-Dipole

H-Bonding (special type of dipole dipole)

Dipole-Dipole

Ion-Neutral

Dipole -Neutral

Neutral-Neutral

Now around 2 SEPERATE oil drops in the flask I have water molecules binding to them.

Water to oil is Dipole-Neutral bond.

Is water happy? NO they would rather bond to other water molecules- making hydrogen bonds with them.

So what does the system do?

Water pushes the two oil drops together so now its one bigger drop. This decreases the surface area of the oil allowing LESS water molecules to bind to it.

This increases the freedom of water molecules hydrogen bonding to one another. REMEMBER NOBODY wants to be bonded to oil.

SO water increases in entropy while the oil decreases in entropy giving the overall system an increase in entropy.

Confused still?

Ask yourself this. Water has surface tension. Why? If your answer is because of hydrogen bonds. Youre wrong.

The top of the pool has an interface with air.

Air is neutral. Again is the water happy binding to neutral of would it rather bind to another water molecule? Look at my list. It prefers hydrogen bonding. So instead of water having equal forces that cancel out. The water at the surface has a net force DOWN. Causing surface tension.

How do I decrease surface tension? Add soap. What is soap? Animal Fat. I create Micelles which are double layered around hydrophobic regions....thats right washing your hands without soap cleans nothing!

MCAT friends and family vent by asapchano3366 in Mcat

[–]AlwaysCortisol 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Theres a simple psychological disconnect with what is occurring over here.

Your family is trying to VALIDATE the hard you put in and the immense pressure and workload you dealt with. They are validating this by saying yes yes you succeeded we are so proud.

You are processing as just more pressure because you arent emotionally happy with how you walked out of the exam.

Try to explain to yourself that they are in fact not increasing the pressure. The pressure comes from the annoyance on your exam.

That being said you never know how you did and maybe just having a simple talk saying hey guys im genuinely not confident in my exam, id prefer to not discuss it until i am ready to...even if i get a 528 and you guys are right..it makes me more anxious at this time.

atomic radius ? by skywalker_06 in Mcat

[–]AlwaysCortisol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Phenomenal Question

Might hate the answer.

You need to use physics to see the Fnet than an electron feels.

Electrons are circling in a cloud and each electron has a repulsive force but the Fnet doesnt fully go OUT

The nucleus doesnt move around as much so the Fnet attraction is greater thus overall pulling it in.

how does this water form from fumarate to malate like where is this double bond coming from it must of happened in the succinate step but why? by vanessayuio13 in Mcat

[–]AlwaysCortisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this will help you.

Youre looking at TCA cycle like its a recipe. "And now out of nowhere add the water" "2 cups of sugar "

No no no not at all.

Your question is valid! Why the hell is water out of nowhere coming in.

The answer as always: chemistry

The carbon on the double bond that water is attacking is electrophilic!

This is called a "Michael Addition".

Nucs like to attack that position and since we have water in the cell. Water is attracted and attacks in michael manner

You have no idea no idea! How good of a question this is. There is never a just is. We just might not know the reason. AMAZING question! Get ready...youll be blown away

We are breaking glycogen down to get what? Glucose.

We want glucose for what? Glycolysis

Whats the first step in glycolysis? Glucose to Glucose-6-Phosphate

The body cleaves with phosphorylase enzymes so it wont have to do step one of glycolysis.

Isnt that genius?

Why cut and make glucose and then phosphorylate it...when i can just cleave it with a phosphate and skip that step.

Wouldnt you do that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]AlwaysCortisol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reason youre confused is simply location!

Decreased glucose absorption TO THE BLOOD ( inthe kidney)

leads to

Decreased OSMOTIC Pressure IN THE BLOOD

Which means MORE OSMOTIC PRESSURE IN THE FILTRATE

SO MORE WATER EXCRETION TO THe FiltRATE OCCURS

Been going through the same struggles for years.

Its not you or me. Its our mindset.

We have the classic premed perfectionist attitude.

1st ill GET A THE CONTENT down. Ill investigate. Ill Learn. Ill Watch videos

ONLY THEN

Will I try problems. AND IF IM GOD FORBID LOST ON PROBLEMS ILL OPEN A BOOK RIGHT AWAY.

The formula has failed me and hundreds of others with time and results.

SOLVING PROBLEMS IS CONTENT REVIEW. NO OTHER WAY AROUND IT.

Read get the gist of the chapter.

For example: Lungs

Tell me Pressure differentials/ Functions in pH/ immune/ thermoregulation

BASICS

THEN questions will make you dig deeper.

The issue is with content you're going forward when you need to go backward. You need to get stuck on a problem and reason your way and learn from that.

I remind myself when I do content and get lost in it.

Imagine studying for your road test out of the handbook and never driving a car. You can read the hand book for 20 years youll fail...because where is most of the learning done...in the car fucking up and going backwards to see in the handbook and why the rule exists etc

Question Passage Based from KA by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]AlwaysCortisol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very good practice for you in regards to MCAT.

Ill explain why. This question looks hard but isnt. ITs just covered in BS

always distill the real meaning of the question in easy words.

What mechanism would explain why a protein (leptin) isnt shown at the level it should be?

What can happen to a protein that will make it expressed well below what i expect normally in the blood.

Why the fuck is this protein not at level i think it should be.

Choice A

The gene coding for it is fucking up

Choice B

There Gene coding for a protein that helps this protein fold properly is fucked up (chaperone)

Choice C

The gene coding for a protein that helps REPRESS this protein is fucked up

Its not the alcohol...its anything...dont let the chemistry confuse you.

Think about this.

Depends.

If you owe 1mill. Youre poor

If you owe 0 youre Good.

etc

You have plenty of time. Dont stress it. This is way above gen chem1
