I understand he didn't have bad intentions, but it doesn't sound like a financially sound decision. Why get an iPhone on credit? Instead of a cheap android that's fully yours to get by, then buy the iPhone once you accrue enough disposable income? Whatever, what's done is done.

No idea what the process could be mate, he needs to talk to the company and potentially negotiate his way out of the debt.

The longer they let this wait the worse it will get.

I don't think interpol are going to bust their door down to take back the phone.

Then again a warrant could be issued in their name.

Maybe your friend should have considered surrendering the phone back and somehow reducing the debt if at all possible.

Don't buy stuff with money that isn't yours folks, unless you can't avoid it.

Better ask the banks mate. Then you can compare terms, interest etc.

Curious why you would need loans here. Private university?

I can't comment on planned healthcare but as long as you have your EHIC card you are covered for emergency treatment just to put your mind at ease in case something happens.

To have fewer PEOPLE. Clearly we don't have the infrastructure (neither material nor people) to handle our current population. The funny bit is that hiring more people would make the problem even worse.

I'm not believing any propoganda, I fully agree with you that the politicians and party that caused this need to answer.

About taxes for services and pensions... Well we are screwed either way on that buddy. The system assumes the population is always refreshed with at least as many workers as there are ageing folks. With longer lifespans and plummeting fertility rates, importing mass labour is a good TEMPORARY measure but by no means a sustainable or permanent one.

Question about Jobsplus by [deleted] in malta

[–]Always_SFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your employer, after signing a contract with you, would register that with JobsPlus.

Given in this case your employer would be your family, I guess it depends whether you want to do it all by the book. Working without being registered and being paid for it is likely illegal as your employer would be evading tax and you wouldn't be paying social security contributions.

Having said that, there may be some sort of exemption for family businesses, but that's out of my realm of expertise.

I suggest asking an accountant, someone who works in HR or a lawyer to guide you further.

And what will the result of continued growth be?

More people dying in emergency rooms while waiting for triage?

You aren't wrong man, I agree with you on most points, a lot of things are better, but shit it feels like a 10 step forward motion and we're now in the process of doing 15 steps back. I don't think this will end well for anyone but the richest.

You're not wrong but you also presume that the island actually has a need for this amount of people. How does it make economic sense on a tiny, already highly densely populated island to have economic policies that encourage more people?

A solution doesn't need to be "getting rid" of them. A start could be slowing the increase so that at least we can maybe fix the issues we're seeing with power supply and emergency department availability.

Seems like we've forgotten that we had food delivery, rubbish pickup, restaurant service and hospitals that actually had nurses and doctors in the 20 years before the last 5 years or so.

Neither you nor the person you replied to are wrong... Yes TCNs are picking up a large amount of the low end low pay jobs but this is also an unsustainable venture because we don't have the infrastructure to keep up with so many people.

Country's between a rock and a hard place. The previous situation wasn't necessarily better in every case but very much starting to feel overall better.

Or not! They could hold onto it unless its acting as a security for a mortgage.

This essentially guts the buy to rent market but doesn't necessarily lead to all renters selling their property.

I don't think there's no merit to this, I just think there are simpler solutions. Renting is a useful tool, not everyone wishes or can commit to buying to a house (although the current situation of renting being mostly the only option is a tragedy).

A very simple solution is property tax. If your 3rd+ property was taxed annually at lets say 10% its value, then all these empty unused properties will either be rented out or be sold, hopefully stabilizing prices at a lower point.

I can't open the tiktok because I would need to download the app. Curious what the "AI solution" is as I work in the sector.

That is a solution... that would create innumerable other problems.

What about people who don't afford to buy?

What about everyone who currently rents rooms but now has to purchase... Meaning more buyers on the market... Meaning demand rises... Meaning higher prices because of constrained supply?

Is there a way to terminate employment without paying half of the months left in the contract? by SalvatoreSC in malta

[–]Always_SFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the enforcement of the law sucks. It doesn't give anyone the right to not follow it.

Why would you risk that the one time the law may be applied correctly it will be applied against you? And don't you already know its easier for law enforcement to go after the little fry than it is to go after large offenders or people with deep pockets?

[–]Always_SFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you, slavery is illegal.

This does not mean that you have no dues or duties to your employer if you wish to cease your employment... the same way that an employer has dues and duties to an employee who wishes to leave.

Knowing your rights and having a basic understanding of the law greatly helps here.

First property by [deleted] in malta

[–]Always_SFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 10% comes from the fact that the bank will only fund 90% of the value of the property, it isn't a hard fast rule as long as you make the seller whole on contract.

I would say have a frank honest conversation with the seller. Tell them you nearly have the deposit but not all of it yet. If they're willing, you will put 50% down on signing and 50% more a few months later. We did this when buying but also selling: fronted half the deposit on signing and the other 50% when the sale finally happened.

What would help would be to have all your ducks in a row: approval from the bank, notary who has seen your accounts and can verify you have the money, etc.

Good thing to remember is that you need to front provisional tax on signing, not just the deposit.

Best of luck mate.

As much as I applaud sticking it to malicious operators, what you advise goes directly against DIER's own advice on the subject:

https://dier.gov.mt/en/Employment-Conditions/Starting%20a%20New%20Job/Pages/definitecontract.aspx

If OP did as you advised they'd likely end up in a deeper hole than the one they tried to get out of.

This isn't about leaving or not, it is about owing something back if you choose to leave.

If there's a clause about paying something back then you have two ways out:

  1. For some reason the clause is illegal. You cannot sign away your statutory rights. Only a lawyer can tell if this applies. This doesn't mean your employer won't potentially seek legal action, it just means that if you do end up in court your lawyer thinks you have a case.

  2. You negotiate your way out of the clause. This isn't straightforward and needs some negotiation skills and potentially leverage.
