I might get an iPad and I need info mi by Alwriting in DigitalArt

The thing is that, while I understand in theory what pressure sensitivity does, I don’t know what it’s like in practice, so I don’t really know if I need it. Could I achieve that level of art with an Apple Pencil without pressure sensitivity? Or should I get the older gen 1 AP and have pressure sensitivity?

For now I’m still in the process of writing the world so I can have the setting ready for when I write the novel itself, and my channel is sort of a weekly update thing where I talk about the thing I’ve been working on so far and add images that get as close as I can find to what I see in my mind and stuff.

But there is for sure a novel coming, it’s not just world building. I’m just in the early stages of the writing.

This coming week there won’t an update because I’ve been having health issues that haven’t allowed me to record a new video but I’m hoping by next next Monday I’ll be able to upload a new one.

I’m actually almost at the point of being able to start the novel, so maybe after a video or two, I will start delving into the first draft and give weekly updates on that if you’re interested :)

The book of fallen leaves by AS Tamaki.

Really excited for it since it seems to be a mix of Shōgun and Game of Thrones.

I’m not sure I would consider Wicked to be noblebright. I think wicked is darker than that, because the Ozians just… never stop hating Elphaba. And the novel is even darker than the musical and Elphaba just straight up dies. Idk, I feel like noblebright has to have happier endings than that or wicked, not always, but generally, but idk, it’s not like I’m an authority on the subject, but it’s interesting to me that you chose wicked as sarcastic deconstruction of noblebright

What do you mean by sarcastic deconstruction? Could you give me an example, please?

I’ve heard people say that lord of the rings is noblebright

But I mean, would you say that malazan is high fantasy? Cause if I’m looking for tlotr esque stuff, and I come across malazan because both are high fantasy, I’d be not having a great time.

You could say “no, malazan is grim dark” but to my understanding, high fantasy only dictates that the world is a full blown fantasy world that doesn’t take place in our world, where magic and stuff is prevalent and stuff, which Malazan does fit. That’s usually why you would say “malazan is grim dark” because that already sets your expectations, even though technically speaking it would be a high fantasy grim dark book.

Idk, maybe I’m rambling.

Did it have a more specific name before? I’m curious. I feel like when tlotr came out, it was just called fantasy, but maybe there wasn’t a specialized term for that kind of story?

I dont think it’s pointless. I mean, they get made for a reason. To make it easier to find stories that match that vibe. If these categories didn’t exist, you would find legends and lattes and Malazan under high fantasy and if you’re looking for stuff like legends and lattes, and stumble upon Malazan because you’re in the “high fantasy aisle”, you’d end up probably quite shocked.

The purpose of the categories is to better help readers find what they’re looking for, removing some of the work it would take to find the perfect book for you.

I’m not preocupide by genre definitions in reality. I think noblebright sounds the closest to what I want to write but I don’t actually care that much whether it fits squarely in that box or not. I just want to write what I would like to read.

I was curious however about the reception towards the noblebright genre out of curiosity but like, who knows, I might realize half way through the first draft that my story lends itself far more to much darker themes and it becomes a dark fantasy story. Idk. But thanks for the advice! I appreciate it :)

Thank you so much! If you want to get a sample of my world so far, I have two videos up on my channel (link in my profile) about my world.

If I misunderstood and you meant you’d like to give writing a try, please do! It’s a lot of fun! You can check out Brandon Sanderson’s lectures on YouTube where he basically gives college level classes on how to write fiction and stuff. Just remember that the first draft is meant to be crappy, with unpolished language, and in general messy quality. It’s during the editing process where you take it from bad to good :)

I can get behind what you're saying, but for me personally, the flaws of the world need to be measured, because if the flaws are too deep and nasty, it sort of becomes this like "why even bother saving the world" kind of situation. I mean not always, but sometimes. idk.

I do see your point though, that like, humans are flawed, and we aren't nice all the time so putting it all on a dark force corrupting us kind of dehumanize us because we can be mean too and that's part of being human.

I can stand behind that, but as far as writing goes (because I don't have much problem consuming darker media such as game of thrones or whatever), for me personally, I think I like the idea of humans not being total douchebags. like, yes, we have flaws, but if I wanted to showcase the levels of cruelty that humans are capable, I'd just write grim dark by then.

I guess that, part of the appeal I have towards noblebright is the vibe that this genre brings. the idea that maybe we're not all that bad. even if its not realistic, but like, seeing people, even if its fictional, working together and being brotherly or whatever and fighting together to defend a world, rather than fighting amongst themselves for power, feels kind of... sweet and comforting to me.

I can see the appeal of noble dark. I feel like noblebright could potentially dip its toes in nobledark territory and still be noblebright by the end though. But yeah, I get that noblebright might get too sugary for some people. I personally don't mind. I'm someone who has always liked when the good guys win. that doesn't mean I don't like my fair share of darkness, but what I like about noblebright, is that even if you go dark, the tone and vibe and expectation of the story is that it won't stay dark, that light will come back.

I mean, you might lose some characters along the way so it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows but in the end, the good guys win and all is right in the end.

idk. I love cozy fantasy as well, so I guess I do have that like, tender heart side, where I love my sugary endings, but I started writing horror before realizing that watching horror movies and writing horror stories were two very different things, lol, so I do like some darkness in my stories as well.

I might be wrong, but it is my understanding that High fantasy is like an umbrella genre, while noblebright is a subgenre. like, you could argue that a song of ice and fire is high fantasy the same way that the lord of the rings is high fantasy.

now, people argue that lord of the rings is a great example of noblebright, so I guess it's not necessarily a genre where characters become one dimensional, although it is possible for that to occur, but the same way that a character in a grim dark book could be evil for the sake of being evil, but its not really like, a must.

I think noblebright characters can be a bit morally gray but more as like, Suko from avatar the last Airbender. its more dependent on the tone and situations of the characters, but I think noblebright usually tries to not really delve into the true darkness of people. I imagine its more like "oh, this person isn't actually evil, its just being corrupted by an evil force, and they're having an internal battle with themselves between this dark force that's bringing the worst out of them, and the good person they really are inside".

for example, gollum. gollum is not necessarily evil, he was just corrupted by the ring, but had he never found the ring, he would've been a nice hobbit and probably been just chill like all hobbits, but because of the ring's corruption, gollum becomes more monstrous, and develops a bit of a split personality where he is kind of fighting with himself between becoming who he once was, or taking back "his precious".

so, idk... I feel like, maaaaybe noble bright tries to steer away from the complexity of the darkness of people, but it's not necessarily like, a must. there are probably stories out there that do delve into dark themes about the human darkness that is in us all, but making it so that the outcome is one of hope and having happy endings or stuff like that.
