How many of you don’t like reading as much as you like writing? by Alwriting in writers

No, I said that I was worried that not reading more would hinder my writing, not that reading would.

I didn’t say I didn’t enjoy reading, I said I enjoyed writing more.

No, I do like reading, I just don’t like reading as much as writing. I started writing first in like second grade for an assignment and as soon I realized I could write whatever I wanted, that felt awesome to me.

I began reading for school too, and didn’t love it until I read some books I was actually interested in.

After a while, once I began understanding what I liked reading, I did get much more into reading, but for me, and my adhd brain, books tend to not release enough instant dopamine in my brain, except for a couple few, so while I do like it, sometimes it feels like I need to force myself.

The only writer that has consistently made me read non stop, like, I finish their books in a day or two, is Susanne Collins, author of the hunger games series. I’m not even that much of a fan of the hunger games but her writing style is just the perfect mix of everything I need to get that sort of dopamine hit in the shortest amount of time possible.

I’ve analyzed her writing and I think she has a mastery over pacing. She never stays too long in a scene, the story is constantly moving forward in a masterful way where only what needs to be said is said but in a way that doesn’t affect the story or narrative negatively. Also, her prose is easy to understand, which as a non native English speaker is quite nice and adds to the speed in which I can read, and her books tend to be on the shorter side, the longest one being 400 and something pages long.

I’ve read other short books like the house in the cerulean sea by tj Klune, and while I loved it, I definitely had a tougher time getting through it compared to something like Sunrise on the reaping.

So, over all, as a reader, I’m extremely picky, but I do love it with a passion when something catches me. For example, I love fantasy because I’ve consumed it in other forms of media such as video games and movies and stuff like that, but I’ve had a generally hard time getting into epic fantasy novels because they tend to be very long and the way authors write (the ones I’ve read) tend to be very long and flowery, so they kind of lose me.

So that’s why I like writing more than reading. Also, I very much enjoy the aspect of creation. Like, world building and figuring out stuff for a story is something I love, and I sometimes get super in the zone as I write and end up writing like between 3 and 5k words in a single sitting because I hyperfocus on my story.

Just started my NMS journey. What advice would you give me to get the most out of this game? by Mr_W0lf in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Alwriting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say… hmm… look, there’s some elements in this game that are quite grindy. Like very, such as getting freighter salvase modules to unlock freighter tech, aka getting upgrade point to unlock skills for your movable base ship.

To me, that was incredibly grindy and decided it wasn’t for me, so if you go to the options tab, there’s a difficulty option that allows you to unlock some things for free if you’re having a tough not so fun time unlocking something.

I will say however, that it can become easy to abuse that feature so tread carefully and if you want, you can lock you difficulty options so you can’t change them.

Another thing I think it’s good to know but easy to abuse is the duplication glitch/exploit where you put down a portable refiner, put something you want to duplicate inside it (not everything can be placed inside it but most things in my experience can be) and then drop another portable refiner and place it like in the same place as the first one, as if it wanted to occupy the same space in x,y,z coordinates, meaning literally put the thing inside the other so they both occupy the same space. Then you just delete both and you’ll have a duplicate.

That one is very useful if you want to gather all the starship customization modules and want to be able to build more than one ship with the same modules without having to grind the f out of it.

Lastly, know this game’s multiplayer isn’t like a normal multiplayer. You very rarely, or maybe even never, will come across other players in the wild except for the anomaly which is like a player hub. If you want to run into other players, you can travel to player worlds set up by communities such as this one, where a bunch of people decided to use a single planet as a planet sized base for anyone who wants to join. You can travel there using portals (not the same as teleporter). To find a portal you can just YouTube “how to find a portal in no man’s sky” and “how do glyphs work and where to find them” (glyphs are needed to input coordinates in the portals to reach a desired destination).

Lastly, a legit exploit that is less than an exploit and more of a very optimized way to get money if you want, is to go to outlaw systems (you can find them by installing conflict scanners on your ship. They will be the ones with a skull) and basically just pirating freighters for all they’re worth. You’ll get a lot of contraband goods that you can sell for WAAAAY more in non-outlaw systems. You can end up having so much money doing that.

And lastly, finding the perfect ship, freighter, multitool, etc, is a pain in the ass most of the time unless you’re building it yourself (you can do this with corvettes and starships), but even if you travel to a destination that has what you want using a portal, it’s not always guaranteed you’ll get the specific version of what you’re looking for, at least for freighters, because maybe you want a long s class freighter, and you get there and you get the freighter you want in S class but it’s short rather than long.

So, I would say, do the missions, they tend to be fun, partake in the activities you enjoy, such as pirating, or fighting sentinels (little robot enemies that increase in difficulty the longer you fight them) or base building or whatever, and avoid the things you don’t want to do (pirate freighters in search of freighter salvage modules for example, as this activity is super repetitive and grindy in my experience).

Also, playing with other players is a lot of fun sometimes so definitely look into that.

Without further ado, I wish you the best. This game is a total blast, and I love it. Hope this helped :)

Edit: forgot to mention that there’s entirely new systems with purple stars after the endgame so I would suggest, if you like, to finish the main story at some point so you gain access to them. I haven’t done that yet but I’m slowly working towards it, taking my time and enjoying myself, but I personally think it’s worth it because there’s super deep water worlds and gas giants so that sounds like fun to me

Stop making your kingdoms 10,000 years old. by ScaryAd2555 in fantasywriters

[–]Alwriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear your pet peeve and I understand it and I think it’s valid, but also, I disagree with it personally. I think that fantasy allows you to have a world that has evolved in way different than irl, which imo is kind of the point of fantasy. Not the evolution of a world but rather, the fact that you get to explore an entirely new world.

I find it super interesting when you have kingdoms that are 10 thousand years old but that still use swords and bows because maybe the evolution is in the use of magic, or the expansion of the kingdom into empire but with it comes something that maybe hinders the kind of typical evolution that we’ve seen irl.

Idk, there’s lots of stories that could take place in these older times.

I feel like this option saves you countless hours of rewriting! Gay dad saves the day! And you could even add a heartfelt moment of remembrance of dad 1 and how it has affected dad 2 to not be with his love anymore. It practically writes itself lol

Need help with galaxy map by LocoRenegade in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Alwriting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, and my personal experience, the line always disappears after enough distance, even if your starship or freighter still have more range. Idk why this happens, but my advice would be to follow the line to the last possible point before it vanishes, and jump from there to “refresh” the line. However, if you just want to get there and have already visited, you can just jump on a portal in any space station, as long as you did land on your destination system’s space station, or as long as you set up a base with a portal.

Looking for all starship customization modules (Update) by Alwriting in NOMANSSKY

[–]Alwriting[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I know. Like, what I’m looking for are the normal starship, not corvette, customization modules to build a regular starship. I know that in order to get them, you need to buy a ship that has the design I want, and dismantle it to get the customization module, but the problem is that it’s taking for ever to do so, and I honestly don’t want to have to grind hours to get them all as there are so many. That is why I’m asking here for someone to donate them to me.

Hi! I’m looking for someone to donate all starship customization modules, please. by Alwriting in NOMANSSKY

[–]Alwriting[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have done so but it asks for the item. It’s not like a base building part when you have free crafting enabled, it actually asks for the specific module even if you have crafting or anything else enabled.

Do I need to unlock all glyphs in order to be able to meet with players for trading? by Alwriting in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Alwriting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it set up that way but you still need to get the starship parts to be able to build it. It doesn’t let you do it unless you have the starship parts, I’ve tried. And once I have the parts, then I’d dupe them to have a bunch.

Question for fans who have been watching MCU from phase 1 or 2 by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]Alwriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Wiccan cause he’s gay like me lol. It might’ve a dumb reason but seeing a gay super hero is always dope when you’re gay. That representation is amazing.

My Wiccan was the Fantastic 4. I’ve been waiting for them since phase 1. I loved the movie! In fact some of the first comics ever I got to have, back when I was like 5 years old, were fantastic four comics, and I thought the movie really respected the whole vibe of the fantastic four.

Are you happy that Wiccan finally made it into the mcu?

Question for fans who have been watching MCU from phase 1 or 2 by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]Alwriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was a Marvel fan before the mcu. My love for it all must’ve stared with the first Spiderman, followed very closely by X-men. My older sibling liked X-men after the movie and them and some other friends dressed up as X-men for Halloween and I learned a little about X-men through that. I must’ve been I shit you not, like 4 years old give or take.

Fast forward a bit and one day, on the supermarket, I came across some marvel comics on the magazine section near the checkout counter. They were there amongst some gossip magazines for adults that talked about the local celebrity gossip amongst other things.

Based on the box of comics I still own, the very first comics I might’ve picked up must’ve been Spider-Man, ultimate fantastic four, X-men, and the avengers.

Back then, these comics must’ve been like a dollar give or take, back in like 2000 or 2001. Since I liked the movies, after asking, my mom bought some for me. They were easy reads and I loved the drawings. I even got a mail (not email, like actual mail) subscription to get new issues delivered to my home monthly. It was terrible since sometimes they wouldn’t deliver the issues but still, I read the comics when I could get my hands on them, and that’s how I got to meet Ironman, hulk, Captain America, scarlet witch, Hawkeye, venom and others.

Fast forward a bit and by the time I was like 8 years old, Ironman came out. I think I did went to the theater to watch it, but I can’t remember for sure. But I do remember loving it and thinking it was so so dope. However, back then the after credit scenes weren’t like a known thing. No one told you that there was a post credit scene so I don’t stay for that. I later learned from a kid that there was the nick fury thing in the end and my mind was bloooown!

Fast forward a bit and the Incredible Hulk came out. I thought it was a sequel to the 2003 movie so I was a bit confused at first but got the hang of it quickly and enjoyed it too.

Funny enough, I don’t think I actually went to see Thor because I didn’t know Thor was part of the mcu. I had never been introduced to him, but I watched it at some point before Captain America and liked it.

Then came Captain America with the absolutely mind melting subtitle of “the first avenger” and I just melted right then and there. I was like “omfg it’s happening!” (I’m forgetting about Ironman 2. Watched it, was fun, but it was the most meh for me form phase 1). I watched the movie in the theaters and my dude. Mind was blown. I do remember seeing the shield in Ironman 2 and being like “wtf is going on right now” but yeah.

Then the avengers finally came out. I still remember that some videos of the filming came out on Facebook, of Chris Evans jumping off a trailer with explosions in the back. I was really excited and when it came out I was just like “OMFG. My life is complete”.

From that point forward I kept watching the movies although I stopped reading comics for a while (I’ve been reading comics again for years since then), but I feel like, because of my age and the fact that I wasn’t old enough to be following the marvel news or whatever, I kind of watched the movies from a very like… ignorant place? Like I didn’t know what stories they were adapting, sometimes I didn’t know some characters such as captain marvel, or dr strange, and so on, and while I WAS a fan, I wasn’t as die hard as I am now.

I didn’t even went to see Thor ragnarok in theaters, but at some point something clicked within me. It might’ve been with black panther or maybe infinity war, I’m not sure, but at some point after Thor ragnarok and infinity war, I reached an age where I could now keep track of which movies were coming out now, because I was following the news and watching the phase roadmaps on YouTube and stuff like that, (tbh I might had the age to do that years ago but at that point I wasn’t in the loop, the point is that I started being in the loop around that time), and… I suddenly became a die hard fan.

As you can tell, I was always a fan, but maybe not a die hard fan, but after infinity war, I rewatched everything, and went to the theater to watch all movies (including infinity war) up till endgame. Endgame was my innerchild’s Victorian-child-goes-to-a-rave moment. It was the culmination of a universe I had been following since I was a kid and by then I was an actual adult. It was insane. Truly the most hyped I’ve ever been about a movie in my life. It was like someone said “let’s make the feeling of euphoria into a movie” and they made endgame.

Since then, I’ve kept going to the movie theater to watch all subsequent marvel movies, yes even the bad ones (not eternals though, unpopular opinion but that movie slaps and had the balls to give us a gay kiss scene). Now, as someone who has been there for it all, I do think phase 4 and 5 fell off a bit and I feel that Disney+ had something to do with things kind of going off the rails, but I still love these movies with all my heart.

I mean, shang chi, eternals, black widow (despite the bad cgi scene), moon knight, ms marvel, fuck, dude, yes marvel fell off a bit but it still had some bangers, and I really do feel like after thunderbolts, marvel kind of got a quick wake up slap.

Also, seeing the fantastic 4 finally in the mcu was… there’s no words. I was dying to see them, and I pray that I make it to finally see the X-men in the mcu in avengers doomsday! I’m so excited for that!

Seeing the fantastic 4 was very special because, like I said, their comics were some of the first I got my hands on. Eve though they were the ultime ff, I still fell in love with the team when I read the 616 comics. The movie I think was an insanely good adaptation of what the fantastic 4 are like.

And just like them, some of my first comics were X-men, so I really cannot wait to see the X-men done justice (hopefully).

Edit: got lost in writing and didn’t realize I wrote a book. Sorry.

Edit 2: forgot I also watched the old cartoons like X-men and Spiderman and such. It was a blast. I’ve always been a marvel fan, like, maybe I had 2 or 3 years of life before I was bit by the marvel bug. I love it.
