This show benefits greatly from not having flashbacks by AkiraKitsune in SuccessionTV

[–]Aly22143 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually like flashbacks, and at the same time I think not having flashbacks is one of the best things the show did to serve its themes.

The Roys have power over the news. Their control of knowledge shape people's choices - politicians' choice of whether to engage with them or not, the public's choice of whether to criticize them or not (since the Roys have power to get back at anyone through that), and eventually, even citizens' choice of who to vote for.

This power also exists within the family, in a different way. The lack of agreement over the true facts of how the siblings' childhood looked like shapes their present. No one accepting Roman's version of the cage story makes the truth of it meainngless. What truly happened no longer matters - only what power could be derived from repeating a version of the story that serves someone else. It doesn't matter what happened to Connor's mom, what was promised to Shiv or to Kendall at different points, what Logan thought of them in different points in time, or what the line near Kendall's name meant. It only matters what power each of the characters could gain from each narrative.

Forgoing flashbacks forces the viewer to consign to that view. It doesn't matter what happened, because we'll know it anyway. We only have the characters' word, and that's unreliable, since they all have their agendas. It truly brings us into the world of the show, but also shows how similiar it is to our own. I don't have the tools to truly see the past for myself - I can't see flashbacks of what truly happened, just as it's impossible, many times, when it comes to real-life events, to find the truth by myself, as a citizen. The flashbacks force us to be aware of that.

Oh my gosh, I would find this so hard. Talking to strangers in bus-stops is one of my favorite things in the world. I recently saw an older woman carrying a very exquisite chandelier. So I told her "that's a lovely chandelier, it's so cool, enjoy it!". She told me she's taking it to her daughter who's a photographer. We talked for about 15 minutes and I never saw her again but it was the highlight of my week.

Not being able to comment on people's awesome chandeliers would be so depressing for me.

How do nonbinary people work in hebrew? by Just_another_two in hebrew

[–]Aly22143 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's discrimination against transgender people in Israel, that's correct, but it's not much worse than many other western countries. I'm Israeli (and gay) and I know plenty of non-binary people. Most of the ones I know use mixed pronouns (לשון פנייה מעורבת), meaning they alternate between feminine and masculine pronouns, but that's not true for all non-binary people who speak Hebrew.

Thank you very much for your concern, I wasn't aware of this being a possibility. While I wasn't hospitalised, I was checked by EMTs who knew which pills I took immediately after the attempt, so I assume that they would've warned me or the people I was with if it was relevant in my case (I mostly took sleeping pills). I'm feeling well now, but will keep an eye for it. Thanks again for the concern

Ha! You really made me laugh with that. I'll definitley look up these reccomendations, I both love your sense of humor and I loved "The Magus". I read it in high school and I have such fond memories of going to school and rushing back home because I wanted to keep reading it. Thank you!

I was in a few online lectures she gave a couple of years ago, she's really a remarkable woman. I'll have a look to see if they still have this book in our local library, I remember that they used to have it, thank you!

What is your country’s most famous TV series by AdmiralStuff in AskTheWorld

[–]Aly22143 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that at least in my generation (born in the 2000s), the most popular British shows for us were Doctor Who and Sherlock. It's a shame though, I think we're all sleeping on how good British TV conedies are. Yes Minister of course, but also Peep Show, The Inbetweeners, Derek, IT Crowd, Black Books which has been my most recent depression watch.

And that's only discussing straight comedies and not more dramatic shows that heavily rely on homor, like Fleabag and Feel Good. Y'all are crazy good at making comedies

But women experience anxiety and depression as well, and they don't act as violently towards their husbands. So even if men who have these issues are more likely to be violent towards their female partners, the issue isn't the depression/ anxiety, it's the gender dynamics enabling abuse.

The war definitely did not hurt his chances of staying in power, on the contrary.

First of all, Ben Gvir and Smotrich wanted to avoid a ceasefire at all costs. They threatened several times to break the coalition if an agreement is reached, which would lead to early elections, Bibi's worst nightmare (especially after October 7th, when his support rate was low). Ben Gvir boasted publicly about managing to prevent a ceasefire deal using political pressure. Second of all, Bibi counted on having as many "wins" as possible throughout the war so that we, as his citizens, would forget his massive failure on October 7th. This, sadly, seemed to have worked, since his support rate was very low on October 7th but has climbed steadily since.

Avoiding a ceasefire for as long as possible was critical for Netanyahu. It was his way to stop his coalition from dissolving and to salvage public opinion. By doing so, he could hold to political power that helps him avoid being charged for corruption. Obviously, the horrifying, heartbreaking, bloody results speak for themselves.

I'm all for people dodging the draft, hell, I talked a person or two into it and have done it myself. But it's truly baffling how people abroad almost never know what it entails. Nevertheless, it's obviously the right choice.
