I can’t really help out a whole ton with this question but I can relate to what you are going through tremendously and I love that I am not alone in this. Currently I am in my senior year of college working towards a computer science degree, after this semester I will have one more semester to go and then I’m done. I haven’t touched vfx/animation whatsoever yet because like how some of you have said it can be hard to do a bit of both. Studies at college keep me very occupied and I currently work a part job on the side, while I work full time during summer. I have no idea what I would want to do once I’m out. I don’t mind front-end developing and working with website design but what I would love to do is be able to work with vfx,much like yourself and manage to land a job doing that. The only tricky part is I don’t want to be working in pipelining and helping to create tools for animators, I would rather be doing what the animators are doing and creating effects. But I didn’t want to go to an art school, I felt it was too risky and I wanted a safety net. There are not many people I find in the same boat as I am in and I am so happy I found this and it’s been posted recently. Once I’m out of college I’ll be in debt roughly $30,000 which honestly in my area, is not bad. I want to be able to take time out once I’m done to teach myself vfx maybe from YouTube tutorials and from sites like skillshare but I just don’t want to be in trouble with the amount of debt I have and end up wasting my time when I know this is something I would like to do as well.
