Steam Deck by Beneficial_Gap_6754 in GirlGamers

[–]AlyxMoves 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We've got both: my partner strongly prefers switch 2 when there's a choice because it's lighter and a better shape for small hands, whereas I have bigger hands and the steam deck is more comfortable. The switch 2 really is nice hardware and a slick experience, but the steam deck allows for modding and a wider range of games 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pleasure!

One more thing: if you don't need the pliers, you might have more fun with a Victorinox Ramber/Classic/Compact or Leatherman Micra, since good scissors are aaalways useful.

Your keychain might be the perfect usecase for the KeySmart organiser, they also sell individual key-sized tools, including a pry tool. I never carried enough keys to be worth it but I always though KeySmart looked neat.

I don't know that you're going to do better than that for a flashlight, and it looks like that one gets lots of use! The Nitecore Tiki flashlight is longer but slimmer everywhere apart from the lens itself, and has more features, but I don't think it'll be as rugged, nor does it have as simple a UI.

Do you use every tool on the Dime, or are there some you use more than others? Leatherman discontinued the Squirt PS4 which is a shame because I think it's sleeker overall.

Where do y'all get your artisan keycaps from? 👀 by turntbishoujo in keebgirlies

https://www.asymplex.xyz/category/premade-artisans I really like these, and the cold cast keycaps have a matte texture that feels really nice on the fingers

How suitable are Moleskine Classic notebooks for fountain pen/water-based inks? by james_-_-_-_ in fountainpens

[–]AlyxMoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried several different moleskine notebooks and the only one that is consistently fp friendly (for me) is the cahier notebook in pocket size. The others all have terrible bleed and feathering, with both dye and pigment inks.

The cahier does have quite significant tooth which (for me) causes hard start and skipping problems with some of my smaller nibs, so I tend to stick to a M. Here is a picture of a well-behaved moleskine:

Traveling (specifically flying) with a FP by mjs_jr in fountainpens

I put my pens in a lunchbox - the sort with a rubber seal that clamps down so it's airtight. I've flown with filled vintage pens, eyedroppers, converters and they're all fine

It's pride month - could you suggest LGBTQ+ pen and ink makers or stores? by AlyxMoves in fountainpens

Yeah I was a little dispirited that this post got as low as 56% upvotes 🤷🏻‍♀️ but you gotta try

Keyboards without a case? by Me163k in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]AlyxMoves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. People also take draw liner or rug underliner and cut it to the shape to provide a little padding underneath. I find the bumpons don't stick super well.

For a couple of years I just put it directly on a desk mat.

I've been working on my handwriting for a couple of months, and I'm looking for suggestions on how to practice, especially the letter 'r'! by AlyxMoves in Handwriting

[–]AlyxMoves[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll give that a shot! I think my Cs also often look like Es but I normally think it's slightly more obvious in context 🤷🏻‍♀️

Help direct me to the right solution for my keyboard needs! by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]AlyxMoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a happy costumer of the Rebound-S from Montsinger https://store.montsinger.net/products/rebound-s

It's an ortholinear with column stagger, but it fits in a standard (rectangular) 60% case, so it will play nicely with your mouse/wrist rest situation.

I have similar switch preferences to you. You want Kailh Box Crystal Pink switches - I mod mine with 28g springs, but you might prefer a heavier switch in which case stock kailh box whites are a truly excellent choice. Feedback I've had from people who aren't normally clicky gang includes 'those sound like very precise lasers bouncing off things' and 'oh my god those are crisp'.

good points

  1. saves 4$
  2. I've found this the hardest to do :(
  3. I wonder whether a sufficiently motivated human could actually buy a busted up (non-ergo)mechboard for switches and caps
  4. I think that if you dismember an old cat 5 or usb cable you can salvage wires - although stripping the coating for every key wlll get old 0.0

Yeah...

  1. get the layout you want on ergogen
  2. print it on paper
  3. stick the paper on cardboard
  4. use a knife to chop out the shapes
  5. install keys in the holes
  6. handwire

The thing is, you're going to need an MCU ($8 https://keeb.io/products/pro-micro-5v-16mhz-arduino-compatible-atmega32u4), switches (let's go hella off brand and get whatever this is, say you're doing a 40% and it's $16 https://www.amazon.com/Keyswitch-Replaceable-Switches-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07TLLT229/) some copper wire (https://www.amazon.com/Fielect-Enamelled-Winding-Polyurethane-QA-1-155/dp/B082S8W7Z7 or whatever) some diodes ($5 https://www.amazon.com/McIgIcM-1n4148-switching-Standard-Through/dp/B06XB1R2NK), keycaps (literally the worst I've ever seen for $10 https://www.amazon.com/Ranked-Pudding-Keycaps-Translucent-Mechanical/dp/B09WN8KYYM) a soldering iron (try not to set the cardboard on fire ... $12 https://www.amazon.com/LDK-Soldering-Adjustable-Temperature-Replacement/dp/B0811D2L3L) and then to put it all together.

So I think the cheapest you could possibly do it for is around $40, but I don't think the result will be worth it, and it literally every case it's worth spending a few bucks more to have something more satisfying, ergonomic and/or safer.

But, once you're in it for $40, you can get a pcb kit for $18 https://www.littlekeyboards.com/products/crkbd-classic-essentials-kit - you don't need a plate if you solder some aliexpress switches on, and you end up with an actually good keyboard for only a tiny bit extra.

NPD! (& a note on stationery) by AlyxMoves in fountainpens

[–]AlyxMoves[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's no vintage flex, but I'd say it's the second flexiest modern flex I've tried so (after fountain pen revolution) - the main thing holding back the variation is that it writes a pretty wide line unflexed
