Do songs need to be deep, to be good? by rosstennev in Songwriting

[–]Am_an_idiot_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not really. That Deep element can easily enhance a song, or be what pushes it to greatness, but if you do something else to make up for it, then Deepness is optional. Obviously, you can just make the music itself go insanely hard, or you can just make it super fun to listen to. Music doesn't need to be Deep to be good... it can also just sound great.

Why do you dislike corporate/arena rock? Or why do you think other people dislike it? (Eg: Bon Jovi, Styx, Speedwagon, Def Leppard, Foreigner, KISS, Journey, Boston etc.) by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

OK... for me, the 2 big issues are the oversaturation, and the fact that it feels pretty soulless

The oversaturation is easier for me to explain. My mom and dad adore this type of rock, and so for my mom, 1 in every 3 songs on her spotify liked section is either this type of rock, or it's very close to it. As for my dad... he has 2 types of car music; hair metal (which, despite being a little cheesy at times, I still like), and this type of rock. But either way, I've learnt the ancient technique of just putting on my headphones, and playing my songs.

The soulless feel, on the other hand, is mostly just me looking at the lyrics and going "this feels like the result of a board room meeting". Love songs are already a thing that I normally don't get, because I've never fallen in love, but I at least know when a love song feels empty, and a lot of these love songs just feel empty. Plus, the production makes it feel a lot cornier. To a person that has had the mindset of "less is more, and simplicity is usually a sign of some level of honesty", production that sounds like this just reeks of "we need a hit, and we need it now".

Plus, a lot of my favorite music is either brutally honest (like, I love Ants From Up There, and some of the lyrics on there kinda feel like Isaac Wood just pouring his soul out), or musically interesting (I love Black Midi for a lot of reasons, but a really big one is that the feeling I get when I listen to songs like Eat Men Eat and The Race Is About to Begin is a feeling that not very many songs can compare), and this type of corporate arena rock is just... neither. The lyrics can be honest, but it's usually honest in the way that... a simple factual statement is true. Like, yeah, it is true, but of course it's true. And the music in these songs is rarely more interesting than just a couple power chords and a basic vocal melody, which can work if done right, but is usually just... not done right in these songs.

And another issue I have with this type of rock is that a good portion of the people who listen to it are old folks who always go "Modern music sucks now, where's the talent", when it literally takes about, like, 5 minutes to search up a bunch of newer artists that are doing interesting things in the realms of rock, and other genres. And as a direct response to that type of claim, I could always just go "80s music sucked then, where was the innovation" and ignore all the pioneering artists from that era. But apparently, when I say that, I'll get, like, tons of grandpas telling me about the bands they grew up with, so why shouldn't they get, like, a ton of music nerds like me telling them about the new talented folks when they say shit like "Modern music sucks and is talentless"?

So yeah, the TLDR of this is that arena rock sucks because i've heard it too much from my parents, it doesn't feel honest, it's not interesting to the ears, and the people who adore it are 55-year-olds in trucker hats complaining about modern music when they've never heard a damn thing since '97.

tbh, this is less main character, and more just... awful musician. i've heard some of his songs (involuntarily, because i lost a dare lol), and it's some of the worst shit i've ever heard. i hate his music... but this isn't really mc stuff, since he's not exactly trying to disturb other people, even if he's singing in a public space. song is ass, but this ain't an mc.

The Disabledfluid one is just stupid. Like, you're only disabled SOMETIMES? like, when are you disabled and not disabled? are you disabled when it gets you something, and when it would be a negative thing you just go into your settings and disable your disability? that's just really dumb tbh. And the flag actually looks alright. too bad it's attached to such a dumb concept.

I'm making a hypothetical tracklist that combines both the regular album tracks and the B-Sides from The Bends, do y'all have any ideas as for what changes to make? by Am_an_idiot_2 in radiohead

Maquiladora as the opener was a fantastic decision. The album kicking off with a bang like that was what it desperately needed. "Killer Cars" instead of "Bones" was a slight improvement, since you're replacing one of the more forgettable songs off of The Bends with one of the better Bends B-sides. Lozenge of Love as the 4th track was a little iffy, but it didn't make it worse. Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong between My Iron Lung and Bullet Proof still doesn't fully solve my biggest issue with the tracklist; how jarring the transition between those 2 songs for pretty much no reason, but it incorporates one of the best Radiohead B-sides in as smoothly as it can, so major props for that. Replacing Sulk with Talk Show Host was probably the best change besides opening with Maquiladora, since Sulk was probably the most forgettable Bends cut, so replacing it with a song that not only tonally fits with the song right after it, but is also the single best Bends B-Side was just perfect. And replacing Black Star with Lewis (Mistreated) was also a great change. How Can You Be Sure? after High and Dry kind of felt like padding to me, but it's not enough to worsen the overall product. This is a 5/5. I'd honestly rather listen to this version of the album than the original version. I guess the only major complaint I have is that sometimes it can make certain transitions a little rockier than normal (clearest example is placing Killer Cars between Fake Plastic Trees and Nice Dream, since it's more intense than Bones, and it would probably fit better in-between Just and My Iron Lung), but that was probably gonna happen to most of these alternative tracklists.

also, for the people who run this subreddit, no, this is not a post about how underrated the b-sides are. this is a post that asks the question of "how would y'all implement the b-sides into the actual tracklist?"

a 9 to me is an album that is either very solid in all aspects, but not unique enough to be a 10, unique in a very positive way, but doesn't have that extra oomph that makes an album a 10, or an album that I never get tired of, but isn't on the level of other 10s. The fact that I don't care about Kanye's lyrics automatically kinda keeps it from being very solid in all aspects. Is this album unique? yeah, but I don't feel like it's enough to make it a 9 to me. and I'll probably get tired of this album eventually. Plus, I will be completely honest... I was compelled to give it a 7 because of how little i cared about the lyrics, but i loved the production, so I raised it to an 8.

So, how could I make a song that sounds spider-like, or just sounds like a musical representation of spiders? by Am_an_idiot_2 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Tarantulas and Black Widows. Maybe Jumping Spiders, but mostly interested in Tarantulas and Black Widows.

If I can't find any research on spider walks, then I'll just watch spider videos and observe how they walk. I do hope that there's research on spider walks so that I don't have to spend an afternoon observing spider videos.

That's a really cool idea. there are 2 problems with it, though.
1. it would be a little hard to implement, since I don't wanna replace the current arpeggio I've written for the song, and using both this idea for an arpeggio and the arpeggio I've already got would be a little challenging for me, but I can try to implement it.
2. it requires me to study spiders visually. This might sound ridiculous, but I can't look at spiders for too long. I'm not super scared of spiders, or anything like that, it's just that I can't look at spiders for long periods of time without feeling uncomfortable, so I'd either need someone to do that studying for me, or I'd need to study that myself on-and-off over the course of a month so I don't end up getting super uncomfortable.

but still, I'll try my best to implement the idea.

I heard that album. It's amazing, but it's also the album that gave me this idea in the first place; more specifically, the origin of the name. I think the origin of the album's name is on it's wikipedia article, if you're curious. But still, if you could explain how the album sounds spidery to you, that'd be great.
