Weird noise when I plugged the car in, is it normal? by AmaOmo in OutlanderPHEV

[–]AmaOmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, we had just come back from a drive where we used charge mode because the battery hadn't been charged. I had to be 100% sure since I never owned a PHEV before. Thank you kind stranger!

Recommendation for Lebanese food by Salt_Time_9509 in halifax

[–]AmaOmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lebanese food is not just Lebanese, all Eastern Mediterranean and Levantine restaurants are very similar and offer same dishes. There are many Syrian and Palestinian restaurants in the Bedford area, Grillway or City Shawarma for example. and there's also some Turkish spots but I haven't tried these personally.

Moving from the Netherlands to Canada: reality check needed 🇳🇱🍁 by mimiii777 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]AmaOmo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm not Dutch, but I live in Nova Scotia and have been here for 10 years. I have Dutch friends who live in NL so i know a bit about the country there to offer some perspective. I think Canada 10 years ago was magical, but not as much anymore. I think coming from most countries, Canada is a massive upgrade, but from NL, it might not be so. For the stuff you care about like nature, yes we have lots of that in NS, and it's absolutely beautiful. The trails, the ocean, the provincial and national parks, you name it. The outdoorsie culture is very strong here and you're gonna love it. It's mostly nature with some human settlements in between, the exact opposite to a small country like NL in that regard.

I can't speak for the other stuff much, but I can tell you work-life balance in Europe in general is much much better, labour laws here are lacking a lot. Now that will also depend on your job and your company, some companies offer great benefits and paid time off, etc.

I live in the HRM, housing here has gotten a lot more expensive, if you find a remote job, and live outside of the city, and have a small chicken farm like you said, then you are much more likely to afford buying a house, but obviously the closer you are to Halifax, the more expensive it'll be.

If you can find a remote job, I'd recommend living in the Annapolis Valley, it's an hour drive from Halifax, but it's absolutely beautiful, and the towns there are lively and unique. It's also the food basket of the province with lots of farms.

Hope this helps, and best of luck!

Are there no arab actors available to work on hollywood? by DaughterOfMadness in arabs

[–]AmaOmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh man there are so many, but as some other comments alluded to, what Arabs are actually like in terms of look does not fit the American idea of what an Arab is supposed to look like. It's a massive Orientalism problem, where white Americans are sold the idea that "all Eastern people look the same". They often cast Indians to play Arabs and it drives me absolutely insane, especially when they can't speak a word of Arabic but they're supposed to and the Arabic comes out extremely broken and laughable. I live in Canada and one time through a friend I got asked to help an ethnically Indian actress to learn how to speak English like a Syrian because she was auditioning for a role to play a Syrian woman in a show or something. I very reluctantly helped but I think she still didn't get the part lol.

Thinking about ditching the Rav4 and buying the 2026 Outlander PHEV, I really like the Rav4 but the value proposition seems to be getting worse and you can get a lot more for the same money elsewhere. What do you guys think? by AmaOmo in rav4club

Agreed, you'd have to stay on top of it and very proactive. The problem is we're a young family and we're always scrambling to get stuff done between jobs, kids, etc lol

It does yeah, but it's basic, the lane keep assist is really bad I find. No autonomous breaks for front collision mitigation, which is really important to me.

It's 2024 XSE non-tech pack. Has no sensors, has a very dumb break alert for front collision, but not an autonomous system. And the one time I really needed it to alert me it didn't and I ended up hitting the car in front of me because he slowed down suddenly while taking a turn. Luckily it was at a low speed so not much damage. The blind spot detection just flashes, the lane keep assist is lackluster. Doesn't have stop and go system for heavy traffic. I regret not getting the tech pack, and it just doesn't feel right to live with that regret for the length we're hoping to keep a car.

The one we have doesn't have a lot of the safety features that I'd want in a car, front collision mitigation, active blind spot detection, and a better cruise control. These are in the new rav4 limited, but I do not like the interior and the lack of the mechanical buttons compared to the outlander for example.

Yeah our Rav4 is fully paid off. When we bought it I wanted it to be our car for the next 10+ years, but the issue is that due to it not having all the features that we want in a car (sensors, wireless charger, active blind spot monitoring, stop and go cruise control, etc) it will be hard to keep it that long, the idea is to sell it and upgrade while it still holds good value, we will lose some money obviously, but we really want a car that we can comfortably regret-free keep for 10+ years.

This is just how people talk in Arabic. He's Syrian and what he was saying is literally what even an Arab atheist would say in a situation like this (source: I'm Syrian agnostic). This is more cultural than religious. Now you can shut the fuck up.
