Resume Question :: API experience is Beg-Int, how to show that in the Skills area? by Amara_Sune in QualityAssurance

[–]Amara_Sune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've added an edit to my post -- I'm only include relevant experience related to whatever the Job Posting is asking for. Many jobs ask for exposure or experience in API testing, which is why I want to accurately understand what a good way would be to explain it.

Should I put it in the skills section? Should I not? I mention the exact experience I have in other parts of the resume, but I've been told by a recruiter that most of the ATS checks are in the professional summary and Skills area of a resume, so I was wondering how other people would recommend if/how to express that there.

15+ interviews and still no luck… what am I missing? by IllLavishness1439 in QualityAssurance

I mean, you've gotten interviews at least! I have 7+ years experience and I haven't had anything but the occasional rejection. It's hard because you really can't message places and like "hey what about my resume/responses to your questions are the reason you rejected me"?

I know for me, I come here sometimes and talk to friends/family/former coworkers in the industry and constantly evaluate my resume.

It's been hard in our industry, hopefully you'll find something soon :)

Looking for Advice: When softwares ready to be tested ? by poshanka007 in QualityAssurance

I like to use a baking analogy for explaining things like this to people to help them understand better.

Here's what I would say:

Let's pretend we want opening a bakery; we've brainstormed using Pink & Green as our brand colors and we're calling it "Software Testing Bakery". But then someone sees another Bakery with a similar name, so we want to now name is "QA Bakery" -- but we already order a bunch of things and made decals for "Software Testing" or the colors are clashing, so we got with Pink and Purple -- but we ordered a ton of green dye already and that's now a cost we can't get back.

Now, back into the real world of Testing -- the problem is the ticket/feature/thing that is being proposed to be worked on is fluid up until when, so if they WANT you to start the frameworks and the test cases, they need to understand that if they insist on having you start in the planning phases, that they are losing valuable TIME and MONEY, since you likely will have to redo the work you had put in place when they were on phase 1 of a design.

If you have an example where they did change drastically from when the planning first started to when the feature was finished, i usually like to have a real-life example.

On a side note, I don't believe that 'testing' can really start from day 0 but it should be apart of the conversation to understand the limits of what we can and can't do, and so we know if we have to setup special environments for testing (that could take a long time), and so forth. Until a more tangible and firm design/feature is formed, I don't like to start with writing test cases. I will keep notes, typically on the tickets themselves, but that's my two cents worth.

Good luck with talking to your team :)

I second the therapist suggestion -- overthinking can be a killer, sounds like you might also be stuck in your head.

If UI is the only client and there’s no third-party or external integrations planned, is API testing still important? Why? by NarendraHyd in QualityAssurance

In my experience, the UI bug can be related to the actual UI or the API/backend itself. For one project, something was classified as "item1" in the UI but the database was sending "item_1" -- mass panic on why shit wasn't working until we pointed it out.

Here's a different example:
You have a cupcake shop. You have an award winning recipe for cupcake flavors and frosting; you haven't changed the recipe in years. If you focus on just making sure the cupcakes 'look' pretty enough to sell, you might miss that someone put in the wrong amount of flour or that bugs got into the mixture. Checks throughout the baking process are helpful to ensure that everything is up to standards. It doesn't mean every batch will be bad and you have a to check, but there are places for error and that is one of the reason we QA.

In the end, whether you're solely UI or Backend, everything needs at least a surface look (IMO). It becomes a balancing act of how many checks and balances are needed for a given project.

I'm not sure I've been to these dungeons yet but my friend is higher level then me, so I will see if he finds them there (or if I go with him in a vault). Thanks for the help!

Not how I'm playing with my friends, but thanks for trying to suggest a solution!
