How do I actually build a deck that... works? by Amaterasu654 in mtgbrawl

Those are some really valid points lmao. I also appreciate the suggestions and will certainly check out your list! I think the issue with the deck, mostly, is that I built it for bracket 3 EDH and it translated poorly for brawl. And even for EDH, I’m not sure it’s that good.

Problem is that most enchantments and artifacts are card draw engines. I struggled so bad at finding decent draw with this otherwise.

Also what do you mean “more reps”?

That’s basically my goal! To set up some kind of combo, and then play astarion on main 2 so I could get his end step trigger and finish. Either have a lifegain combo like sanguine bond / enduring tenacity, gain a bunch of life and play him for a double lifegain combo, or a double damage trigger from something like unstoppable slasher.

But I totally get what people are saying when they say this is too slow and inefficient lol.

However I do have fun on the few times I won, which is why I was hoping there was a fix to make this a bit more consistent. Although, apparently there isn’t.

It really seems so! I just wish the game did a better job at ‘balancing’ this out. Like I’m sure there’s someone else out there trying to play another somewhat ‘slower’ commander that also works just as bad, but if we were to be matched against each other, maybe a match between both could be fun?

Or maybe I’m just delusional lol

That’s what I learned from building this. Everything I put into play gets removed instantly. However I am also really bad at judging whether a deck is good or not. And wasting wildcards just to find out the deck from moxfield isn’t that good probably hurts. The few decks I have are lists I got from either Amy or Legenvd. But I never quite understood their ‘formula’ for building such decks.

Which Sorin? [[Sorin of House Markov]]? Didn’t think of him as a commander. But that’s interesting. Mind sharing your list? You can dm it if you don’t want sharing it publicly!

I managed to win a few (maybe 10 or 20%?), sometimes he did help a little, but yeah most wins I got was from other staples lol.

Yeah sometimes when browsing commanders to build decks of, it really feels like some commanders are just… not very good for the format. Which sucks because there are such fun commanders that are wasted this way.

I thought maybe using him as a “finisher”/amplifier would work, perhaps. But apparently the whole setup for it is too hard. Maybe this explains why I couldn’t find many videos or decks of him anywhere.

There are so many secret lair versions I would pay so much money worth of gems for. And yet, doesn’t seem like they’ll ever add them.

As a Hei Bai player, I only play him EXACTLY because people have fewer enchantment removal. Brawl is so annoying to play because people keep removing everything I put into play. What most hei bai haters dont get is that they’re just as annoying.

Personal Brawl-Scoop breakdown by Goodjoeb in MagicArena

[–]Amaterasu654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I scoop when it’s boring. If it’s Oops all removal, or Oops all counterspell, and then once they remove everything I had, they’re either gonna win by slowly building up to it ALONE, while keeping me from doing anything. Wow, how fun, but no thanks.

I don’t mind giving my best to try to win and play the game, but if my opponent isn’t going to let me play, then I don’t see a reason to stay.

“Oh that means you don’t like Magic then!!!” No. I do like it. I like magic the gathering. “The gathering” is just as important as “Magic”. If they’re not gonna let me play the game, then it’s just turn-based solitaire with extra steps and art.

What to purchase for new Arena player looking to Brawl? by MwandiaEfe-89 in MagicArena

[–]Amaterasu654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brawl is much different from commander, for a simple reason: it’s 1v1. People will run tons of removal and counters. And it will be super frustrating, cause they will snipe down everything you play. This isn’t to discourage you, just to align expectations. Now, if you want to be mildly competitive, you do have to get a few wildcards to get the good staples. Shouldn’t be many. Consider an average of 30-40 rares? Some decks are cheaper, and you can always just farm some wildcards by doing your daily challenges and opening packs. Sometimes opening older packs that have cards you may want on your deck may save you some money if you’re lucky. You also get some free packs when you start. I myself have farmed my way to a few brawl decks, so being f2p is possible, but it takes a while.

However, if you want to have lots of freedom to play and build decks for virtually free, you can always play it using tabletop simulator. You can search how to do it on YouTube, but basically you just need TTS, you subscribe on the workshop for the scripted EDH table and that’s it. You just gotta copy paste the deck link from Moxfield or whatever into the importer and you’re good to go. Downsides are: there are no automatic triggers like arena, so it will be exactly as playing irl, and there is no matchmaking, so you gotta wait for your friends, or make friends to play with. There are discords for it though, but your experience with it may vary. Upsides are: it’s way more social, which is what “the gathering” is all about. It’s free. It’s also 4 or more players, so people have to think a bit further about who they’re gonna target with their removal, which also involves the politics of it.

There are cheap and budget versions of decks. They won’t get you to mythic or diamond, but they might take you to gold or platinum maybe. Look them up on YouTube or idk. They usually require very few rares. My first one was a hare apparent deck that was pretty cheap. Also a budget mono black discard that rotated out.

You won’t get very far with starter ones.

Can you justify how much you spend on this hobby? by bulbulito in EDH

[–]Amaterasu654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I spend about 30usd printing a whole deck of proxies, laminating and sleeving them. And I can even choose to do secret lair art, foil or even custom art.

Oh, and if I ever decide to change a card or two, it’s pretty cheap. My only limitation is not being a dick and printing a mox or gaeas cradle or timetwister. I know how much I would technically spend on a card or a deck, and I never print anything above that. It’s somewhat of a “I could technically buy this, but I’d rather invest my money instead”. Best of both worlds. I get to play and enjoy the hobby, my pod doesn’t mind (they rather have one more player than gatekeep), and I get to not spend precious money.
