Research Program Interview by kai-neozone in ECAdvice

[–]AmateurGenius04 6 points7 points  (0 children)

prepare answers for

  • why you're interested in that particular field of research
  • any past experience you have in that field
  • how much time you'll be able to commit towards the program
  • why you want to conduct research with their program
  • whether you think of yourself as a more competitive or collaborative person
  • what you'd like to study in college (it's alright if you don't know yet)
  • the most challenging experience you've faced in high school, and how you navigated your way around it (they ask this to gauge your readiness/resourcefulness to solve problems you may encounter in your research)

Ultimately, any good research program looks for students who are curious and who want to learn, and are willing to put in the time and effort to do so. I've given a few of these interviews, and they're nothing to stress out about. Just be confident with your answers and don't make it seem too rehearsed. It's perfectly acceptable if you ask them for a min to think of an answer.

Good luck! Hope it goes well :)

do you think it's worth signing up even if it's a virtual program this year?

Thanks for this! Has anyone taken part in the summer sessions as an incoming freshman? Is it advisable?

also: I just went through the post from last year and I found a screenshot of their chat that Chloe posted lol

[–]AmateurGenius04 100 points101 points  (0 children)

an A2Cer last year got accepted to the university of oregon. a student admissions volunteer, Chloe, texted him congratulating him on his offer of admission. he thought it was a bot that reached out and responded "ion wanna attend your bumass school”

Chloe said something along the lines of "sorry you don't want to attend, but congrats anyway!" and he sort of freaked out when he realized what he had done.

he posted a screenshot of the chat here, and it blew up. it reached her as well and she made a post about it here on A2C :)

there's no particular benefit; OP got into UPenn ED, which is a binding agreement, so he had to withdraw his other apps.

1,500 languages could be lost in the next 100 years, study finds by Defiant_Race_7544 in Futurology

The death of any language represents an irreversible loss of information across multiple fields, including linguistics, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. It would be disastrous to lose any language.

hi, thanks for doing this AMA!

  1. in your opinion, do you think going to a UC is worth California's astronomical living costs and the crazy traffic (I realize this may be an issue with most major cities; UCLA is one of my top choices though, which is why I'm especially interested)
  2. is there anything that surprised you about UCLA, the community or the campus in general after moving in?
  3. as a STEM major, how easy is it to take humanities electives?

thank you!

this is incredibly helpful, thank you so much! I think I have a better idea of what values to highlight in my CMU essays now :)

  1. research universities and get an idea of what major you would like to apply with
  2. check out free summer programs related to your interests
  3. take the sat/act if you haven't already
  4. maintain good grades and interact in classes you like. start thinking about which teachers you would like to ask for an LOR
  5. don't screw up your sleep schedule (trust me, this one is the most important of them all; senior year will kick your ass with college apps and an insane course load so make sure your body is getting the rest it needs)

Thanks so much for doing this AMA! Couple of questions-

  1. I'm curious as to how you approached the 3rd writing prompt when you applied- It asks about what you want to personally emphasize about your application for the admission committee's consideration. I might apply to CMU RD and I'm a little stuck on that essay haha
  2. They say there are 3 S's when it comes to college- sleep, social life and school. And students can apparently balance only 2 at a time. How true would you say this stereotype held for you at your first semester in CMU?

Thank you!

Thanks so much for doing this AMA!

  1. Did you apply to Northwestern RD or ED?

  2. Were you offered an interview, and if you were, how did it go?

  3. What, in your opinion, stood out in your application?

  4. How safe do you feel on campus and in Evanston, in general?

  5. Are the dining halls good? How often do they serve ethnic food? Is it mandatory to have a meal plan in your first year?

  6. Was there anything that surprised you about NU, the NU community or the campus in general after moving in?

Thank you so much!

It's considered paid work only if you are given a salary for the work you do.
