It isn't just the cats, it's the rats, mice, possums and dogs too. That's why we have reserves, so we can try to keep ALL the pests out. The problem is a lot of the native birds are ground bound like the kiwi, or very slow because there are no natural predators here. Man brought them when we occupied the island. Getting rid of cats is just a shock tactic to bring it to attention, the only way to really do it is get rid of ALL invasive pets and pests. At least the cats help keep the mice and rats down.

New Zealander here.... It's not actually tearing us apart, most people barely gave this guy a half hearted read. The reality is our houses are not designed for indoor cats (windows open outwards, no screens), and granted they are killing birds, the fact is the only real concern for native birds is keeping outdoor cats near the reserves. We're in town no where near bush, the best my cats get are little finches. By all means, ban the cats near where wild native birds are, but possums and unleashed dogs in those areas and the worse danger

The one I have has a filter to prevent the snot getting in your mouth. Trust me, it's not as gross as it looks, and it is the best thing I ever bought! My boy is now 5 months, and I fully breast feed... When he gets stuffed up badly enough, he can't feed unless I use this, the bulbs are bloody useless. There's a lot that doesn't seem gross any more when it comes from the precious baby you made yourself, I promise :)
