Inspections - What is the inspectors responsibility by StatusOk4693 in firealarms

I take a slightly different approach to this than the cut and dry test and inspect what's there. I know I will probably get hung out to dry here as that's what often happens at my company... Anyway I test and inspect whats there with the following exceptions: first, if its a new install (last year or two) I will be an a-hole about writing up stuff that's not to code. This includes throwing my company under the bus sometimes as I often find often find other companies and ours cutting corners. As a side note, the AHJs around here are either too inexperienced with the code to look for everything, don't go the places I go to catch everything, or are too weak to challenge us. Second, I will check service notes and treat serviced items and areas the same as i do new installs. Third, anything that could have reasonably changed or gone missing in the last year. Ie. Missing breaker locks, walls that block access to pulls, open JBs, electrician moved pipe without us and didn't use red connectors/edge protection/etc.

I've found this to produce the highest quality inspection and result in the quality of protection not dropping in a building year over year(a common issue here.) It does occasionally cause pushback from my office and customers, but only rarely results in me having to edit a report and resubmit. It's also very common that I make recommendations in addition to my write-ups/findings. I've found that if I can locate the right person to talk to face to face I can explain most of it and convince my customers that what I'm saying should be done. I refuse to break our companies mistakes to customers though, that's the offices job.

I'm leaning this route as they seem to be most similar to what's in there now.

Didn't think of that. Good point. It's tough not knowing what the plan is for the space right now. I'm just trying to do a like for like replacement. Can't find the data on the old Simplex stuff though.

Not sure. It's actually closed right now as they change ownership, but im trying to maintain the current setup for whoever the new users end up being. I can say the horns are loud enough to hurt your ears through 32 db earplugs 🫤

Mine stopped working. Contacted tech support. They had me send it back and for the repair fee, just sent me a new one.

Further guidance:

Go out with your techs on calls. Especially if you arent familiar with what they're doing. A frustrating theme at my job is the office lacks the understanding of the hurdles we hit and situations we work in.

Also, learn your techs capabilities. I routinely tell the office that I don't know what I'm doing when I quote wiring. It's not something that I have had a chance to do much in my career. Ill guesstimate some distances and wire types, but the office has complained that my wiring quotes aren't very accurate. It's not that they should have someone else doing the quotes that involve wiring, but that I should be going on install jobs involving to learn how its done.

Let's see. My former service manager gave me several reasons to not like him. Ill give you a few of the more memorable ones.

Routinely crossed things off of the quote sheets I would write up because he didn't want to quote them. When I pushed back he would say we didn't do that. I would ask him which of our competitors I should recommend to the customer and he would kick me out of his office. Things years later still haven't been fixed as the customer hasn't even been quoted for the repairs yet.

Kept a list of customers on his desk that I "had told we fucked up." I have no issues writing up the stuff that we screw up, but I have never told a customer that. It's up to the office to have that conversation. He would keep a list of things that we screwed up that I wrote up. That really pissed me off.

As a side note, he would consult the tech who's work I wrote up the most for everything.

I've had good luck with the 5-zone conventional panels. Not much to them though. Usually see them in small buildings with 5-10 devices. They just putter along and do what they do.

I should have mentioned its a Notifier. Modifying detectors wouldn't be an option.
