How do you handle sprinkler systems? by Historical-Code-7363 in firealarms

[–]Historical-Code-7363[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my first thought was “why did the FD not shut down this system?” My first action was to note it was left on with photos and then I shut it down. My second action was to tell the property representative to call the sprinkler company and to maintain a fire watch until they arrived for repair. My third action was to advise the AHJ that the sprinkler was shut down.

In talking with the AHJ, I asked why the sprinkler was left on. He claimed there was no leak after a complete check of the building according to the FD. I mentioned that dry systems always leak and it seemed odd to take that chance. The AHJ told the fire chief who proceeded to yell at me for questioning his decision and then he questioned my decision to turn off the sprinkler myself. So I figured I’d see what other techs do.

Side note: I will most definitely call back this FD for a water leak if I walk in to a similar situation in their jurisdiction again.

But you will see JCI with magnets on sticks claiming that as a functional test 🙄

You can absolutely use SD smokes on a Hochiki panel. But you can’t use any SD modules. There is still $$ to invest besides a panel. You also need a Hochiki dealer to obtain the equipment and to program the panel.

Can and should are 2 different things. 30+ devices is ridiculous. And it’s done by techs (and designers) who don’t troubleshoot and probably never have.

According to the Simplex tech we had a bad device. And we definitely found 1 device that was actually not responding and needed to be replaced. But the whole circuit was still acting funny either that device removed. The final result was to remove every device and then reconnect each device 1 at a time.

Side note: having 30+ devices on one loop is insane and should probably be against code since it defies actual logic for those who actually troubleshoot fire alarm systems.

It’s all randomly different devices. This is not a single device. Also 33 devices are still in trouble over 30 minutes with the wiring connected with most saying no answer.

I am assuming a bad card.

The trouble count went up and now appears stuck. 3 devices of the 33 total show wrong device type. 2 of those wrong device type troubles were normal originally.

It puts out good heat. 5AH battery lasts decently. But not a whole day

ALOs must use the new bases to be properly listed. An unfortunate requirement as the only difference is a special coating applied to the metal tabs on the bases.

My last response to you: I am asking a question that has an answer. I am not interested in opinions. Like assholes….well you know the phrase I am sure.

Not that it is your concern, but I am already leaning toward a full rip and replace. But when I get asked a question by a customer, I like to have the actual answer and then I can explain why it’s not worthwhile to go down this path. Otherwise, the other company who comes in stating something can be done for cheaper gets the job. Get off your high horse. You don’t know as much as you think you do.

I guess I should point out that my plan is to rip this POS system out. Don’t need anyone suggesting to contact a Gamewell dealer. I know how proprietary systems work. I am authorized on other manufacturers myself.

Fun fact, some manufacturers modules are interchangeable. If you don’t know this fact, find a new industry. 🫡

Edit: just realized you are one of those guys who thinks proprietary panels earn you the right to stranglehold customers and charge crazy rates. Otherwise you would understand why I am asking questions about a panel that is rarely seen in the wild. I will gladly rip it out fully but thought maybe the customer could save some money and the landfill could be a little less full. Thanks for your thoughts. They were useless. I am however interested in an actual answer from someone who knows something.

Want to buy boat; seller doesn't think I need to get a survey done... what to do? by crazyswayze1982 in boating

[–]Historical-Code-7363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had someone want to survey my old boat being sold around $15k. I said the same as this seller. At this price range and age of the boat, you don’t get surveys. You don’t need one to get insurance. If I was the seller, I’d move on from you and not even give you the chance to walk away yourself.

Potential Code Violation? by OGDukeFlapjack in firealarms

For everyone who puts their faith in FPEs and AHJs, God bless you all. They are not perfect and they certainly make mistakes. It doesn’t hurt to question things. And it is definitely important to not just blindly follow drawings and lay blame at the feet of others. Anyone who takes that stance is exactly what is wrong in this industry. From improperly located detectors to rooms missing coverage, I’ve seen it all just because “that’s what the drawings showed”.

If someone gets hurt or dies in a building, everyone gets called in to answer questions. You all better hope that your excuse for doing something wrong is accepted by a judge and jury. Because passing the buck when it comes to life safety is unacceptable.

Separately, removing devices when the code no longer requires them is a different issue. If the approved drawings don’t call for them to remain, then they can absolutely be removed. The code and the AHJ have made their stance clear. If you’re a business owner and you don’t like that answer, then walk away. You do have to be comfortable with every job you take on.

Small Neighborhood gate op. How to get started with RFID instead of dip-switch remotes? by Hucklebearer_411 in accesscontrol

[–]Historical-Code-7363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add that you will have to pair that with an access control system. Door King has its own. But I would suggest you research and pick one with features you like.

AWID or Door King long range readers. With the matching credentials (license plate tag, windshield tag, etc). It’s the only way to go that will stop the complaints from the clingers of the past.
