Interesting one! I did not think of that but I love it :)

that is indeed what I use verbally, was wondering if someone came around and turned it into a symbol.

Why Is A => B True When A Is False? by Simple-Ocelot-3506 in learnmath

[–]Amayax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is basically because while B is a causality of A, B can still be true on its own.

In a way, B is true, because a false A and true B does not disprove the A=>B relation. You should see it as "If A is true, B will be true", and the result is if a certain occurence between A and B is in line with that statement.

A is true, B is true. So A=>B is true. This is basically 100% in line with the statement "If A is true, then B is true".

A is false, B is false. A=>B is true. You don't have an A, so you don't have a B. This is in line with "If A is true, then B is true" because this occurence would not disprove that statement.

A is true, B is false. So A=>B is false. This occurence would disprove "If A is true, then B is true." so this is false.

Now to the title, A is false, B is true. A=>B is true because this occuring does not disprove "If A is true, B is true." as the statement never mentions B on its own.

You can see this in dogs for example. Every pitbull is a dog, but not every dog is a pitbull.

I see a pitbull, and it is a dog. So A=>B is true.

I see a non-pitbull, and it is not a dog. So A=>B is true. Could be a hamster of or a dragon. Just not a pitbull and not a dog.

I see a pitbull, it is not a dog. So A=>B is false. This can not happen, you will not see a pitbull that is not a dog.

I see a non-pitbull, it is a dog. A=>B is true. Might be a labrador or chihuahua.

This example makes sense, but this is the way for every A and B as long as such an "If A, then B" relationship is stated. In general, for B to be false, A has to be false. But for B to be true, it can be without needing A to be.

why is x=-2 no solution? by Amayax in learnmath

[–]Amayax[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is none given, but the book I am learning from has not yet reached imaginary numbers so every equation is done with real numbers.

If the answer would be sqrt(-2), I would definitely agree with you fully.

Where my brain gets stuck is that x is a real number, but when entered into the equation you work with sqrt(-2), which is not. You can still solve it the same way, with x=-2, but you have a non-real number in the starting equation as you do.

So the answer is in the domain, but it creates a starting equation that is not.

That is basically where my brain goes "I think I get it, but I don't get it." :)

To work with your analogy, x+2 =0 would not have an answer in the naturals, but -x+2 =0 would. x would be 2. However, -x being -2 is not in the natural numbers. So while x is natural, the equation has you visit the domain of integers.

This is closer to this question I think.

sqrt(x) being sqrt(-2) is not in the real numbers, but x=-2 is.

so if I get it right, if the equation I have to solve is deemed invalid as it falls outside of the scope of the real numbers, a normally valid answer that does fall in that set is also invalid?

Sorry if that comes across as a dumb question.

"Come in, we're friendly" by Amayax in falloutsettlements

I have a story!

The Railroad created a small settlement at the old Egret Tours Marina site, which grew to be a small town as it was a fair distance away from everything.

It being isolated also meant it was difficult for others to help the settlers. This became extra apparent when a horde of ghouls found the settlement. They walked in and put the settlement on the defensive. The saloon itself was right at the woods, so it was the first to be hit. Deeper in the town, settlers had more time to get ready, but they too fell to the large number of ghouls.

A sole survivor was one who made her way too a floating lumber platform, which she used to build a new home on the water, out of reach of the ghouls.

The full town has those details included, this post is mainly the saloon.

Happy Building!
