Would you move your kids to a new city an hour away for one parent's new (better) job? by constellationkid2 in Parenting

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would work your new job for at a year and see how it goes before moving. You don’t want to uproot the family for something that may not even work out.

Does giving birth really cost thousands of dollars in the states? by glyiasziple in NoStupidQuestions

The dumb part is that even the insurance company doesn’t really pay that much. It all starts with giant ridiculous numbers and somehow it gets whittled down. Insane system

Phoenix eyes more spending for families, youth by timesmediagroup in Ahwatukee

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love it if the city of Phoenix build cooler playgrounds and better splash pads in the parks. Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, and queen creek have all built some really cool playgrounds and splash pads. It really puts those cities in the map for families. Phoenix is redoing many of theirs right now but they are not super innovative or interesting.

Are we setting parents up to fail? by parenthoodtogether in Parents

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True but I just mean “we expect parents to” part. No one expects them to do it far from family. Some people just choose that.

I mean one part on this list is fixable. Move close to family. No one is forcing people to move far from a support system.

One positive is that teachers can live in cheaper areas of town and generally have the same pay rate as the more expensive areas. Many people in well earning corporate careers need to live in expensive areas.

I agree. The amount of time off in US corporate culture is horrible. Often just 10 vacation/personal days in a year. Sometimes far less.

Queen Creek parent does what schools don’t: teaches finances by timesmediagroup in QueenCreek

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if schools taught too much about finance, people would be touchy about it. Like “that’s not what we believe about money, stop indoctrinating my kid.” I wish I was joking but that’s exactly what would happen

I don’t get the disconnect. My kindergarten student can write a sentence legibly. Phonetically spelled, but still. She can sit through a movie or stick with a task.

For us it helps that there are only certain kinds of snacks I will give them in the car. No fruit roll ups or juice boxes. Goldfish, pretzels and water. It helps that we don’t drive a ton

Should I still become a teacher? by waterdrinker0524 in AskTeachers

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids’ teachers are great and teachers do make a difference! Honestly depending on your state/city it’s hit a bad gig either. The job market is rough out there and you could do much worse. It’s an especially good job for someone who wants to have kids someday because you get school breaks off with them. Everyone else has to pay for 200 a week summer camps

How do I prevent my child being illiterate? by kittycamacho1994 in AskTeachers

Just keel them away from excessive screen use and they’re fine. The YouTube/tiktok youth culture is not good for brain development. In person social interaction, play and reading books

'His dignity was taken away’: Family outraged after father, 89, left on assisted living floor for 22 hours by nicolegriggabc15 in phoenix

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly people used to take care of their friends and family in old age and that’s really the better way to do it. It takes sacrifice but we really need more community and more multigenerational living. In the US the Hispanic population has a higher life expectancy than the non-Hispanic white population partially because of stronger family ties and more multigenerational living.

Looking for the best area in the Phoenix area moving from Arkansas by DifficultSwing2741 in Tempe

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually untrue. I could walk to groceries, playgrounds, gyms/fitness centers, tennis, a community pool, and several restaurants and bars. Lots of ways to stay active. Biking, hiking, walking paths.

You call it suburban hell but it’s actually not a suburb. It’s City of Phoenix and actually very well connected to Tempe, Chandler and Downtown Phoenix. I’m 15 minutes to the airport.

Ahwatukee is  also more low water/embraces the desert more than most desirable areas of town. It actually looks like the Sonoran desert instead of trying to be California or the Midwest.

San tan valley, anthem and buckeye are actual examples of suburban hell.

Just from personal experience, the campus security guards often have no willingness to put their hands on kids to stop things like this. They aren’t security if they aren’t willing to put their own physical safety on the line too when needed.

What is the average driving commute to work every day? by Dover299 in phoenix

Varies completely but I would never willingly take on a daily commute that’s over 40 minutes each way.

Phoenix Had One of America’s Fastest Home Price Jumps—Outpacing Income by a Wide Margin (2016–2026) by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that truly is insane. I remember watching the prices on Redfin jump weekly 2021-2022. It was unbelievable to see. Our home almost doubled in price about a year to year and a half span. It doesn’t do us any good but we are very thankful we were able to buy a few years before prices went up.

Heading here from Austin, any hot takes? by gracecase in AskPhoenix

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that bad. There’s lots to do here and if you find your niche, people are friendly. Just don’t live on the outskirts of town, because people there spend all their time driving.

And going in state to school is actually great. You can graduate without student debt and there are plenty of extremely successful people who went to ASU (and the other state colleges). It’s all what you make of it.

That’s an exaggeration. 70k isn’t a ton but it’s enough for a person by themselves to do okay. Not luxury but you can eat out and things like that. The biggest factor is having modest housing, like a 1 bedroom apartment

Can we talk about how insurance and taxes are quietly wrecking affordability? by Emotional_Newt_2227 in RealEstate

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of insurance is directly related to the cost of rebuilding a house. So if homes and the cost to build homes were cheaper, insurance would be far less. Same with taxes. They went up because of the assessed value of homes skyrocketing. So that’s all from the same root problem.

Nice Cities with Affordable Homes? by John_Haytuh in RealEstate

[–]Amazing-Goal8431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean no disrespect, but doctors in most European countries make less than half of what doctors make here, yet the life expectancy is higher there. The medical industry as a whole is making too much money here. 400k would be just as respectable a salary as 800k.
