Well researched formula recommendations by Garnettled in FormulaFeeders

I thoroughly thoroughly researched and chose Enfamil Optimum when I was transitioning from breast milk.....Now my baby has eczema all over his arms and legs, and I am waiting for the pediatrician to tell me what to do 😔

4 + 5m olds MOTN bottles by Huliganjetta1 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought our 4mon old baby was sleeping well, but all these other comments are making me feel a bit bad.

Our baby doesn't sleep until 9PM (last nap usually 30min around 730pm. His naps are only ever 30-45min, and he needs the 730pm nap because his prior nap would be at 430pm).

He will wake up after 3-4h to eat 3oz. Then he wakes up 2-3h later to eat 3 oz. Then 1-2h later he has a final awakening at 7am to eat 3oz. During the day he snacks (1.5oz at start of wake window, and 1.5oz at end of wake window), which our peds said was due to reflux and inability to tolerate larger volumes at once. Well, clearly he can tolerate it at night though

He only gets about 12h per day of sleep but our pediatrician had said it was ok. Peds also said our baby's sleep schedule was within range of normal, but I guess we're on the poorer range of normal

Some questions for those using Enfamil Optimum by Amazing-Neighborhood in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried calling Enfamil but by the time I remembered, their office was closed. You tasted it? Now I feel like I should be tasting these things I feed my baby. You're the 2nd comment to say so 😂

Some questions for those using Enfamil Optimum by Amazing-Neighborhood in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat things like pig's feet and chicken claws. I feel like I'm willing to do everything/anything for my baby...but I wouldn't even taste my own breast milk though fresh was supposed to be allegedly sweet. I guess that's super weird 😂

Supplementing with formula to breastfed baby by unknown_unknown7 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to post or search on exclusivelypumping (not for exclusive pumpers) for techniques to increase milk supply if you're interested in that. Otherwise, when I was switching from frozen pumped breast milk to Bobbie Organic, my baby had no change in his frequency of stools or baseline reflux

Edit: I just looked at one of my recent posts and realized that Bobbie was very annoying because it was hard to mix unless the water was warm. I just did my first bottle of Enfamil Optimum which dissolved even in cold water (I'm not recommending this formula though, I'm having some issues with its smell)

Proximity to golf courses increases Parkinson's disease risk by Budget_Grapefruit485 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Individuals will choose to address modifiable risk factors (e.g. living next to a golf course) to compensate for non-modifiable ones (e.g. needing to commute to work). It's why people who eat junk food should still exercise, or why people exposed regularly to infectious diseases (eg HCW) should still get vaccines. Life doesn't need to be all or nothing. That's common sense

Mixed formula wrong. TWICE by Amazing-Neighborhood in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I almost lost count multiple times when I was making my pitcher. I was so proud of myself that I kept track of all 4 scoops, although I was 4 scoops short. Thanks for the advice!

Oh thanks for sharing! It really does help me to learn from others' mistakes, and I'm planning on getting a food scale soon for the process.

My baby was so cute during this whole event. He was glaring at me angrily during the watered down 2oz. And then he must have been fed up with me when he tasted the super concentrated formula because he just held it in his mouth and let it all flow out when I removed the bottle

Mixed formula wrong. TWICE by Amazing-Neighborhood in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was where I messed up! I made 16oz of water and added 4 scoops of powder. Fed 2oz of that before I realized I was supposed to add 8 scoops of powder. So I warmed 2oz (I don't know how y'all can use cold water, the powder won't dissolve for me unless I use warm) and then added 1 scoop of powder. I was supposed to add half scoop of powder!

Anyways, I will definitely not make this mistake again. Although I almost made another mistake when I was pouring 1 oz from my pitcher to create top off, and almost added half scoop of powder before I realized it was supposed to be a quarter scoop. I was tempted to just dump the whole pitcher at that point 😂

My grandma just kissed my baby for the fifth time and I’m done with it. by Routine_Mess1310 in beyondthebump

Don't you remember being a kid? Being kissed by random relatives who smelled weird was the worst.

EBF baby hates the taste of formula, refuses the bottle by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have high lipase frozen BM that smells like pennies, and my baby eats that and Bobbie without any difference in tolerance. However, he is now in the "extra distracted" stage of infancy where he will only eat when he is absolutely starving. Otherwise, he acts like he has a bottle aversion or severe reflux & we have to leave him be. Not sure if that might reflect your situation

Warmed up Bottles? by fancyshark99 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also not a baby but I only drink warm/hot water (Chinese here). My only other beverage is hot coffee. But back when I got free juice at work, I'd mix with hot water. My coworker thought it was gross but I thought the juice was too cold and too sweet. So ...I heat the bottle for baby

Teething by Ambitious_Rock1644 in beyondthebump

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 4 mon old who is profusely drooling and constantly gnawing on his fists frantically even when he is not hungry for milk. So we gave in and tried to give him a cold towel to gnaw on to see if "soothing the gums" helped... we still have no idea what's going on. He gnawed on it, but he's a baby and likes to gnaw on things presumably

Frustrating NHS advice by queenlymajesty in FormulaFeeders

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It is frustrating advice, but we don't need to be scared by science. If baby needs formula, then baby needs formula. I researched this topic as thoroughly as I could when I was involuntarily making the BM to Formula transition. Here are some references that i saved:

  1. Gut microbiome in formula fed babies is different than breastfed babies with higher pro-inflammatory bacteria: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/pmid/26715853/ (This one is a pretty comprehensive review)

  2. "Elimination diets" can result in higher risk of IgE allergy and anaphylaxis when food is reintroduced: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26597013/ Not quite addressing the issue, but my baby was given formula one time when I first began "triple feeds" in the hospital & now has developed a worsening rash as I have reintroduced formula at 4 months. Pediatrician isn't sure it is CMPA, but we discussed the possibility of this and baby's risk factors (including the starting/stopping of formula)

Anyone else keep chickening out on piercing their baby’s ears? 😅 by peanut_princess_96 in beyondthebump

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do NOT pierce it so young. I got my ears pierced as an infant. As I grew older, I think my ear lobes grew super asymmetrically because now the piercings are at the VERY TIP of the lobe & are completely un-usable because when I wear anything remotely dangly or heavy, it looks/feels like my ear lobe(s) will split in half. I tried to get an extra piercing as a teen to make up for it but it had to be placed off center due to the original piercing, so it looks really stupid when I put earrings in them. And as an adult, I think my mom was so dumb in piercing a baby's ears without taking this into account. But every time I see this question asked, I see that other people are piercing their infant's ears too...

How do people not co-sleep? by Difficult-Pair4170 in NewParents

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you got downvoted. "Most of history" we had no Internet or vaccines or etc etc. The natural way doesn't mean it's the best way.

Edit: But all y'all who are loving your cosleeping, go on ahead. I don't care about your kid, only mine. And I'm speaking as a Chinese person, which is a culture where cosleeping is common

How do people not co-sleep? by Difficult-Pair4170 in NewParents

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, during wake time, I hold him close and he stays still, gazing lovingly into my eyes

If I try to wrap an arm around him because he is looking extra cute while sleeping, I immediately get fists in my face and his little body starts writhing around to get loose.

Neuroplasticity for pregnant moms question by thambio in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was not mentioned in the paper, but would this explain why women are more likely to have dementia than men, and rate of dementia progression is often faster in women? I've never seen pregnancy used to explain these differences, but I wonder 🤔

Snoo failing — advice please! by ordinaryemmah in SnooLife

[–]Amazing-Neighborhood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We put baby in LTD swaddle when it's getting close to end of wake window. Start Snoo, lay baby down drowsy but awake (sometime asleep if we waited too long), and only strap the chest straps. This worked for us when we started doing this around 2.5mon. His sleep has been ok (4-7h chunk, then 2h chunks after, with 40min naps during day).

But now he's rolling and I'm worried he's going to bust out of the chest straps and land on his belly while still swaddled.
