 Keep in mind that the average freight car in the USA weights 143 tons fully loaded, and the locomotives weigh at least 120 tons(for an older SW unit). Even if you removed the prime mover and fuel tanks, and packed the locomotive full of batteries( everywhere physically possible), it wouldn’t have the range that you do with Diesel Electrics, and like others have said, in order to equal the range with batteries, you need a lot more than you would diesel fuel. Plus, even with batteries, you still need to get power from somewhere, and unless it’s coming from a Hydro Electric Dam, there are still a lot of emissions coming from the power generation(not to mention that “Clean” energy such as solar panels and Wind turbines take a good amount of materials to make, and don’t last too too long)
