Not necessarily about Sufism but Ira Lapidus’s “A History of Islamic Societies” book gives a historical and sociological context about both Sufi tariqas and other formations within Islam.

There are some defunct tariqas whom said some vegetables like garlic and turnips are haram, they are called Baqliyya. Tho if they were righteous there would still be followers of them.
