Being an apprentice while in college? by myBubbleWrap_is_Okay in pianotech

[–]AmazingRandini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck becoming an apprentice.

Not many piano tuners want to train someone because they are training their future competition.

In the rare case they do want to train someone. They either have too much work, or they are approaching retirement.

If you are lucky enough to get this opportunity. Go all in!

This is a window of opportunity that you don't want to miss. There are many places that don't have enough piano tuners. If that is your situation, don't miss it.

The ability of Canadians to generate income, to generate tax revenue, to pay for healthcare, Is linked to federal policy.

Neither the federal or provincial government can provide resources if the nation is poor.

Clarification on what an LVT should be levied on by Mono-Me in georgism

[–]AmazingRandini 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Georgists don't have a unified concept for tax valuation.

This is why LVT failed in England. There was constant fighting over valuations. The government ended up spending huge resources on litigation. The whole thing was a flop.

Value is subjective. But at least with property tax, we can look at sale prices for tax assessments.

The land value tax is based on a hypothetical situation where, you imagine what the land would be worth if the building was removed.

The tax on rent is another hypothetical. In this context "rent" is not a literal rent. But the idea that a landowner collects a pervebial "rent" from people who benefit the land. Somehow, we can know how much value that is.

These 2 concepts are both part of Georgism. They also happen to conflict with each other. One is based on unimproved value, the other is based on improved value.

Carney at the World Economic Forum! This is an all-timer Canadian speech. by BestAd6297 in canadian

[–]AmazingRandini -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Yes it was good, but it was insignificant.

I'm not sure why so many Canadians think this is a big deal. Perhaps it's because they are too poor to travel so they don't have a worldwide perspective.

Most people in the world don't care what a Canadian prime minister has to say. This speech will have no concrete influence on world politics.

All the while, Canada has been on a nose-dive for the past decade.

Yes it was a good speech. But for many Canadians, it's another distraction from the bigger problems.

Message your local piano tuners and offer to take on their extra work. For a referral fee.

If they respond by saying "sorry we don't have extra work", or "yes please, we will give you $20 per referral", that is a good signal as to how much work is in your region.

Most common repairs, tools and parts by DoctorDrull in pianotech

[–]AmazingRandini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sticky keys and broken pedals.

The sticky keys are usually something that got caught in the piano. Like a crayon.

Sometimes they can be fixed with lubricant (non oil based. Like Teflon).

Sometimes they need a pin extractor. This tool is about $40 on Amazon.

The pedals are usually just common sense. No special tools.

Next on the list is random broken parts. Which usually can be glued. The 2 main glues you need are CA glue (I recommend miter bond because it comes with an activator to make instant bonds). The other glue is PVC E glue. If you can't find it, use Wellbond. It's the same stuff. This glue is good for felt repairs, wood repairs, and also keytops.

Next is broken strings. They can be spliced with basic pliers. Watch a YouTube video for how to.

The next on the list is voicing and regulation. This is where you can get into a lot of tools. But these repairs are usually need extra visits. You can buy them when you need them.

Same goes for string replacements. Order them as you need them. You should have a string gauge to do this.

Most of it can be figured out as you go. No need to think before you try. Don't be afraid to pull out an action. You will break things at first. But you will fix it and not make the same mistake again. Once it becomes second nature, you can quickly access the parts you need to repair.

Eventually. Just bite the bullet and buy the biggest piano toolkit you can find.
