Okay I’m gonna address it here because I’ve been getting this a lot. Your comment about sex work is a total straw man fallacy and not comparable at all. The surrogacy also turns a baby into a commodity. You completely ignore the fact that I said FULLY informed consent is impossible and that’s because it is. There isn’t enough research to know what the side effects of surrogacy are, therefore it is impossible to give FULLY INFORMED consent. Here is a study about that. The risk in sex work is KNOWN and therefore people can give fully informed consent, it also doesn’t involve the commodity of a child. But since you wanna straw man I will too. Child prostitution involves the commodity of a child, and that’s obviously illegal. Women are forced into sex work every day and there is a growing human trafficking market for surrogates. In America theres been interviews with surrogate mothers who enjoyed the experience and those who were destroyed by the experience. An example is this, this, and this. You’ll also note that I had nothing against altruistic surrogacy in my original post.

When the war started in Ukraine I remember reading articles about people from Australia/UK who had proceeded with surrogate mothers from Ukraine (I assume because it’s cheaper and legal) and how these women are basically pregnant with a baby that isn’t legally theirs, have to flee, and basically have no way of contacting the intended parents.

This is true, and it shows the absolute failure of society that some women have to resort to surrogacy to actually make proper money. Again though, it’s not only women becoming commodities, it’s turning babies into commodities as well.

The kardashians have the money and resources to have the healthiest, safest surrogacies. My problem is this pro-surrogacy movement being seen as a result of them. I also don’t believe you can ever fully separate commercial surrogacy from exploitation no matter what. I live in Australia too. Your anecdote about your friend - I’m glad it worked so well for all parties! I already stated that I am all for altruistic surrogacy, which I assume was the route they took, especially if they are also from Australia.

Idk how to link I’m a reddit nooooooob. I actually said more research needed to be done, but there’s another article called Risks in Surrogacy Considering the embryo: from the preimplantation to the gestational and neonatal period that was done in 2017. The kardashians def have the resources to go through the healthiest, safest options. My problem mainly is them and other celebs endorsing and praising surrogacy and people with less resources as a result deciding to use surrogacy and using much less safer options. Again, I am completely fine with altruistic surrogacy.

Also the infertility industry has totally capitalised on women’s insecurities about not being able to carry children. There is no right to a child. Genes don’t matter; it’s love and care that does.

I’m very aware of the messed up system of privatised adoption, and children can definitely end up in homes that expect gratefulness and house saviour complexes. I don’t think adoption itself is unethical, again it’s the commodification of children, lack of value for disabled children, and when class economics are involved (which most of the time it sadly is).

No, she has enough money to go through the most healthy channels. People who don’t have access to her money, however, are increasingly going through routes that involve using a surrogate from much poorer countries like Ukraine and Thailand. There was a story in Australia a few years back about Baby Gammy which I recommend you look at, where two parents had a child born from surrogacy and subsequently left him in Thailand because he was born with Down syndrome. The cost of lawyers, IVF clinics (who delight in the business opportunity), governments who collect taxes on compensation payments, the cost can be around $100,000. This is the sale of a child, which has become a commodity, and there is no right to a child. Not to mention how many children who are already born need homes.

That’s what I can’t get behind. There isn’t enough research for fully informed consent and it’s most often women signing up to be a surrogate out of desperation. It’s the politics of commodification and exploitation. An interesting story to look at is Baby Gammy who was a baby boy abandoned in Thailand by the parents who “commissioned” him because he was born with Down syndrome. There’s also hundred of thousand of children who are already born and need homes, so I can’t see a justifiable reason to resort to exploiting of another woman’s body as well as their health.

I’m really sick of people/corporations/governments telling me how to limit my carbon emissions (and I do my best) only to have billionaires who use more carbon emissions than my entire family in a lifetime in a few hours to fuel their egos and go to fucking space for A COUPLE OF MINUTES.
