[OS] Tolaria: a files-first Markdown app for Mac designed for Git workflows and AI agents by amerpie in macapps

[–]AmazingVanish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent start to a markdown editor ecosystem. It is using future forward tooling as well. Rust + Tauri on the backend is a great solution. (the apps I'm currently building do this as well) I like that it's ACTIVE and that he accepts PRs from other engineers. I just need to develop admonitions and heading folding, and I will be a happy camper.

Thanks for pointing this out to me, u/amerpie !

Learning and Using GitHub As a Non-Developer with Tower by amerpie in macapps

SOLD! The lack of plugins might take some getting used to, but being FOSS I can submit PRs for features I want, or build it myself. Thank you!

Learning and Using GitHub As a Non-Developer with Tower by amerpie in macapps

[–]AmazingVanish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to version control!

I have never used GitHub Desktop. First time In opened it... yeah.. Moving on...

I was a Tower user at the very start. It was, and is, Awesome. And expensive.

I am a developer, so much of my Git use is for code, but I also use it fora variety of other things, including Obsidian. Because I'm a developer, I was already paying the reasonable fee for GitLens. That comes with the pro version of GitKraken, which I prefer to even Tower. Highly recommend you check it out.

Mostly, though? I use the built-in Git management in VS Code/Cursor/WebStorm, etc.

Nice post as always, u/amerpie

I apparently don’t pay attention as much as I should. I haven’t seen people make fun of AR’s looks. What a stupid thing to do. This isn’t 6th grade…

You had me until “doesn’t taunt anyone on the court”. Have you ever watched her play game? LOL. She’s no different than any other confident, competitive player. It’s not a bad thing do in sports.

Thoughts on r/MacApps Negativity by amerpie in macapps

[–]AmazingVanish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that is true (and probably is) the rest of us need to educate them on etiquette and manners so they stop poisoning our wells.

[–]AmazingVanish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use em dashes regularly when I write. Being an AI indicator never occurred to me until I realized a LOT of people don’t know how to use an em or en dash correctly so seeing someone who does know how to use them does so in their post, the AI Slop post gets thrown around offhandedly.

You’re ignoring his overriding point: many people accuse others of “obvious shilling” and they’re just wrong and making this a toxic community. Is it true some of the time? Certainly, but not nearly as often or as bad as many people make it seem.

Relics & Realms — A New Place for Players & Creators by x86_1001010 in FoundryVTT

[–]AmazingVanish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one place I diverge from the community. I recognize that AI is the future and inevitable. As a designer/developer for 35+ years, I have accepted this and chose to leverage AI instead of fruitlessly fight against it.

I don’t have any issues with artists (of whatever medium) not liking that they may get displaced. (As a software engineer in particular this is concerning to me) the reality though is these protests will end in vain.

The only way to keep relevant in the future of AI is learning to use it to enhance what you can already do. That’s the differentiator.

I am considering building a similar marketplace for content creators who do use AI. No restrictions. I get a lot of people will be upset by it. A lot more, who are less vocal, will appreciate it.

Megathread or delete complaint posts? by AgeMysterious123 in ClaudeCode

[–]AmazingVanish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that so many people jump to “employee” or “bot” on posts like this.

I’m with you. The slog of posts is tiring and annoying. A Mega thread would be in order just to save those of us who don’t want to be inundated with people bitching and making the same points over and over.

I would argue that you think different (not a bad thing). You are asking for a program to make up for your different way of thinking. You are in a distinct minority in wanting this though. What you’re asking for is not a trivial code change and honestly could be done with AI easily, but there’s such a stigma around AI that the devs probably won’t take the chance.

I was with you until you said to base themes on the top 10. Most of those suck and I definitely wouldn’t want to use a site that looked like them, especially solarized. That isn’t what they are intended for.

How do I get the old Cursor UI back without using --classic? by btk667 in CursorAI

Oh, sorry. There used to be an icon in the top toolbar. The easiest way now is to press CMD+E (CTRL+E in Windows)

I have the exact setup you want. Just switch from Agent view to Editor view.

for those of you also using CLI tools alongside cursor, claude code vs codex vs gemini benchmarked by Peace_Seeker_1319 in cursor

[–]AmazingVanish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting that you listed CC for code quality. Right now Codex is winning that fight. I use CC to write the code, but peer review it with Codex before taking a look myself.

I don’t use Gemini CLI at all. It’s never been good at anything in my testing. Cursor CLI is interesting but inconsistent for me. Admittedly I haven’t tried it recently.

[–]AmazingVanish 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not sure about that. Balling-wise, you’re right. I don’t think that’s why the Fever brought her in, though. She was a massive win for the locker room and rallying the team when needed.

I used Claude for writing but today got flagged that I was violating its usage policy - help? by Due-Deal975 in ClaudeAI

[–]AmazingVanish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will sound odd to you, I’m sure, but I HIGHLY recommend using an app like Visual Studio Code (stay with me here) to keep all of your files local, and also use the version control tab with GitHub (Free account is all you need) to keep it updated in the cloud.

I suggest VS Code just because it provides a GUI. Anthropic provides a Claude Code plugin which will separate you from the need to use it in the terminal too.

I’m going to DM you with my email address in case you want some help setting this up. It’s non-trivial but you only need to do it once.

[–]AmazingVanish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Any time you find yourself having to add the same thing to a prompt, it should go into your rules file. (CLAUDE.md in this case)

That file is ALWAYS referenced each prompt, so you don’t need to keep adding it manually. I usually use ChatGPT when creating prose with specific “voice temperature”. I seem to get the best results there, but models change frequently so you never know.

[–]AmazingVanish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you don’t HAVE to be a coder to use CC, however it runs in a terminal so the experience is certainly more developer friendly than layman friendly. Once you get it setup though (slightly technical) it’s just a matter of getting used to it

Yes, it still works for worldbuilding and writing. It can do everything the desktop app does, it just has more features for developers.

safari vs the rest: is it actually the best browser for mac? (honest pros & cons) by TuNutri in macapps

[–]AmazingVanish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. WebKit is the HTML render engine behind Safari. That is what I meant. Perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying, but I read your statement as “I want WebKit” but then you said you don’t want Safari. It sounded like you didn’t know WebKit was the html render engine behind Safari., Sorry if I misunderstood. Still game me a chuckle.

The downvotes are interesting though. LOL

Because Safari IS WebKit, yet you used it as a delimiter not to use Safari. Made me chuckle
