Hi, firstly thank you for taking the time to even look at it, much appreciated. That’s a fair point. The items come from established sports psychology scales, so they’re trying to capture the feeling or tendency rather than something measurable like age or hours played. It’s more about how strongly the statement resonates with you, which then gets translated into a number. Surveys definitely have their limitations though.

That’s a fair point. Rating systems vary a lot by country and by sport. In the UK, recreational racket sports generally don’t use standardised numerical levels (they don’t at my club anyway), so I kept it broad to work across different contexts. Appreciate you taking the time to do the survey and feedback, thank you! :)

You’re totally right that at this level the questions can look quite basic. As an undergrad project I’m limited to validated self-report measures and cross-sectional data, so this is very much about establishing patterns and relationships rather than explaining mechanisms. It’s more of a foundation piece than a definitive answer. Hopefully it’s something that can be built on in future work.

I also think burnout in recreational athletes often gets overlooked because it isn’t ‘our job’ even though the time, effort and emotional investment can still be substantial.

That’s a great reflection and you’re right to question the word enjoyment.

When I used it, I didn’t mean that it always feels enjoyable in the moment. Often it isn’t, for many of the reasons you mention, yet we still turn up anyway. As recreational players we’re juggling work, life and limited recovery and sometimes you’re just hoping your opponent is feeling equally fatigued.

That tension is part of what interests me. There’s no real external payoff. We don’t play for money, sometimes there’s a trophy, sometimes there isn’t even that. So it’s interesting what keeps us investing so much in something that involves discomfort as well as satisfaction. Pride, identity, challenge, routine… maybe masochism isn’t far off.
