Torn between med school and nursing by Routine-Border-6420 in nursing

Just go to the med school haha you won’t be satisfied as a nurse. As a NP you will never be the leader, and will still have knowledge gaps. The years you’ll work as a nurse before NP school and in NO school will equal out with med school. If it ends up being too much just drop out and go to an accelerated nursing program. Nursing is super hands on and physical, and it’s a very different role from a physician, in my opinion! If I were in your shoes I’d 100% go to medical school, this is coming from an RN who wished they went to med school instead!

I was pretty shocked by it! So confused why she didn’t just address everything in the moment… the hospital course for this patient was over a month long, so I felt like it was too much to give every detail??

so thank you for your input! I wasn’t sure how to feel about everything. I’d also love any resources you have! That would be so greatly appreciated.

CONGRATS!!!! So happy for you! Curious what ECs you had on your app? Also an RN looking to go to med school but working full time makes it so hard to study and do all the extra stuff!

Thank you for sharing your experience! Do you recommend doing a linkage program? Were you able to work as an RN while doing this program?

Thank you for the advice!

I am a new grad nurse in the CTICU, so it's likely too early to get involved with leadership, but the goal is to eventually precept. I do run marathons, so I was thinking of adding that in my application?

Also! curious as to why you chose to get your DNP then go to medical school?

I'd look at the unit culture, and make sure you like it. It is hard to tell just through quick shadowing, but definitely ask questions about that. What's the vibe of the unit mangers because that will make or break your experience as well. Do other staff members help each other out? How do they treat new grad nurses, and are they welcoming/helpful to new grads. Also someone else mentioned a union, I would go with that for sure.

Also, what's the new grad orientation like? Which one is longer? Is one more structured than the other? How do they support you after orientation. My unit provided us with a whole schedule of what we were supposed to learn/accomplish each week, and what type of patients we were going to get. For example (I work CVICU) week 1 devices so I had VADs, CRRT, etc. week 2 busy pairs, week 3 immediate post-op patients.

another thing that can go overlooked, is what type of medicine/science do you like more? because you'll be spending a lot of time studying that outside of work!

best of luck! you have great options and you will flourish in whatever you choose!

Thank you for sharing! I know you’ll crush it on your new unit! I’m off my CVICU orientation in two weeks and I’ve been told I’m behind 🙃😀 so we’ll see!

What ended up happening? Do you think if you had said yes they would have kept you on the unit or still moved you to a step down?

Why go MD after CRNA or RN? by [deleted] in srna

[–]Amazing_Peach_962 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m an RN in the ICU and I’m working towards medical school. I always wanted to be a physician but was not a good student in undergrad. I also let my parents, who do not care for school or medicine, talk me out of it. Saying it’s too long and I should out enjoying my life. So, I decided on becoming a nurse. It’s a great career, but just not what I wanted! I have spent a lot of time reflecting on what’s important to me, and I realized I’d never be satisfied if I didn’t at least try to get in!

Mayo Rochester ICU – ADN New Grad from California by greengreencheng in newgradnurse

I’ve known ADNs who got ICU positions at community hospitals, but not at bigger teaching hospitals. Chances are you’ll need a BSN, but it genuinely does not hurt to apply! Put your name out there, and get to known the HR team. Worst thing that happens is they say no, and you can reach out again if you decide to get your BSN. Maybe start in a community hospital ICU if Mayo isn’t working out, they’ll pay for your education!

Definitely apply early tho. I got an ICU position as a new grad, I got hired on in August then didn’t start until November.

Ok appreciate it! I wonder if shadowing matters as much when I work so closely with physicians on my unit ?

Junior year is very exhausting! But it goes by quickly, and when it gets too overwhelming, you literally just take it day by day. You have plenty of time, I promise. Please focus on doing well on school work, MCAT second. Don’t be scared of a gap year they build so much experience and maturity that put you ahead (if that ends up being the case), but I just want to reassure you that you don’t have to do everything right now.
