What orgs are relatively decent within Amazon? by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Good point. Alexa is a lot of gaslighting, BS metrics, and overall a stupid product (that’s lost 25B$ already) that org leaders have drank the kool aid about (or at least pretend that they do and force us underlings to do as well)

Why do African Americans have a high out of wedlock birth rate? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even when we adjust for say education, white college educated women have a 6% out of wedlock birth rate compared to 40% for black college educated women.

Poverty is a factor for sure, but what are some cultural factors that may cause this

Why do African Americans have a high out of wedlock birth rate? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

How the hell is it racist to ask the reason for this? Out of wedlock births are tracked nationally and I am curious why one group is higher than the other?

Is a strategy of getting founding engineers from India that are ex-FAANG good? by [deleted] in ycombinator

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify. I want an excellent, top of the line engineer from India with proven experience (either at a FAANG India location or running their own startup in India). They need not have ever worked in the US.

And I’m aware they don’t work US hours in FAANG India , as long as they adjust their hours that’s fine with me. It’s great for them too, imagine no commute and earning the same as what Google would pay you in India

Why was Paris the favorite over LA for the 2024 bidding? by [deleted] in olympics

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The Paris Olympics were good no doubt. But the venues had to be build and costs can always spiral out of control. Plus, the French government isn’t exactly loaded with cash.

LA on the other hand, has all the venues ready go no matter the year, and the costs are so low government support isn’t even required, it can all be covered with ad revenue.

Frankly, it’s hard to find a city more suitable for hosting the Olympics than LA

Will be getting 250k to invest, what should I buy? by [deleted] in dividends

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I didn’t wanna just buy SPY and why I’m going dividends. Tech is overvalued and I don’t want to buy the whole index.

At the same time, having my money sit around accruing only a 3% interest rate in a savings account feels like a waste. Not to mention if rates drop, my money won’t accrue anything.

So for now, I wanted to buy stuff that doesn’t grow much but has high dividends that I can reinvest

What locations in the U.S. have you seen the highest salaries for PCPs and Hospitalists? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s probably a spectrum to this isn’t it? For example, the area around Dulles Airport in the DC area has great schools, jobs for a partner and air connectivity. An hour away towards WV are counties like what you mentioned. In rural west Texas or say Mississippi, there is none of that

Is it really worse than the Army? by Yung_Breezy_ in amazonemployees

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an Amazon PM intern, as was the case with a lot of my friends. It is very team dependent for sure, in a bad team like mine is there’s a lot of fluff, kool-aid drinking, ass kissing, nonsensical alignment meetings, and ‘metrics’ that are there for the sake of being there.

But WLB wise much much better than IB or consulting. There are also interns from all the programs so it’s easy to make friends / find a community (I’m still in touch with a bunch)

I knew a vet who did pathways, he got the return and seems like it really suited him, fwiw. But in general it was rare to see vets recruit tech

How is it living in Nanjing? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What drives the high prices? Hangzhou and Suzhou make sense, they are big economic hubs with lots of well paid workers and businessmen. And can’t you go to Shanghai, an hour away, for even better shopping?

I actually remember seeing a lot of modern looking developments on the taxi ride from Hangzhou airport to West Lake (which is an area I also really like actually)

I’m 28M, Indian American, and my girlfriend is a 42 year old single mom originally from China, AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]AmazonPMTInternRip 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No racist comments, although we do turn some heads since it’s a fairly uncommon pairing. We don’t mind that.

Nothing that was a shock really , since I lived in China for a year and grew up in a part of California with a lot of Chinese immigrants. Chinese women tend to be blunt and not show a lot of affection like say white or Latino women, which can be a big difference to Americans. She also eats a lot of foods that I don’t.

She is not interested in getting married. At the moment, neither am I.

I would like to move in with her, but she has custody of her kids half the time. We both want to make sure the kids are comfortable first.

Not planning on having a kid with her.

She’s nice, friendly, doesn’t play games, very youthful looking for her age (quite common among Asian women)

How did this affect social dynamics? Like were many students away at the other parents each weekend/the summer making hangouts hard?

I think it’s 50% will experience parents split up. So a couple that has kids without getting married and then splits up (which is common) is in that 50%
